Debian Installation :: Get Apt To See DVDs 2 And 3?
Jun 9, 2015
I did a minimal install of Debian 8. When I 'apt-get install' some packages, like xen, it'll look on DVD 1 and then say not found. How do I get it to look on other disks too?
ETA: I have to install from disk, there is no Internet access for this host.

I'm looking at [URL] and I see 8 DVD's each approx 4GB. Why is there one DVD for ubuntu and 8 DVDs for debian? What is on all those DVDs? Is there any way to copy those iso files to a thumb drive instead of a DVD and install from the thumb drive? I have a couple of 32GB micro SD in the mail soon.

Do I need to burn all 8 DVDs to install Debian? Is there a simple way that I can just burn a small bootable CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive, and add upon everything else I need afterwards by Internet?

I have not been able to write to DVDs since the install except for once when luck seemed to play more a part than anything else. Does anyone have a fix for this?Well, after letting it sit and sit and sit, it looks like it does write the data. But, it's writing about 1/2 of a DVD for just 2 500K files.

At the Debian download web page, there are many choices for an installation CD. There also is a 4 DVD set. I presume the CD is to get a base system installed. I presume the 4 DVD set is the whole ball of wax.
Yet presumptions are not always a good thing. So I would appreciate an explanation about the difference between the two options or just point my nose to the appropriate link. I browsed the Debian online docs, but I did not find an explanation. I am getting older too, so perhaps I saw the explanation and clicked right on by.

Can I use all packages in Debian 5 Lenny DVDs (1-6) without any problem in my Ubuntu Server 10.04? For example using apt-cdrom and apt-update, apt-install xxxx ?. Wouldn't affect these actions for potential errors?

I am trying to make a backup copy of a DVD without success. k3b simply stays there silent doing nothing and I have to terminate the application. Is there a way to make DVD copies if one needs to?EDIT:I am using the home partition for caching as it is the biggest one on the disks; /tmp is too small.

Handbrake defaults to .mp4 but can also rip to .mkv. I'm not sure which to use. I like to rip CDs to .flac if that gives you any idea of what I'm trying to achieve.

I have Debian Jessie installed. When I insert a non-encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, a pop-up menu appears asking me what I want to do (e.g. "Open with vlc media player, etc.).
When I insert an encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, no pop-up menu appears.
I am able to play the encrypted movie DVD in vlc, and libdvdcss2 is installed. So my question is not about playing the DVD but rather about the failure to automatically detect it.
This behaviour happens in Gnome, Mate, and XFCE. (KDE has a Plasma Device Notifier Widget that is able to detect the encrypted DVD).
My other computer with Debian Wheezy is able to automatically recognize the encrypted DVD.
Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after the insertion of the encrypted DVD:

Whan I run the mount command after inserting the non-encrypted DVD the following line appears in the output:
Code: Select all/dev/sr0 on /media/daniel/Check Please type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=77,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)
Granted, this issue is not a major problem as I can start vlc and play the DVD. However, it might be useful to some new users to Linux to have the pop-up menu appear. Additionally, it would be interesting to learn why it works in Debian Wheezy and not in Debian Jessie.

I have the eight Debian dvds listed in my sources.list, along with security, nonfree, and multimedia repositories. It does this for all eight dvds, re-scanning them for the update. These dvds have already been scanned (from the apt-cdrom add command). New updates are NOT going to suddenly appear on these already scanned dvds, so this is a completely unnecessary endeavour. Is there a way to stop this?It didn't happen with Lenny, and I'd like to stop it with Squeeze.

I use Squeeze. I just recently upgraded from Lenny. My sources.list is a combination of Debian DVDs and some http repos (for multimedia, non-free, and security updates). I rely largely on DVDs because I use dial-up.
When I tried to run apt-get dist-upgrade for the multimedia packages on my system, it told me to insert Debian DVD disc #1, and from that attempted to install the following programs: librtmp0 libdirac-decoder0 libggiwmh0 libggiwmh0-target-x libvdpau1 twolame. But, it then told me:

I have one desktop and two laptops. It is strange to find that none of the three systems play VCD, when I use Totem, Totem-xine, Gxine or VLC media player, even with the codecs updated. Worse, each of the three DVD players then act in a loop, seeking the LG DVD-RAM drive endlessly. But the drives otherwise work very well and I also write DVDs and CDs often.I have tested the VCDs in Windows machines with VLC media player, and the VCDs work wonderfully. This is kind of strange. So I thought may be I should report this.

I've been a SuSE user since 6.3 days. I just built 2 more old PCs to learn DRBD, and they only have CD drives (not DVDs). To my chagrin I just found out that there are no 11.3 install CDs? These old computers can't boot from USB either so I can't stick the DVD on a USB drive. Or am I just missing the installation CDs somewhere? I did some searching on the download site and in these forums but came up empty.

I downloaded 64-bit fedora12 iso DVD image and created a DVD. When I tried to boot, the CD does not boot. I checked the documentation to see whether book.iso or any other file needs to be copied along with. My question is:
- What are the files I need to copy to a DVD for the DVD to boot up straight up from the DVD...?
- If not, is there another way to get this fresh installation done.
I have 32-bit Fedora 11 installed in a machine, but need 64-Fedora to do some testing, before going with RH Linux.

I'm trying to install fedora 10 via dvd without a lot of success. i'm doing this on an old hp 8765c computer. it has a sansung sd-612 dvd-rom player. the dvd's i burned would not boot. so, i checked the dvd. sha1sum. check verify dvd when burned. check boot on system where the dvd burned. check dvd verify when bootedc check ok, lets check the dvd player. From i can see on the web, this player had issues about not playing dvds. some relate to driver issue when upgrading me to xp. and, some refer to updating firmware. lots of post about the dvd player not playing dvds. None with a succinct solution.
Well, if anyone has a solution for updating the firmware for a samsung sd-623 dvd player, it would be helpful. For now, installing from the internal dvd player isn't going to work for hardware reasons. Plan B lets try installing from the dvd using a network attached dvd server. sing the net install cd. use linux askmethod, use url to point to the dvd. the image in retreived, select all the defautl options, format the drive, does the package selection, does the package dependencies, but errors on the retriving packages. puts up the download retry message. then show message about not being able to retreive the authcong-gkt... rpm. just let the net install go. i get to the nic configuration, it errors out. probably network manager issue about trying to set a static ip address.........

How to Transfer 4 versions of Vista and Windows-7 installation DVDs into a flash drive The recent versions of MS Windows of Vista and Windows 7 installers support booting from a USB device so it is possible to transfer the contents of the installation DVD to a flash drive and use it for booting. A USB flash drive however is classified by M$ as a Super floppy that can only have one partition. This means one flash drive can store one MS Windows boot loader.
This tutorial shows how to use Grub, a Linux boot loader, to boot 4 Vista/Windows 7 installation in one flash drive. Technical consideration
(1) I have checked to my satisfaction that none of the MS Windows of Win2k, Xp, Vista and Win7 can mount or see more than one partition in a flash drive. That doesn't mean the user can't have multiple partitions. It is just MS systems have been engineered to mount the first one it recognises and disregards the rest.
(2) MS Windows installers of Vista and Win7 do not like to be booted from a logical partition. As a flash drive with a Msdos partition table can have a maximum 4 primary partitions hence this tutorial describes 4 versions of MS Windows installers of Vista Home-32, Win7 Ultimate-32, Vista Home-64 and Win7 professional-64

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!
