Fedora Hardware :: No Activity Or Log Entries When USB-3 Drive Connected

Nov 11, 2010

Running from F-14-i686-LIVE CD to test before I install. I have a Transcend 640GB USB-3 external drive connected through a Transcend pci/express adapter, chipset NEC D720200.
lspci yields: USB Controller: NEC Corp uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller Rev 03.
I see no activity nor any log entries in /var/log/messages when I plug in the USB-3 drive. If I plug the same drive into a USB-2 port on the mainboard, all works as expected.

Fedora :: Gps - No Drive Is Connected

Aug 8, 2010

I just bought a Magellan Triton 400 and installed just about every program with "gps" in the name. When I plug it in and choose "Connect to PC" it stops at the "Waiting to connect" screen. The installed gps programs each reports that no drive is connected. This is my first experience with gps and I'm really perplexed. There are guides to setting up gps with bluetooth, but this is a USB connection.

Fedora Installation :: Flash Drive Connected - Unable To Start Up Computer

I then put the computer into suspend or hibernate or whatever and now it won't start up. At all. And I'm stuck as 'everything' I need is on that computer.

Ubuntu :: Prioritizing Hard Drive Activity?

Feb 12, 2011

Whenever I'm copying something big, or installing a large update, or doing something else that takes a lot from the hard drive, my entire system slows down. Now, I realize that this is inevitable due to limited resources, but the heavy hard drive work is usually low-priority, background stuff.

Is it possible to assign hard drive activity a low priority value, similar to renicing processes on the CPU?

Hardware :: External Hard Drive Failure / Not Displaying "booting GRUB" Or Any Other Signs Of Activity?

Jan 6, 2010

I accidentally deleted the linux mint 8 that was on there due to a small issue discussed on another thread(long story followed by a stupid mistake). after then i reinstalled linux using the .iso i found on the website. all is well. I boot up linux on the external and it runs great. then i turn off the laptop and try to plug it into another laptop( which i used the external hard drive on before and worked) and it went through the bios screen but then after slight lag(5 seconds longer then usual) the blinking cursor in the top left corner would not display anything, anything meaning "booting GRUB" or any other signs of activity. after waiting some time i quit and tried it back on the other laptop, which it was just working on, only to get the same result. I am confused about why it would work the first go around but nothing past that.

The only thing i altered on the external after i installed linux was that i put my home directory into it( from another version of linux mint)

Debian :: LXDE - Cannot Mount Drive When Connected Via Usb

Apr 6, 2010

I just discovered how much Debian when paired with LXDE sucks! I thought it was a good match, low resource DE with Debian, supposed to be stable and secure, right? Debian Squeeze and LXDE is one big BUG! What garbage! Too many damn bugs.

I installed Synaptic Package Manager but it went into three places in the menu but only one of them works. So, how do I know which one to choose? Really crazy. Also, I cannot mount my drive when connected via usb. But, my laptop only has usb ports and no eSATA. I now have to look for a new OS and DE because this one is a disaster.

General :: Mounting A Drive That Isn't Yet Connected On The Network

Jul 16, 2011

I have an external Samba network storage drive that I mount using 'mount -t cifs -o username=aaa, password=aaa //myserver /mnt/mountlocation', but I'm finding it to be a pain to enter that whole command every time I turn on that drive and connect it to my computer via the network. I could put that command in a script and run a simple script like 'mntdrive' that would run that command for me, but is there a way to have the drive 'pre-mounted' so that if it's available on the network it's mounted?

If I put the mount command in one of the startup scripts or in fstab, would it be available at the mount location when the drive is connected if it wasn't connected when the computer was first turned on? Or is mounting the drive manually, even if by running a script that does it for me, something I'll have to do every time I turn on that drive? Any creative ways around this? Would make things easier if it is possible.

Ubuntu :: Boot Fails With Second SATA Drive Connected / Fix It?

Feb 23, 2011

Having an issue I've been unable to resolve for for a week now. I've 2 drives, SATA1 for OS and operating files, SATA2 for media storage. came home last week to an update manager window present and error in Transmission stating unable to second drive due to "Read Only" status. the drive was never set to read only status but following the update manager a reboot was needed. once rebooted, the GRUB menu came up (dual boot system), selected Ubuntu then booting stopped. blank black screen with blinking cursor. rebooted several times, checked bios recognition of both drives, replaced cables, switched power to drive to separate cables, used different SATA ports but nothing worked. finally removed the second media storage drive and Ubuntu booted normally. now any time i connect the second drive and reboot it fails to boot into ubuntu or XP. i removed the media drive and installed it in another computer and it worked normally. have searched everything i can but no answers have been found so far. wondering if anyone here has had similar trouble or has idea for what to try.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit with current 3.6.32-28 kernel

Fedora :: 30 Seconds Of No Activity During Boot Sequence

Nov 22, 2009

I have been enjoying Fedora 11 for sometime, and decided to try Fedora 12. All in all it is working, but the boot sequence seemed much slower. I decided to use bootchart to examine the boot process on my old F11 and new F12 installations. The result show F11 booting in ~34 seconds, and F12 booting in ~57 seconds. Interestingly, the first 30 seconds show that only kthreadd, khelper, and ata/0 are running. CPU and disk utilization are both zero during this 30 seconds span, then all of a sudden everything starts loading, CPU and Disk utilization spike up, and ~23 seconds later I get to the login screen. I sent an email to Harald Hoyer about this, and to my surprise he was kind enough to respond. He suggested I check the BIOS to make sure I had disabled the floppy drive, which I did. The problem persists, so I was wondering if anyone here was having a similar issue and if so how they have dealt with it. I have blacklisted the floppy module (just to make sure)

General :: Installing Debian On External (connected Through USB) Hard Drive?

Apr 23, 2011

I've got Vista installed on my notebook and I've bought an external drive (1,5 TB, but its size shouldn't matter in this case) and after formatting it I left 10 gigs for future purpose. Now, I decided to install 64bit debian on the unallocated 10 gigs. And so I did. To be precise: I have SATA drive inside my lap and hard drive (it's also SATA inside the cover) connected to my lap through USB. Boot sequence was 1)CD/DVD 2)hard drive 3)removable drive. During the installation the installer detected my internal drive as /dev/sda and my external drive as /dev/sdb. I decided to install grub on /dev/sdb (it was logical to me, since I didn't want to mess up my regular drive's MBR). Installer created 5 partitions on my USB drive. After booting from my external drive (look below*) I've got a message saying

Code:

error: no such partition Entering rescue mode... and after that I was in grub rescue console. When I typed ls I've got an output

Code:

(hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos5) (hd1,msdos2) (hd1,msdos1)

When I tried to type

Code:

ls (hd0)/

I only got a message

Code:

error: unknown filesystem This occured for all the listed devices... On my internal drive there were (during the installation and running the live cd) 3 partitions detected (vista os, data, rescue disk) so I don't understand the output that ls in rescue console gave me. about booting from external drive: I did that after pressing ESC - I've got a prompt to choose which device I want to boot from - this wasn't working properly; after changing the boot sequence the grub started but with the abovementioned error message...

If there's any info about exact names/types/devices of my installed partitions needed I will run live CD and check it. If any other info is required I will provide it (I tried to describe the problem in the most precise way ) What I was thinking about: maybe there is a problem with ordering of the devices - when I boot from DVD my removable disk is treated as the "second one" and after booting from the removable disk it becames the "first one" or something like that? If any of you have any good info on how mapping of the device names works it would be appreciated, since I couldn't find anything useful or I just don't know what to ask google about.

1) How to install Debian on a removable disk (I had no problems with installing Linux on pendrive but I did that from VirtualBox and it was some time ago) OR how to install GRUB on a removable disk? (unfortunately, I cannot install 64bit system through VirtualBox)

2) What's the logic behind naming devices under /dev? How come the devices in grub have their names mapped as hdx etc and I've read that hdx are the names for IDE/ATA drives and sdx is the proper name for a SATA or USB device

Fedora Installation :: No Harddisk Or Network Activity No Booting

Nov 19, 2009

I have an acer aspire L-5100 with Vista and fedora dual boot configuration. Fedora 11 worked fine. After upgrading with preupgrade The system shows a strange behaviour. The startup screen ( with no the little f in the first ) is first blue with the white place in the middle , the filling with the fedora f very slow ( 5 minutes ) and then nothing. No harddisk or network activity no booting. <ctrl><alt><delete> works for rebooting. <altfx> for console not. Hacking <alt f2><esc> very often and fast leads sometimes to a console where then the boot process starts running and the system comes up with gnome.

Fedora Hardware :: Mouse Jumps On Network Activity / What To Do?

May 21, 2010

I'm after fresh install of Fedora x64, did all updates. I have wireless pci card TP-LINK TL-wn510G (Atheros chipset) which was detected correctly.

Everything is working smoothly until I start to download from internet in firefox (or in konqueror - no difference). On increased network activity my mouse cursor starts to lag/jump when moving - it's almost impossible to do anything using mouse when there is file download. On minor traffic, like browsing webpages, I don't notice such behaviour.
I checked if its rather because of hdd activity not the network, but no - when copying big file on hdd everything works fine.
I'm also experiencing huge ssh lag/jitter despite the ping is low.
I fired top when downloading, but there is no process eating cpu in suspicious way.
I have a regular usb mouse.
On the same computer I have installed Win 7 and OpenSuse and nothing like this happens on that systems.

I think there might be a some kind of conflict between wifi card and usb mouse (they share resources) but don't know how to check/repair. Could you please tell me how should I proceed to check what is going on. I haven't modified any hw settings, the installation went w/o any errors.

Fedora Networking :: Blinking Wifi Light During Network Activity F15 / Fix It?

Jul 1, 2011

I had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week.
I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related.
I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want.
I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?
