I have a USB drive connected to my Ubuntu laptop. I tried to create a share but cant access it from other Win PCs. I'm getting access denied even though I'm entering my ubuntu username and password. I'm guessing this has something to do with my drive being NTFS
View 1 RepliesI am using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. I set up my main user- admin and loaded the folders of files I would be working on and the relevant additional programs. Now, I would like to set up a second user so that someone else can use the computer with access to many of my files and folders, but not all, which would defeat having a second user. I have set sharing preferences for all of my folders. I have giving most rights to my second user. Yet the second user cannot even see ANY of my folders when they sign-in.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI attempted to share my ~/Videos folder using the Folder Sharing dialog when right-clicking a folder in Nautilus. It started to install but failed partially spitting out some error that I didn't bother to read/write down. It asked me to restart which I did. But now when reattempting to share the folder, I get given the following message: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot create tmp file /var/lib/samba/usershares/:tmp0BRWpm
I've looked around for a thread for this particular error, but I can't find anything specific to the "cannot create tmp file" issue. I'm assuming it's some folder permission issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling samba from the Ubuntu Software Center.
Current situation: two drives, Ubuntu 10.4 64bit installed and running on one drive, other drive blank and formatted for NTFS. What I want: When I download of save anything I want it to be stored automatically on the NTFS drive with no encryption and have the 'Places' folders point to the corresponding folders on that drive. Why: simple, I'm planing to dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7, and the NTFS folder will be the 'My Documents' Drive, this is why it's formatted NTFS. There will be over 100GB on files I'll need both OS's to have access too and I would like it to be automatic to save duplication. Also, if I need to, I want to be able to take that documents drive from the Ubuntu PC and be able to recover the info with an inferior windows OS... because that's what I have lying round in an emergency.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup vpn to access folders and files from my school. VPN is connected now through networkmanager, but I don't know how to actually gain access to the folders on the school server.
Is it through nautilus? Or the "Connect to Server"? The school provides addresses that begins with \.. something, and I have tried typing it in to nautilus and the "Connect to Server" but it fails to connect.
I have googled this but all I find is how to connect to vpn manually or through networkmanager, and not how I then can access the folders on the server.
I did search, but could not find a solution.Right I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an old machine, installed fine and the system is running. I have a windows 7 desktop that is connected to the internet via wireless. The desktop then has an ethernet connection which is shared to the ubuntu server. The network looks like this.
Modem > Router > Desktop > Switch > Ubuntu Server My problem here is that there appears to be no connection from the server to the desktop. The server cannot connect to the internet.
When i ifconfig the ubuntu machine shows.eth0 link encap:Ethernetinet address: 192.168.137.2 Bcast:192.168.137.255 Mask 255.255.255.0 However on the windows desktop (the machine sharing the internet) these are the details for the connection to ubuntu server.ip 169.254.170.50 mask 255.255.255.0
is this a dhcp problem? is my server configured wrong?
I can access the folders that I have created in XP. What I would like to know is whether or not it is possible to share or link folders between the two OS. For example, I try to keep my files organized as best I can and had been keeping pictures in my XP "My Pictures" folder, but have to do a bit of directory digging to get to that same folder from Ubuntu.

As you can (maybe) see, my entire /home folder is shared. For various reasons, I'd prefer it if only say my music and videos were shared, how do I do that? I've looked around the web and seen some other people's samba.conf files but mine looks totally different and I don't want to lose the functionality I have by messing around with it.
Win7 x64 host with Virtualbox installed running Ubuntu 32bit guest OS. I have Samba installed and I am sharing a folder to have read access from Win7. The folders I tried to share (here 'folder1-3') have been added in the conf.d in etc/samba/ like this - I used these 3 variants, all showed the same problem:

While I can connect to all of these from Windows and map them in Windows Explorer, I am unable to serve those files using my FTP server that is running on Windows. The folders simply do not show up when I add them as folders to serve in FileZilla. The problem I am assuming is causing this is the fact that FileZilla is running as a different instance and not on an administrator level. I cannot however add any users to the permissions list on the Windows side. The 'security' tab of the mapped folder shows the following Users:
EVERYONE
root (Unix user
oot)
root (Unix group
oot)
None of these seem to have rights to 'read' or 'list folders', the only permissions listed are 'special permissions'. Does anyone know how I can assign the group EVERYONE privileges to read and list files and then be able to serve this shared folder through my Windows-run FTP server?
I want the best way to share my folders between my Ubuntu computer and other windows computers through the local network.

On my desktop PC (ubuntu 10.10) I can see the home folder of the mediacenter, but I cannot open it (unable to mount windows share) Where's the mistake?
I created a shared folder in my network, and then unshared it but it still shows up on Guest computers and people can still access it.How can I stop the share? "Sharing options" is completely greyed out.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I installed Samba and went Administration > Samba. Added a folder [Videos] to share (this folder is on an ext partition). I then went to the folder [Videos] Right+Click > Sharing Options. I selected 'Share this folder', I put in a name and comment, checked Allow others to create and delete files in this folder and checked Guest Access.
When I view this shared folder [Videos] from my Windows PC I can access it with no problems but when I try drill down into sub folders I get a permissions error. [Attached a screenshot of the error]. If I share each folder separately then I can access them but obviously I'd like to share a folder and all it's contents.
How do I get it to play movies? It needs all kinds of codecs apparently. Is there a good source for these?I'm running Ubuntu on another machine. How do I connect to THAT?I was able to use samba in Ubuntu to connect to my windows network. - OpenSUSE (Workstation configured to log in using Active Directory Information)
- First Windows Server (Domain Controller)
- Second Windows Server (Provide shared folders for users to use)
How do I map domain users from second Windows Server (like \windowsserverusers<user>) to a folder (like /home/<domain>/<user>/<user_personal_folder>) in OpenSUSE computer ? It should be via samba right? Trying checking something in /etc/samba/smb.conf but couldn't find anything.
Heres the set up I have: one eeepc running ubuntu netbook. with a usb wifi dongle, this is connected to a parabolic antenna i made out of pizza boxes and tin foil. One fujitsu laptop running ubuntu 10.10. the eee connects to the internet via the dongle. then the laptop connects to the eee. I set this up by using network manager. I created a new wirless connection and called it "UbuntuAdhoc". The on-board card connected to this without issue and the laptop was able to connect to the new wireless broadcast by the eees on-board card.
This worked perfectly untill I rebooted the eee. Now the eee is unable to conect to the internet if the on-board caard is conected to "ubuntuadhoc". also the dongle now wants to conect to "ubuntuadhock" too.
I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.
I want to share a media drive between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. This drive will hold all of my pictures so that I can edit them in Windows with Photoshop. What is my best bet?
A) Format the drive as NTFS. Are there any problems that I should be aware of with NTFS in Ubuntu?
B) Format the drive as ext2, use Ext2Fsd to use it in windows? Will this be seamless?
C) Use ext3 + Ext2Fsd. I know that there might be problems with ext4, but does ext3 work seamlessly in windows 7?
I just bought a Magellan Triton 400 and installed just about every program with "gps" in the name. When I plug it in and choose "Connect to PC" it stops at the "Waiting to connect" screen. The installed gps programs each reports that no drive is connected. This is my first experience with gps and I'm really perplexed. There are guides to setting up gps with bluetooth, but this is a USB connection.
View 11 Replies View RelatedHowever, since installing Lucid I've spent loads of time trying to re-establish the share I had under Karmic whereby my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM was automatically available to my LAN (simple router) connected Win7 PC. After a couple of days effort I've got to the point where I can access the CD or DVD mounted in Ubuntu, from Win7 but I cannot access the files within the CD or DVD (Err Mssg: You Do Not Have Permission To Access......).
I have noticed that the mount point seems to be the name of the disk under Lucid whereas under Karmic it was fixed as something like cdrom1. So if I edit smb.conf I can't specify the mount point as it depends on the disk name. Though to be honest I have no idea if this is anything to do with the problem! To save what little hair I have left I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to have my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM available on my Win7 PC for read & write.
I have a problem with sharing files from external harddrive. If I create a share from my ubuntu home folder, I can access to it from my Windows 7 laptop. I also see shares created from external drive, but windows says I dont have permission to access in there.

I've 2 drives, SATA1 for OS and operating files, SATA2 for media storage. came home last week to an update manager window present and error in Transmission stating unable to second drive due to "Read Only" status. the drive was never set to read only status but following the update manager a reboot was needed. once rebooted, the GRUB menu came up (dual boot system), selected Ubuntu then booting stopped. blank black screen with blinking cursor. rebooted several times, checked bios recognition of both drives, replaced cables, switched power to drive to separate cables, used different SATA ports but nothing worked. finally removed the second media storage drive and Ubuntu booted normally. now any time i connect the second drive and reboot it fails to boot into ubuntu or XP. i removed the media drive and installed it in another computer and it worked normally. have searched everything i can but no answers have been found so far. wondering if anyone here has had similar trouble or has idea for what to try.

Hard drive is connected to my Inspiron 1525 via USB, plugged in and I'm not seeing the new drive mounted. Restart doesn't fix things and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 doesn't work either. The drive I got is preformatted as NTFS and I've been using a logical partition formatted as NTFS as a sort of share drive between my Windows partition and Ubuntu partition, so I know I have NTFS set up properly. This is the hard drive I'm working with for reference.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a sort of usb connected device(not an external enclosure) so i can connect a sata hard drive into a machine that only has ide connections but the drive is not mounting. I am not very good at mounting slave hard drives anyway ,,,,never been able to get one happening without help. I am wanting to read this drive as i killed another desktop machine(i think the mb) and i need the data off the hard drive. The drive is shown in a directory and in the media directory. Can't think of what else sorry as i am so tired from testing everything out of the machine that i killed.....

Both systems will boot up fine its just that for some reason it won't boot to the internal drive (with vista) unless the external is connected. I just put the HD in another laptop only to have the same problem.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI finally have my ubuntu up and running. I have a USB-drive which is often connected to my Ubuntu-machine. I want to share this via Samba but I can't set the user-rights. If I try to acces the file (via windows machine) I can see the directory but if I open it it gives me: \Computermediadirectory is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. I tried setting the rights but it just 'changes back immediately'. I found some posts about not being able to set rights via ubuntu on a ntfs disk. If I mount it via fstab it will give an error when the USB-drive is not connected. So that's no option. Is there a way to share this drive via my Samba server? I did get access to a partition on my linux-machine, to I assume my samba-settings are correct.

My wife has a laptop that runs Vista, and when i use my Vista she can see my files and I share this hard drive with her, but when i run Ubuntu she cant see this drive, i have extrernal hard drive as my backup with lot of different files on it and she can pull files from it but when i use Ubuntu she can see on her Vista Network, how can i make so when i use Ubuntu she can see my drive? On my Windows i set up sharing of files but how do the same with Ubuntu.
