Fedora Hardware :: LaCie 2TB External USB Disk Does Not Work
Aug 17, 2010
When my LaCie BigDisk E+ USB/eSATA FW:1.1548 is plugged into the USB port, I get the following what is below (it fails). This occurs in Ubuntu also. I think it has something to do with the new kernels. I believe ehci_hcd used to be a module. Since it has been compiled into the kernel, the external USB hard disk does not work. I am compiling my own kernel now to see if that is the problem.
dmesg | tail
scsi11 : usb-storage 1-1:1.0
usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 14
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15

I recently bought a new PC to replace an old failing iMac i was running Linux on the iMac so decided to buy a refurbished PC to install Linux. I'm currently running mint 8 for the record.. I don't know if it's too relevant to my question...
anyway
I was using this Lacie 750gb HD to backup files in Mac OS X, there is a 30gb FAT partition and the rest is HFS+.I recently read that using " hfsplus " from the depositories you can mount HFS+ rw, but ONLY if it is journaled. (how can check this?)
I imagine another option would be to back the disk up and repartition it as FAT and Ext4 or is that possible? what is the best way to do that?
If anyone has time to share any experiences or knowledge on this subject I would appreciate it a lot, I'm having a hard time finding much info about it.I will have to backup the data on this drive first, so I don' t wanna make any hasty choices.

I have read other posts regarding the installations of different distros on external hard disk, but these did not help..
I want to install fedora 12 on a new external hard disk, so that i can boot from it on any system that supports booting from usb hard disk, and do all my work from the extenal hard disk itself. I want to know the exact procedure to install fedora on extenal hdd, and what do i need to do, so that the grub, (which i will install on the /boot partition of external hdd), get detected by the primary boot loader of mbr..
Or, I just need to boot from external hard disk.. please any one try to make it possible.

I have ubuntu 9.10 installed with 2.6.31-21-generic kernel and have recently bought a LaCie d2 network NAS to which I am connecting via a Conceptronic C54BRS4A router, but am having problems with connecting to the share drives.
The d2 software is version 1.0.8 and I have configured a share drive <4music>, and a user <myuser> assigned to a workgroup <workgroup> and with readwrite permissions for that drive.
The version of LaCie Network Assistant (LNA) for Linux available for download here url is just 1.1.0, but the CD accompanying the NAS actually contains LNA for linux version 1.4.1 (5). I have installed both versions and the version 1.1.0 does not even find the drives, let alone mount them, so I am using the 1.4.1 version which does seem to work.
On launching LNA 1.4.1 I am asked for password to mount the drive:
Enter your password to perform administrative tasks. The application 'mount -t cifs '//192.168.0.102/Public' '/home/myuser/mount -lacie/192.168.0.102/Public' -0 user=myuser, pass=mypassword' lets you modify essential parts of your system
and both the Public and 4music drives are marked in green as Smb (Windows File Sharing) when connecting as registered user <myuser> with password <mypassword>
When I navigate to smb://d2.local/ I can connect fine to Public drive, but the problem comes when I try to connect to Share drive and I get dialogue box saying Password required for share share on d2.local and requiring me to input username, domain, password.
The user <myuser> on my linux box is the same as that configured for d2. The domain field autopopulates with the workgroup <workgroup> I have set up for that user on the d2, and I enter the appropriate password <mypassword>, but the connection is not authenticated.
Running
/usr/bin/smbclient -L 192.168.0.102
returns:
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.4.1]

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

Users of Lacie's 4L which is used to burn labels for your Lightscribe disks, are required to have the app run with sudo privileges, (the command being: gksudo 4L-gui). On an older version of an Ubuntu install, I had it set up so that it did this automatically, without it, (or me), being asked for a password. I thought it was something I added to the sudoers file, to give 4l-gui automatic authority, but I forgot how i did it.

I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have a Thinkpad E420, Fedora 15

I have Fedora 9 on an external disk, I use it at home on a desktop and at work on a laptop. It works great except that the two machines have different display adaptors. I currently have the xorg.conf arranged so that I manually comment out the driver that I am not using. It works, but I would like not to have to edit the xorg.conf every time I switch machines:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder63) Thu Feb 5 00:18:17 PST 2009
# Xorg configuration created by system-config-display

I have tried googleing for something but cannot arrive at a satisfactory search phrase to yield the required results. I looked at [URL] and tried multiple Device and Screen sections but could not get it to work.

I have an internal hard drive split between Windows 7 and Fedora 12. The Fedora 12 install exists on a LVM which presents a bit of a challenge when trying to mirror the drive. I was trying to use gparted but it doesn't have support for LVM. I discovered g4l, which does a bit-by-bit copy and ran a full disk copy using that from the 500 GB internal to a 500 GB external. Inspecting it with gparted, the copy LOOKS like it went correctly.
However, when I disconnect the internal and attempt to boot to the external (specifically in the BIOS), it's unable to boot to it. It instructs me to insert bootable media and try again. Has something gone wrong with the copy? It SEEMS like g4l finished faster than it should have given the copy rate it was operating at (I had figured out when it should finish up), but the screen saver had been on and when I came back it was back at the menu, so I don't know if it got to 100% or ended prematurely? There were certainly no error messages...

1. An external hard disk with VFAT32 file system has a continuous 23GB file (old HD disk image). It is too large to 'remove to wastebasket' and unlike MS Windows remove to wastebasket does not sense file size and wipe file index .
How to remove a large file in SUSE 11.2?

I have just updated to karmic, and I found that my external hard disk partitions, previously mounted under /media/disk and /media/fat are now referenced by something looking like a UUID, namely /media/7b096ea4-60ee-46b1-95cd-1851b051c40d and /media/4951-95D9.
Is there a way to revert to the old settings? Any application relying on the files on the external hard disk has now stopped working. While I certainly could just change reference (assuming the UUID does not change every session), I'd rather use the old names if possible.

I would like to buy one external USB HDD and install the latest Ubuntu. I will carry this HDD to my job and my home. Is it possible to use this HDD as boot HDD on both computer? Even they are not same just similar? Is this a problem for Ubuntu?

I am trying to mount an external hard disk using a USB docking station
I can see the entries for different partitions of the hard disk in fdisk -l but there is no node file created in /dev folder. So, I am not able to mount.
Something like this -
#sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sdd: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xf5bdf0ff

my old pc died not long ago so I retrieved its hard disk and bought a USB enclosure. that HD had a ubuntu 9.04 partition and an XP one. Something must have gone wrong somewhere as, although i could still boot from jaunty, I was not allowed to upgrade.
It therefore seemed to me natural perform a clean install, so here's what I did:
- on a win7 computer, I inserted a 9.10 bootable disk
- with usb-disk creator, I wanted to install via a spare image so re-formatted the HD
- I couldn't install a mythbuntu 9.10 after that as I giot an error message ("can't mount the drive" or something similar). yet, in win7 the HD is recognised.
So, what am I doing wrong? Are USB HDs not included as USB devices that you can make bootable? Or should I be installing a !straight" ubuntu version, then install MythTV?

I have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m. I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files). Of course this is a
-first-find the *.m files script and
-then copy the files into the hard disk.
What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk. As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has.
