I have an external hard-disk with two partitions, a fat32 and an ext3.I open gparted to resize the partitions but the only allowed operation is to check for information (see screenshot).
View 2 RepliesThe problem is every forum I read pretty much ends up with someone suggesting DD, everyone agreeing and the threads dead-end. This is not a good solution for real world large scale usage which is what I'm trying to do. At least it doesn't appear to be unless there is some switch I have misinterpreted when invoking the command. The problem I have with it is it's super bloated and god awful slow. It tries to write out the entire partition or set of partitions (based on the choice I have made) reguardless of if any of the space had been empty, and lets say the partition I copied from was 80 GB and I copy it to a 160 GB disk/partition... I am left with an 80 GB partition and 80 GB unused space and a need to use another tool such as Gparted to resize the newly imaged disk accordingly.
Right now what I use is Norton Ghost and it can do the job I need in only a couple minutes instead of a couple hours and it sizes the partition to max size all at once. I do not want to use this program tho... The fact is in order to make ghost run at a usable speed I have to use it's Windows and not its DOS version which leaves me using something like BartPE and... that's worse than using Windows ME. Surely someone out there has noticed this is a problem and developed a better program that can at least run on par with Ghost.
why I was hoping for a Linux solution it's because I would like to use a "one stop shop" disk, so to speak, where I can boot into a small linux distro such as Puppy and have a full suite at my disposal rather than booting with one disk, wiping, rebooting with another disk, ghosting then testing everything. I suppose if anyone knows of a distro that can already do all that including a good ghost alternative already packaged I would love that.
I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to resize an external ntfs hard drive, so that I could make room at the front of the disk for a swap partition. At the end of the process gparted encountered an error. It couldn't see my disk again until I rebooted the system. Now, when it looks at the hard drive, it sees it as one big unpartitioned hard drive.
I'm pretty sure all the data is still there, uncorrupted. I just can't access it. How can I fix this?
I'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB external hard drive that I use for backup. I wanted to resize the partition so I used GParted to shrink the 500GB NTFS partition to 400GB. The other 100 I wanted to encrypt and use for some other more important files. For some reason, the shrink failed and I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it. I didn't see the icon appear on the desktop. I went into the Disk Utility to discover that GParted's shrink error deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive. So I created a new 400GB NTFS partition and put back all of my files. The other 100 is unallocated currently.
It will normally mount automatically and show up on the desktop but the hard drive won't mount without me going into the Disk Utility and mounting it through there. I can't even mount it from the Terminal with root privileges. It gives me this:

mount: can't find /media/My Data in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Now, I can unmount with root privileges and I can unmount it from the Disk Utility. I can browse and edit the files within. But I can't unmount it from within Nautilus or on the desktop (the Safely Remove Drive option is not there).
The new 400GB partition also isn't detected by GParted. It just shows the whole drive as unallocated.
I try to install Ubuntu on my new HTPC. I start Ubuntu with the Live CD and it boots fine. Then I want to start installing Ubuntu on my hard disk.Unfortunately the installer does not see my hard disk which has 1 empty ext4 partition. However, it can be seen and managed in GParted.

After I have installed all my programs, I need to install windows and I need visual studio. So I was thinking of taking 20 GB from the /home directory and using that for windows. I can use gparted. However, many posters on here think it is best to use gparted by booting from the disk. However, I cannot do this, as I don't have any DVD drivers. And I can't really afford to buy one just for this reason. What is the best way to do this?
I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated to karmic, and I found that my external hard disk partitions, previously mounted under /media/disk and /media/fat are now referenced by something looking like a UUID, namely /media/7b096ea4-60ee-46b1-95cd-1851b051c40d and /media/4951-95D9.
Is there a way to revert to the old settings? Any application relying on the files on the external hard disk has now stopped working. While I certainly could just change reference (assuming the UUID does not change every session), I'd rather use the old names if possible.
I've 2 computers (one at the job, one at home), different motherboard types but same chipset, having AM2 AMD CPUs but different clock speed. I don't have (I don't want to buy) internal hard disks for these computers.
I would like to buy one external USB HDD and install the latest Ubuntu. I will carry this HDD to my job and my home. Is it possible to use this HDD as boot HDD on both computer? Even they are not same just similar? Is this a problem for Ubuntu?

my old pc died not long ago so I retrieved its hard disk and bought a USB enclosure. that HD had a ubuntu 9.04 partition and an XP one. Something must have gone wrong somewhere as, although i could still boot from jaunty, I was not allowed to upgrade.
It therefore seemed to me natural perform a clean install, so here's what I did:
- on a win7 computer, I inserted a 9.10 bootable disk
- with usb-disk creator, I wanted to install via a spare image so re-formatted the HD
- I couldn't install a mythbuntu 9.10 after that as I giot an error message ("can't mount the drive" or something similar). yet, in win7 the HD is recognised.
So, what am I doing wrong? Are USB HDs not included as USB devices that you can make bootable? Or should I be installing a !straight" ubuntu version, then install MythTV?
My ubuntu login window seems to be chrased and seems no way to restore it. I was planning to move ahead with reinstalling it but could any1 tell me how can i copy data to external hard disk. I am in Mannual restore section with promt staying at root@ubuntu :/#

I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

Long story short, after reinstalling windows 7 and messing around a little with its partition and the other ntfs one (resizing etc); Gparted won't open the disk. It shows all the disk as unallocated space, And throws a message to the terminal which says something like "Can't have a partition out of the disk." Funny thing is that *almost* everything is working fine. Everything works except that ubuntu can't use the swap. (Dmesg says: "Swap area shorter than signature indicates") Also, testdisk, if i run a deep search for partitions, finds the last partition twice, but the second time the partition goes from 37129 0 1 to 40240 254 63 , while the disk ends at 38913 255 63. The problem is that I can't use Gparted now and I want to resize a partition.Also I believe that going without swap is not good for ubuntu.
I wanted to shrink my windows partition and enlarge ubuntu's partition,I shrunk windows ok,but Gparted wont let me enlarge the Linux partition to the left side,toward the unallocated space....Gparted will allow me to expand my windows partition back,I even tried creating a new partition and formatted it to ext4,and then deleting the partition.no go,I read somewhere that Gparted may not allow you to move the front side of the Linux partition,.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m. I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files). Of course this is a
-first-find the *.m files script and
-then copy the files into the hard disk.
What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk. As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has.
I'd like to know if there is a software or a distro which does the following: Imagine having two PCs. What the software should do is allow to turn one PC's hard disks to be accessed as external hard disks. It would be great if I could tell which USB port and which hard disk should be accessible like this. Now when everything is selected properly one could just plug in the other PC's USB cable and have access to the selected drive.
