Ubuntu Installation :: Dropbox - Can't Download Daemon - Not A Gzip File
Aug 23, 2010
Using lucid LTS, I have no problem installing dropbox using either the website download .deb, or adding it to my repositories.
The problem comes when I try and run the software. At this point it unsuccessfully tries to download the required proprietary daemon.
In the terminal, running:
'sudo dropbox start -i'
Gives:
Starting Dropbox...Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/dropbox", line 242, in handle_data_waiting
self.unpack_dropbox()
File "/usr/bin/dropbox", line 252, in unpack_dropbox
I am having some trouble making the dropbox daemon start at boot. I followed these instructions -> [URL], which are basically a replica of the original instructions from the Dropbox Wiki [URL]. The installation went fine, except that the machine still cannot start the daemon at boot. I tried to modify the init.d script a bit (see the attachment), but it still wont work (I am not sure if my changes made any significant difference, though). The daemon will only start if I invoke it manually after login with the command:
Code:
[user@machine:~]$ service dropbox start
Which executes the daemon just fine. I also tried adding this line of code to crontab:
Code:
@reboot /etc/init.d/dropbox start
This command starts the daemon if I check with the command "service dropbox status", but if I execute the official dropbox CLI command:
Code:
~/bin/dropbox.py status
it says that Dropbox isn't running and I still have to execute it manually.
P.s.: The machine runs Ubuntu Server 10.04, with all the latest system patches and updates.
I am going crazy with a gzip file. I can decompress the file in Windows using WinRAR but it is impossible on any UNIX operating system. the file seems to be ok. If I do file the_name_of_the_file.gz
I get: the_name_of_the_file.gz: gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Sun Jan 30 14:10:21 2011
But if I do gunzip -f the_name_of_the_file.gz I alsways get: gzip: the_name_of_the_file.gz: unexpected end of file The same problem happens when I try to extract the file using the GUI tool in Ubuntu or MacOSX,
I have downloaded apache(file name: httpd-2.2.17.tar.gz.bz2) throughw wget at /usr/local/src now i m not able to do next step with gzip command I am using following command and getting error
]# gzip -d httpd-2.2.17.tar.gz.bz2 gzip: httpd-2.2.17.tar.gz.bz2.gz: No such file or directory
I have installed debian on my dell latitude d630 laptop and am currently making a derivative for others to use. however I can't get the wireless to work. I downloaded it from the broadcom site but it comes as a gzip file instead of a deb file. if I extract the gzip file I don't get any installable (deb) files. I need the wireless to work because now a bridged network from my windows laptop isn't working.
I am trying to upload an IOS in the cisco NAC Appliance. The IOS version has to be updated as 4.8. I am getting the below error when i tried. File is not in gzip format Child return status 1 Error exit delayed from previous errors. I am using the below command to unzip the IOS file. tar xzvf ccca_upgrade-4.8.0-from-4.6.x.tar.gz.
have a gzip file ABC_000023232.gzipBCD_023232032.gzipI want to split these files into smaller files but keep the extension same because I am using this as a variable in a script
I would like to use DropBox, but I really don't want Nautilus on my system.I downloaded the source to compile, thinking it would allow me to use a different file browser, but unfortunately it seems they made it dependent on Nautilus.Is there a way to compile it using a different file browser (Thunar in this case)? And if not, is there an alternative to DropBox out there that works on multiple platforms?
Is anyone aware of an open-source equivalent to Box or Dropbox I can install on my server? Password protected logon, easy file upload and download and of course secure?
Is there a way to share files over a VPN with a Dropbox type download system? I want the files to be able to update to a local file on the clients when updated on the server.

I put Ubuntu on my computer about a week ago, and have not been able to download many new programs or updates. For expmple, I'll go over to Update Manager and try to install something, but it will stop usually halfway through or near the end and show me an error message. usually, the message looks like this:FAILED TO DOWNLOAD FILE PACKAGESCheck your Internet connection
Details: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...u10.2_i386.deb Hash Sum mismatch Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...u10.2_i386.deb Hash Sum mismatch
I'm not if I should download the i386 or the x86 iso. I'm not very familiar with hardware. The processor in the computer I want to install fedora on has an AMD64 athlon processor. My confusion comes from the fact that when I bought this computer it has what I assume is a 32-bit vista installation, and the recovery disc doesn't have the option to choose 64-bit or 32-bit installs like the one for my 64-bit vista machine does. The link for the computer I'm going to try fedora out on is here: [URL]. (I know it's not that great, but it's good for tinkering around with.)
I just upgraded to 11.04 and am trying to install Dropbox. I installed nautilus-dropbox and then the installation started, but it gets stuck every time while unpacking dropbox at 97%.
I am a relative moron when it comes to using Ubuntu. This is a relatively old machine and I purchased it from a friend. She said Ubuntu was a good choice to maximize space as opposed to XP. I want to find a way (and maybe an example of one) to get a torrent download app on my computer for file sharing. I found one that uses Java, but when I tried to install java it was utter failure.
I'm having problems with the Flash plugin since yesterday. It is caused by a file which is not available in the repo:
[Code]...
download failed The Flash plugin is NOT installed. In that archive the file adobe-flashplugin_10.0.42.34.orig.tar.gz is missing, but there is a file for 10.0.45.2. I couldn't figure out how I can install this version (does not even show up when I select all software sources including backports).
I just did a clean install and started with the software installation. After I installed dropbox, a window popped up asking me for administrator's password....I put in my user password and it said wrong password (i just now remembered not adding myself to administrator's group while creating my user...ouch!) after which a notficiation came and went too fast for me to read it properly....it said something like unable to set user /etc/x something something.....I know it sounds completely vague but that is all I could before it disappeared.
Now, nautilus won't open unless I click on the dropbox icon below in the taskbar.I guess I can manage for a while but I'm hoping to find a solution to the problem.
I'm trying to install DropBox so that the 'DropBox' folder gets placed in /dev/sda4 which is a spare ext4 partition on my disk. Root is /dev/sda1, swap is /dev/sda2 and home is /dev/sda3.
The DropBox installer does not show /dev/sda4 as a location to install it to in the 'Location' drop-down selector.
In Dolphin, the /dev/sda4 partition appears as '19.7 Gib Hard Drive'.
Do I need to do something to make /dev/sda4 accessible to the DropBox installer?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop running on Windows 7, I just download the iso file for Fedora 14 desktop edition, the live media download, and burned it to a new CD-RW, I can't seem to locate the file I need to boot it.
I've had a problem doing updates to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic for months. I'd like to upgrade, but figure I should solve the update issue first. The output of "apt-get update" is:
I've installed all the programs I need but Dropbox which is very important for me as all my computers are connect with this service.The installation of Dropbox stop everytime at "unpacking 97 %" .
In a previous thread I had detailed an issue I was having with avahi not firing up properly at startup.As a bit of background: the services available on the server aren't advertising until I restart the avahi-daemon manually after startup - The syslog shows the daemon starting on boot, but it never seems to access the service file.I was wondering if it is possible that this may be a file permission problem?
I am learning Linux daemon programming and write a simple daemon program. The issue is no data is written to the log file (/var/tmp/simpledeamon.log) though the file is successfully created (it's file size is zero from ls -l output). Could someone kindly point out the error in my program,The code is based on the Devin Watson's article at Here is the code:
// simplydaemon.cpp // A simple Linux daemon. #include <sys/types.h>
I have a program I use that downloads a file a couple times a day, but it does not name it how I want it named. So I am looking for something that i can run as a daemon that will rename the downloaded file as soon as it is downloaded to my specified directory and rename it according to my needs.
