Ubuntu :: Grub Error 15 - Couldn't Combine Two Unallocated Spaces Under Single Partition

Apr 9, 2011

i found in some thread that Swap space wasnt really necessary for RAM of over 1 GB, and true to it, i wasnt using using much of my 4GB allocated for swap ever so i deleted it ( dunno if it was wise, but didnt face any problems when i first deleted). today, i found out from another thread on a way to extend the size of /home directory if it was on a seperate mountpoint, and if space was available on my hard disk.

i just had 1 GB allocated to home directory and it used to fill up quite rapidly (due to cache from google chrome). I made a backup of my home directory contents, and i deleted the /home partition through the Disk utility. Somehow i couldnt combine the two unallocated spaces under a single partition why is that? (My plan was to combine that 1GB and the 4GB from the earlier swap space to use a 5GB home partition.) then i restarted and ever since i have been seeing the Grub error, and am not able to access my operating systems normally. GRUB Loading stage 1.5 Grub loading, please wait Error 15 . i am attaching the results.txt from my system obtained by booting through a liveCD. Something tells me that the way ive been following has been a roundabout one or a very inefficient one. how can i restore my system to normalcy

Software :: Program: Compile Jpeg Into Single File, Like A Book, And Maintain Quality?

Mar 30, 2010

I've been trying to find a way to take a bunch of jpeg images and while maintaining their quality (no loss at all) compile them in such a way as to make one coherent file. Maybe something like a pdf, but while maintaining quality. I've tried converting to pdf and djvu, but the quality is always reduced, but if you know of a way to preserve quality, I'll use it.An alternative is an image viewer that can look inside archives, so I just make a zip or tgz of the images and then use the image viewer to access them. I've tried a few

Ubuntu :: Cannot Compile Java-based Packages In R

Jun 8, 2010

I'm trying to compile JGR, rJava, etc. for use w/ my updated R. My configuration of Ubuntu (9.10 Karmic, kernel 2.6.31-22-generic) and R (version 2.11.1; from lib.stat.cmu.edu source) shouldn't be terribly unusual. But, all my efforts to compile Java programs for R fail, possibly because of something in my Ubuntu configuration of Java.First, I ran: R CMD javareconf. The output from that tells me that "JAVA_HOME is not a valid path, ignoring" and the cpp flags are set to nothing. The javareconf fills most of the variables with references to openjdk. JAVA_HOME, as far as I can tell, points to a properly installed copy of Sun Java. When I run update.packages(checkBuilt=T) with this, it unsurprisingly tells me that "One or more Java configuration variables are not set" and all of my Java based programs fail to compile.

I've tried switching the default Java to the Sun version using "sudo update-alternatives --config java". Now, javareconf fills in the cpp flag and variables point to the Sun version, though I still get the error msg that JAVA_HOME is not a valid path (though javareconf sets the home path to: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre). When I try to compile rJava, I get the error: rJava, "JNI types differ from the native type."Does anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this? Alternatively, is there somewhere I can report these problems so they might get fixed in future versions?I suspect I can't be the only person having these problems.

Ubuntu :: Can't Compile Source Packages Under KDE4

Wanted to switch to Kubuntu and decided a clean install was the way to go. Though the learning curve isn't too tough, I've hit a serious snag: When I try to compile a source package according to the similar instructions in each of the README files, I get the same error message;

Instructions:

mkdir build
cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ..
make
su -c 'make install'

I'm liking this KDE 4.4 setup, but if I can't install the improvements from kde-look.org

Ubuntu Installation :: Install With Up To Date Packages In Single Pass

Apr 23, 2010

is there a way to install Ubuntu with up-to-date versions of all packages right away? To clarify: With the normal LiveCDs, in order to install an up-to-date Ubuntu Lucid, I have to download a 700 MB LiveCD, install Ubuntu, and then use the Update Manager (or apt-get) to upgrade all outdates packages, which by now should be another about 300 MB. Old versions of SUSE Linux had the option of downloading an ~40MB installer ISO which did not contain any packages itself, but would download and install the most recent versions of all necessary packages.

Is there such a facility for Ubuntu as well? Or a way of using an outdated Ubuntu LiveCD (e.g. Lucid Beta 1) to still install an up-to-date system in a single pass? I am *not* talking about netboot images such as netboot.me or boot.kernel.org, which AFAIK will download the full normal Ubuntu ISO during boot, so that I would still have to upgrade the system afterwards.

Fedora Installation :: Preupgrade Leftover Packages - 176 F13 Packages Remaining

Nov 17, 2010

I recently upgraded from F13 to F14 using "preupgrade". This is the first time I've used preupgrade. So far, F14 is running OK. There are some leftovers from F13 and I'm wondering if this is correct.

Q1: There are 176 F13 packages remaining. [alfrugal@localhost Documents]$ rpm -qa | grep fc13 | wc -l 176 Is this OK? FWIW, after the upgrade, I ran "package-cleanup --orphans" as recommended by the "preupgrade" page on the Fedora Project wiki.

Q2: Also, my GRUB menu was correctly updated for F14, but it still contains the three entries it had for F13. Is it normal for the preupgrade process to require the user to clean up the obsolete entries from the GRUB menu?
