Fedora :: Fedora 12 Annoying Hiss From Laptop Speakers
Jan 8, 2010
I just installed Fedora 12 on my Toshiba laptop and ran into the same problem I had with Fedora 11, only this time it remains unresolvable: an unstoppable hiss coming from the built-in speakers.I tried the Pulseaudio fixed and workarounds, but alas, no joy. Not to be a complainer (because I *am* humbly asking for help, here) but at this stage of development I would think something like sound would be firmly and irrevocably resolved, and not require workarounds.

I am running fedora 14 64 bit on Dell Inspiron. All of a sudden sound from speakers is not coming. They work in windows. I am suspecting some update with pulseaudio. However, earplugs work.

I have a few problems with my sound. First off, I don't know exactly what chip it is, but my laptop is an Acer Aspire 6530 running a fully updated Fedora 13. Sound itself works, but that's about as far as it goes. So, here are my problems:Built-in laptop speakers don't auto-mute/turn off whenever something it plugged into the headphones jack.Microphone doesn't seem to work, both the one next to my webcam as well as any mic attached to the mic jack. The webcam itself works fine.I would be really happy if I could get these issues fixed. I was so impressed that I made Fedora my only OS on my laptop, but fixing a few more things would be even better.

I just installed fedora 12 on my new lenovo laptop sl510 where I have pulseaudio over my alsa. The problem is, when I plugin headphones in 3.5 jack the speakers dont mute which is really irritating. I tried switching from "analog output" to "analog headphones", but what that does it mutes both.

Well, the title pretty much sums it up. Whenever i plug in my external speakers, my laptop speakers continue to put out sound, which is good until i turn up the volume and hear rattling.
I am running ubuntu 9.04 64-bit 2.6.28-13 on an MSi GX620.

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my buddy's laptop. It's working alright, except when we try to plug the external computer speakers into the sound jack in the front, there is no change; it keeps playing through the onboard speakers. My friend and I are getting pretty frustrated because we use those speakers to watch movies with, and the onboard speakers aren't sufficient. If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.

I'm getting very random full system freezes with F13. The keyboard stops responding completely. Sometimes the mouse (and the mouse only) still works. I those cases, I can log in via ssh, kill kdm, and everything goes back to normal until the next freeze. However, in most cases, I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes the system goes on for days without a problem, and sometimes it freezes 10 times in a day (It's in one of those days that the bug-screen saved me from flying out the window). I also had this problem on F12. I'm not sure if its video-driver related as both nvidia and nouveau experience this behaviour. In fact, I'm not at all sure what the cause may be.

I am experiencing sound problems after an upgrade to kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE from kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i686.PAE in several games like Neverwinter Nights (linux binaries) and Warcraft III (PlayOnLinux). The sound stops and changes into a very choppy annoying sound. When I boot into the old kernel the problems are gone.

I have the typing break enabled through the keyboard preferences, and when the break ends, I hear an alarm beep (sounds like the alarm on a wristwatch) through my speakers.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to turn this off.
It did not always do this, but started when I upgraded my system to Fedora 12, and it persisted through to the upgrade to F13.
There are three computers in my office running F13, and mine is the only one that does this. I can find no trace online of anyone else having this problem.
Can anyone tell me how to turn this off?
I'm running Gnome 2.30.0 on Fedora 13 (x86_64)

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X60. When I plug either headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack (whether on the docking station or the laptop itself), the laptop speakers aren't muted. I can hear sound coming from both simultaneously. I've tried editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in all kinds of ways, my most recent attempt being to add the line:
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
but still with no success.
I'm using 10.04 with the 2.6.32 kernel. I tried installing the .34 kernel with no better results, so I switched back.

I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and have installed Slackware 13.0 on it. I'm not getting any sound through the speakers. I tried configuring alsa first. However, I did not have any success. Next I also tried inserting some kernel modules corresponding to sound drivers, which was present in /lib. Again, I'd no sound output.I can get sound through earphones though.I've been stuck with this problem from some time.

I have an acer timelinex 5830tg notebook. After weeks of frustration, i finally have a linux setup that is stable. Thank god for debian. I don't know why I mess with anything else. Anyway, i'm unable to get my built in laptop speakers to work. I get sound through headphone jack, and I hear sound coming from the built in speakers for a split second when plugging in/unplugging my AC adaptor.Let me know if there is any other output needed, which may assist in this issue. Hopefully someone can help me out.

Im running Jessie, and have run into issue with my laptop sound card.
If is shutdown the laptop with the headphones plugged in, and remove them while its off, system wont recognize they are not there any more and is probably sending sound out to this output. To get the sound out to my laptop speakers I need to plug the headphones while the system is up, and remove them again. Only then will the output device work properly.

Until recently, when connected my laptop to the stereo via audio out, i had sound coming only from the stereo. I don't know why and when exactly this happened, but now when the stereo is connected, i get sound from the laptop speakers and stereo speakers simultaneously. Is this a bug? I'd like to mute only my laptop speakers but haven't figured out how. I've tried every setting in "sound" or "audio" or whatever it's called in english, but to no avail.Any ideas how to turn off the laptop speakers?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio VPCEE2E1E. I've been able to avoid any major problems, however, my onboard sound doesn't work. I've tried plugging speakers into the laptop and this works perfectly. I'm rather confused as to why the onboard sound isn't working though.
Here's the output for lspci on my machine:

When I play audio, the sound comes only out of the laptop speakers, not the headphones that are plugged in. I downloaded ALSA mixer and nothing on it seems to help, although at the top in the middle it says Intel IbexPeak HDMI, which I guess is my sound card.

I might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.
[Code].....
Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.
