Slackware :: Lack Of Sound On Laptop Via Speakers
Jul 19, 2011
I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and have installed Slackware 13.0 on it. I'm not getting any sound through the speakers. I tried configuring alsa first. However, I did not have any success. Next I also tried inserting some kernel modules corresponding to sound drivers, which was present in /lib. Again, I'd no sound output.I can get sound through earphones though.I've been stuck with this problem from some time.

I have an acer timelinex 5830tg notebook. After weeks of frustration, i finally have a linux setup that is stable. Thank god for debian. I don't know why I mess with anything else. Anyway, i'm unable to get my built in laptop speakers to work. I get sound through headphone jack, and I hear sound coming from the built in speakers for a split second when plugging in/unplugging my AC adaptor.Let me know if there is any other output needed, which may assist in this issue. Hopefully someone can help me out.

Until recently, when connected my laptop to the stereo via audio out, i had sound coming only from the stereo. I don't know why and when exactly this happened, but now when the stereo is connected, i get sound from the laptop speakers and stereo speakers simultaneously. Is this a bug? I'd like to mute only my laptop speakers but haven't figured out how. I've tried every setting in "sound" or "audio" or whatever it's called in english, but to no avail.Any ideas how to turn off the laptop speakers?

I might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.
[Code].....
Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.

I looked around the settings on Ubuntu and I cannot prevent sound from being played on my laptop speakers when external (more powerful) speakers are plugged in. Windows automatically defers all sound output to the external ones as soon as it is plugged in.

I'm using openSUSE 11.4.I found others with the same issue, but this guy's solution looks like he might be using some different version and his solution doesn't work (can't find the file he edited).

I have a problem with my sound card Microphone is working, headphones work but with kind of a low audio output, laptop speakers do not work at all. I have checked alsamixer and pulseaudio nothing is muted, tried all sort of different combinations and pulseaudio actually sees that mplayer for example is playing music, or skype is in videocall and using the sound device, but nothing is coming out of the speakers.

I am new to fedora 13. My problem is that I can not hear any sound from my laptop's internal speakers (that works f9 in windows--so no h/w probs!) but when I connect external headphones, everything is heard.I have tried several commands from various internet sources since past one week. I don't understand many of the commands that I have run, but that has somehow helped me to run media files and hear sound on HEADPHONES.

I'm using a HP 7100 laptop and have tried installing the latest versions of Suse, Mandriva, as well as Slakware and have repeatedly been faced with two problems: .1. No Sound: Research via the web suggests that the lack of sound MAY BE due to the particular HP laptop model but there is a doubt here. Sound does work with the Winow$ 7 software but it does not work with any of the above noted Linux softwares. Are any of you familiar with this? .2. KPPP: Are any of you using KPPP with the latest version of Fedora, using KDE4? If so, how did you get it to work?

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my buddy's laptop. It's working alright, except when we try to plug the external computer speakers into the sound jack in the front, there is no change; it keeps playing through the onboard speakers. My friend and I are getting pretty frustrated because we use those speakers to watch movies with, and the onboard speakers aren't sufficient. If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.

I was over in the Desktop forum yesterday and apparently 'event sounds' are available for Xfce and are part of the original package, but I've never seen them made available, that is, the switch to turn them on isn't where it is suppose to be, in any Slackware specific package of Xfce.I've used 4.61 that came with Slackware64 13.1, 4.61 from the Salix depository, 4.62 from Mr. Workman, 4.62 from 'current' and recently 4.8 from Mr. Workman. None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.

Just installed fedora 13. Everything is great except for the total lack of sound. I'm trying to use the onboard audio. Motherboard is asus M4A89TD. In alsamixer all of my devices are turned on to max.
Code:
$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
05:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc HD48x0 audio
Code:
$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
tcp_lp 2055 0
fuse 54749 4
ipt_MASQUERADE 2208 1
iptable_nat 5420 1
nf_nat 19059 2 ipt_MASQUERADE,iptable_nat .....
When I open pavucontrol, under output devices it lists 'HDA ATI HDMI Digital Stereo (HDMI)' and 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo'. I think the correct device needs to be the the ATI SB one, but is missing from the list.

Using Dell Inspiron 1564. In windows 7 and other distros like ubuntu, openSUSE sound was perfect. However the sound here is pretty low. Not sure if there's some configuration I am missing. I ran alsaconf, maxed out the bars in alsamixer and did a alsactl store. But the sound is still low.

I don't know what I did but I lost all audio. I'm running F15 with gnome 3. By opening system settings and then sound I don't find anything muted. Under hardware I have 3 devices, the first is RS880 Audio Device (Radeon HD 4200) this one has no sound at all when I click test speakers. Then I have quickcam comm STX and then I have Internal Audio which works by clicking on test speakers.. I have no clue of where to start to fix this but reinstall everything again.

This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X60. When I plug either headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack (whether on the docking station or the laptop itself), the laptop speakers aren't muted. I can hear sound coming from both simultaneously. I've tried editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in all kinds of ways, my most recent attempt being to add the line:
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
but still with no success.
I'm using 10.04 with the 2.6.32 kernel. I tried installing the .34 kernel with no better results, so I switched back.

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 OS in a VMware player in which I am unable to get any sound at all. The host windows os plays sound so it can't be the sound card.
The default player is rythymbox and I also have VLC media player installed. Neither will produce any sound. When I press the "test speakers" button on the sound preferences hardware tab, there is no sound.

Im running Jessie, and have run into issue with my laptop sound card.
If is shutdown the laptop with the headphones plugged in, and remove them while its off, system wont recognize they are not there any more and is probably sending sound out to this output. To get the sound out to my laptop speakers I need to plug the headphones while the system is up, and remove them again. Only then will the output device work properly.
