Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop With No Removeable Media Of Any Sort?
Jun 7, 2010
I've got an Acer Aspire One. I don't like windows. I have used Ubuntu many times in the past and love it. I want to install it on this thing, but it's as minimalist a computer as it gets. No DVD drive or anything. It weighs about as much as a small bottle of soda. I have no access to USB Drives, External DVD drives, External floppies, external anything. I do have a cat but I don't think that's going to help. In fact, he's trying to step on my keyboard Anyway, I know you can do a "Frugal install" off the hard disk but I have absolutely no idea what it is.
What exactly is a frugal install? Can I partition the hard drive and leave my windows alone (Got some data, programs and porn holding me down) with a frugal install? Is there a difference between a frugal install and a fancy high-tech DVD install when it's finished (E.G Limitations, stability, chances of computer asploding)?

Fed up with Windows and ready to become a Linux convert. Here's the only problem:
I've created no less than four separate Live USB distros - all using different USB sticks -
yet my HP Pavilion dv7 refuses to recognize any of them as "bootable devices."
1) Have formatted USB sticks in FAT16 & FAT32 - neither made a difference.
2) Have created bootable USB sticks using Ubuntu Minimal Live install; Ubuntu full Live install; PuppyLinux Live install; even a simple gparted live install - none will boot.
3) Have checked & re-checked that BIOS is set to boot first from USB drive device.
4) 2 of the 4 USB sticks are new, fresh out of the packaging; and 3 of the 4 USB sticks are each from different manufacturers - so I'm fairly certain it's not a issue of a particular brand being incompatible, nor is it due to the sticks being corrupted somehow.
5) Each of the 4 live distros appears to have downloaded just fine - all necessary files appear to be in order.
6) Have tried using Unetbootin, Ubuntu's own live usb tool, and 1 or 2 others - all have failed to boot my HP laptop.
7) Have even tried removing all non-essential hardware before booting - even booting with no hard drives installed - system still returns the error "no bootable device detected."
This laptop is only 2 years old; I know it should be able to boot from USB. I can boot from a (rather old) SliTaz distro on CD just fine - but I need a persistent USB stick so I can easily add packages as needed, etc...s.

I'm at wits end...10.04 won't connect to a wireless network on my laptop, and that sort of makes it useless. What is the easiest way to revert back to 9.10? I have a dual-boot system with XP and I'd rather not have to start from scratch.

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

do you have any suggestions how I can install Ubuntu netbook edition on an old Laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook 2131) currently running Windows 2000 with all servicepacks (if I recall correctly it is SP5) without boot-support for USB-Stick/Media, CD-ROM, PXE/netboot; booting is only supported from builtin harddisk and from floppy-disk drive, which is definitely broken. (with working floppy disk drive all would be fine). I also installed WUBI, but the harddisk is only 4 GB, so I had to use the USB-Stick as the Ubuntu install partition and this is not supported by the Laptop as it cannot boot from it.
Has anybody an idea, is it viable to online-resize an NTFS-partition to create a small linux-partition for bootstrapping the install?? I do not want to, it's still useful, so when crashing the NTFS-filesystem is likely I prefer not to take this route and leave the laptop with Win2k installed.

I have recently installed Amarok, however despite appearing to have transferred all my music files and folders into itself, they won't play. Only the default track, Art of Nations, keeps playing every time I try to play a track!

I am running Ubuntu Server Lucid.I want to have USB drives and network drives mount at boot, however the drives *may* not be there (after all these are USB drives and also the network may be down making network drives inaccessible).I tried putting entries in the fstab using the UUID, however the boot just hangs if the a drive is not connected (that ureadahead headache).

This happens at very irregular intervals. A week or two can go by with out this occurring, other times two or three times in one day. When these screenshots were taken, no applications were launched other than Top and Monitor. The laptop is mostly unusable when this is going on.
When I disconnect the wireless, everything quiets down. I can reconnect the wireless, and everything is back to normal. I have had this problem on two different laptops, with different Ubuntu versions.

My fedora 12 laptop will no longer boot properly. i get my bios screen, then the fedora intro screen (with the f / infinity symbol on a blue background) after a brief blank screen, then i get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. i can type things but nothing happens when i do, and the computer never exits out of that screen.
is there anything i can do to correct this problem short of a reinstall? i really hate to lose some of the drivers i went to a lot of trouble to find and install as well as some software and some user files.
p.s.: the last thing i did before the problem was to use yum to install quite a few fonts (xorg-...) but it ran after that and i think even went through one reboot with no problems.

I have a weird problem, i have an LG LCD screen that i connect to my laptop via HDMI through nVidia. I was watching full length movies and everything worked perfectly. So, i got myself a new, slightly bigger LG LCD, and now, when I play a movie, about 20-60 minutes into the movie, my machine just turns off. doesnt even shutdown properly, just turns itself off, as if the power ran out (which it didnt..)
I thought maybe i had too many things installed, or mabe i should wait for a new version.. so i waited till i reinstalled a fresh 10.4 on a new partition, played a movie, and again, the machine just suddenly turned itself off.
i tried looking in the system log viewer, but between shutdown and startup, i see nothing special (besides ALOT of "rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS returned, data->length = 105")..
i tried running 64bit & 32bit and it has the same error.

It looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland ...anyway...is there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?

When I close my laptop and open it the screen become grey and blotchy with almost an argyle pattern. This has only started happening after I configured the usb ports to work in my VM. My startup screen also says something about a usb problem, and S for skip and M to manually fix it but I have had no problems with my usb. Oh except for my computer won't start

I've just installed Squeeze on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C660D - adapter is a Realtek 8188CE) and was following the instructions on debian.org to set up WiFi. I've changed the source list, done the firmware update and the modprobe, but when I get to step 5 where it says to verify that I have a wireless interface, the output from iwconfig just lists lo, eth0 and pan0, all with "no wireless extensions". Does anyone have any ideas what I should do now?

i am using ubuntu media on a desktop for all of my multimedia needs and i just installed jaunty (alt install) on an old gateway solo laptop(266 mhz and 186mb ram) to use as my controller/remote using desktop sharing, the problem is the laptop can't keep up with the desktop and everything is all jerky (especially watching dvds). So here are the questions, what can i uninstall from the laptop to make performance better and/or is there another option short of buying a wireless keyboard/mouse (I'm poor and use what I have(besides i like having an up-close display for text and stuff)).

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion laptop (dv6130US)Although I have not checked everything out, I believe the only hardware issue I have (so far) it getting the media card reader to work.I used the lspci command to determine if the memory card was recognized and got the following response (I've only copied what I believe to be the relative info)05:05.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C8321394Controller05:05.1 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 19)05:05.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C843 MMC Host Controller (rev 0a)05:05.3 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter (rev 05)05:05.4 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller (rev ff)I then created a directory in /dev called mcr sudo mkdir /dev/mcrand created a directory in /media called mcrsudo mkdir /media/mcrI then tried to mount the cardreadersudo mount /dev/mcr /media/mcrbut I got the following errormount: /dev/mcr is not a block device

I just installed Fedora 14 (running KDE) on my HP DV6Z-SE. It came pre-packaged with Windows 7 and I am running a dual-boot (I kept Windows for gaming purposes). Anyway, problem is I am unable to play media sounds. I've tried playing my music (all OGG Vorbis) on both DragonPlayer and VLC, to no avail. When I go to Phonon, I have two options for prefered devices, "Redwood HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5600 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI)" and "Internal Audio Analog Stereo".
When I test them, the Radeon one never plays sound, while the Internal Audio plays the test sound sometimes (rarely). I tried moving the latter up the preference order, but it changed nothing.

I have a Pure Evoke Flow radio that connect to my wireless router for streaming internet radio, this works fine. It also has the functionality to connect to a hard drive over wifi and play any MP3 files on it and it runs on Linux.
With Windows (sorry) I just click on the folder and make it Shareable, on the Radio I then set it to search for servers and it finds my wife's PC and plays her music.
I have (I believe) set my music directory on Ubuntu 9.10 to be shareable, it downloaded and installed a couple of files including samba and then rebooted. However my Radio cannot see it.

We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs, and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix. For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.

I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

[edit]I just found out, that the laptop keyboar seems to be in numlock mode... meaning that the keys [j,k,l] is mapped to [1,2,3] etc

I'm trying to install ubuntu on my laptop running Windows XP, and created a cd with ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso on it, about 706 Mb. Anyway, I've tried powering off and on, and my PC doesn't try to run the install CD in the CD drive. It just ignores it and starts windows. I've done this several times. I remember one time it asked how I wanted to install ubuntu, and I selected the "inside of windows" option so I can boot either Windows XP or ubuntu. But nothing happens.

I am installing 10.04 on my laptop which currently has Windows 7. I plan on dual booting my laptop and figured that just like prior releases it will detect my Windows 7 OS and say "Hey I found Win7, do you want to wipe the partition or install side by side and use grub?"
Well in this case, its telling me that no installed operating systems have been found and I only get the option to use the whole disc or I can go ahead and use gparted to create my own partitions.
