Feb 14, 2010New to ubuntu 9.10...here is the deal..i movd the gnome panel on the right side of the screen and it was hidden...but after few minutes i lost the panel...

Jul 25, 2010I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and things went pretty smooth. The only real issue is that I lost the transparency settings for the menu & indicator applets on my top knome panel. I simply don't remember how i did it last time, and i've been searching the net for an hour for a solution with no luck. Many results suggested the use of the Compiz Settings Manager's opacity settings, but that opacity applies to everything, including the text & icons. I thought i used the "gnome color chooser" package to do it last time, but I cannot find the option in the gui. how to make the background of the menu (applications/places/system) and indicator applet have transparent backgrounds while retaining full text/icon brightness?

Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

May 12, 2010I've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.
PD: My grafic card is a Matrox G550.

version: gnome-applets-2.32.0-1.fc14.x86_64
symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

May 2, 2011I have had no issue with the panel's transparency in previous Ubuntu versions. This all started w/ Natty. I set up transparency (right click on panel, Nav through Properties > Background, Check "Solid Color," slide bar to my preferred opacity, & click "Close." The panel looks as follows: But when I restart the computer it goes grey:
killall command doesn't work, I have moved the panel, I have created a new one. The "closest" I found were people complaining (back in December) that the theme switched to grey. But I don't think the panel is taking up another theme, it is simply not painting the transparent image.
I didn't like Unity so I disabled it (still installed). I also removed indicator-me and indicator-messenger via synaptic as I have since Lucid Lynx. I removed the black bubble notifications and removed the shutdown/logout/restart confirmation/countdown prompt w/ a couple of code-hacks I found online as I have since Jaunty Jackalope. I also tried to change the opacity though an option inside Compiz's "Opacity, Brightness and Saturation". This also made AWN icons transparent so I undid it. I use the "Glossy P" theme w/ "Snow Apple" icons.
OpenSUSE :: Panel Lost From Fresh KDE Desktop?
Mar 10, 2010After a fresh 11.2 KDE install on a second PC, the starting desktop exhibited a transparent panel, with "Desktop Folder" as a title, and five (5) icons. In the course of modifying the desktop icons, this was deleted. I have looked, searched, Google'd etc, to find a process to restore this transparent folder. No luck so far. I have placed the icons back, all works correctly, though I would like to know how to recreate this transparent rectangular panel. (My other two Linux PC's are Gnome (one openSUSE 11.2 and one Ubuntu 9.10).

I've managed to ALT-RIGHT-click-add some launchers to the top gnome-panel. When i now click on a launcher the gnome-panel crashes(?) and reappeares, but the program starts without problems. If i do this two times in a row (1 sec diff or so) the gnome-crash screen appears and i've got to log out although all the programs are still running without any problems.

Nov 19, 2010I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.
When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).
I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.
