Ubuntu :: Files Are Erased By Windows?
Oct 13, 2010
So I downloaded a bunch of study notes to my shared partition in Ubuntu. When I logged in on Windows 7 though, they weren't there. Logging back in Ubuntu also shows none of the study notes.
What are the possible causes of this?

I was resizing partitions wit GParted and by mistake I went to Dispositive -> Create Partitions table, and click Apply by mistake. Now all my partitions vanished. I already try testdisk, and gpart and didn't work. All my files and photos with more than 15 years vanished.

I accidentally erased my "panel" and now I cannot minimize windows however they remain open. I have a down arrow, an X and a - on the top of my pages when I hit the - the page disappears but still stays active, example im on ..... and I hit that expecting to minimize but the page closes and I cannot retrieve it but whatever I was viewing continues to play. when I hit the down arrow the page just kinda shuffles to a different side of the screen and is basically useless.

I did an upgrade this morning, reboot, and when I open Evolution, it asks as if it were the first time I open it, if I would like to restore content. I lost everything, contacts (very important), dates (more than important, vital), mails (mails are no problem they can be retrieved from my pop)..

I've been using Ubuntu since 7.04 and I've never had this happen. I was at 10.04 and I downloaded the torrent iso of 11.04 and burned it to a CD and used that to upgrade. I don't know if that was the problem, but doing the upgrade that way erased my fstab. When I tried to recreate it, I was getting errors mapping to the fileshares. Turned out the upgrade uninstalled cifs/smbfs as well. In addition to uninstalling wine. After reinstalling, everything is ok.... so far. This was NOT the smoothest upgrade.

I've just logged in to the desktop and I can't see my old desktop background picture and the plasmoids which were on it (clock, folder view). As far as I can tell nothing in my system has changed.
I'm using KDE 4.5.2 version 9 and been using it since it was released in the KDE stable repo. My system is openSUSE 11.3 upgraded from 11.2 32 bit. I don't have any other non standard repositories except for the KDE stable repo.

Presuming ubuntu was dual-booting alongside windows with GRUB, and I formatted the ubuntu partition, what would happen at startup; would I still be able to access windows, and would the option to boot ubuntu just disappear?

I deleted my hd from an ubuntu 10.10 liveCD system by trying to create a new partition table with gparted. I just wanted to restore the partition table and clicked on "create partition table"apply.Now the hole hd is an unallocated file system, so without any partitions. There had been 3 ext4 partitions.
Because I did it from an liveCD, all data should be save? Is there a way to search for partitions on the hard disk and get a new old partition table and write it to the mbr?I searched a lot already (with a very slow mobile internet connection)..

I have a HP DV9000 laptop. The second hard drive bay doesn't support SATA II devices. I was cloning the original hard drive to the newer SATA II hard drive I purchased two swap them because bay 1 does support SATA II devices. I decided to use
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
to get the job done. I double/triple checked my command with fdisk -l, but my dyslexia got the better of me. I should have ran
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sda
....
I stopped the command about 1/2 hour in, it is a 160GB hdd. I tried using foremost to recover all of the files that hadn't been written over yet, but it can't recover Quicken filetypes. The ONLY thing I need off of this drive is the Quicken database. TL;DR I need to recover a quicken database file off my corrupted partition. What program can I use?

I just tried installing Fedora 12 and at the beggining of the install i got this message about my disk which cannot be read until it is initialized, and if i initialize it all data on the disk will be lost. Disk was formated using GUID, and had one HFS+ partition on it. I accidentaly clicked "yes" on that error message, and after realising what I just did (some 2sec later) i pulled out my computer's power cord out.
Now my entire disk is erased, it has no partitions on it, and all data is lost...
How do i retrieve my data from the erased disk, and why did Fedora want to do this to my disk?

In what started as a quest to get free wifi, I have recently gotten in way over my head. After unsuccesfully trying to use a virtual drive, I decided to erase my HDD on my laptop completely, wiping out my Windows XP and installed Backtrack 4 in it's place.
My goal amongst others, was to create a 20% partition for Backtrack and run XP on the rest of it. Well, I couldn't figure out how to do it. My only option was format and install backtrack.
So now I'm typing on my iPhone cuz I know absolutely nothing about Linux or how it works. My computer has no Internet. It doesn't recognize my Ethernet NIC, my wireless card and probably alot of other stuff.
SO ANYWAYS I don't want to give up. I'm ready to learn. I guess the first order of business is to get my Ethernet Card working so I don't have to type on this damn phone. So how do I do it?
Here is the hardware list:

I have just followed the instructions here: Upgrade/Supported - openSUSE to upgrade from version 11.1 to 11.2. When it was upgrading the system, by using: It had problems with a couple of rpms (one oppenofice extras and the other i cant remember). I went away for a moment and when i returned the computer was blocked. I whaited to no avail. I pushed the power button and turned of the PC. I started it again, and in the boot menu it still said version 11.1, but the background was not that of 11.1, but that of 11.2. I booted but did not started X windows, worse still my /home/ directory is empty!

I am operating Debian 5.0 kernel 2.26. In trying to clean up (I believe I was using a root terminal), I erased the directory /home/root. Since I have done that, I can not get to a root terminal, can not use synapse and a host of other administrative processed.
Now, when I boot the system, I can log in as a user (my version of Debian does not allow me to login as the administrator). Then, logged in as the user, I previously could select for example 'synapse', I would be given a screen to enter the Administrator password and then get synapse. Now, I am given the screen to enter the Administrator password, but once I enter it, I do not get synapse. I do get an error message
'can not find /home/root/.synapse' And of course, I erased the /home/root directory. Now I might just mkdir /home/root - except to do that I need a root terminal and I can not get that either - probably for the same reason.
I have tried using the boot disk and going to the rescue mode - except for some reason I can not mount a root directory. I believe it is because I am using LVM2 and my root directory must be in an LVM volume, but I can not figure out how to get to that using the rescue mode.

Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0
I saved a page from Linuxquestions. It was saved under a filename beginning with '[' (left square bracket). And I now can't delete the file. Unfortunately I cannot send you a screenshot because opening a terminal in the GUI makes ls behave differently. I shall try to describe, assuming the file is in dir '.'. Also let '[SOLVED]foo.html' be the file in question:
Code:
$ ls
<the file is listed>
$ ls [*
/bin/ls: cannot access [*: No such file or directory
$
If I want the hdd to get rid of this file, what should I do? Any hint will be welcome.

I currently dual boot windows XP Pro with Ubuntu 9.10. I made a mistake last night playing with gparted and lost my E drive, which had all of my music, games and movies plus is where my Ubuntu install was. I then ended up reformatting the drive with windows and reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10.My question is how can I put my windows files on my E drive without going through the hassle of reinstalling windows.
I have a 20g IDE drive where my windows install is, windows and Ubuntu both tell me this drive is failing, (I have used it for booting since 2002, so I am not that concerned with it), another 40g IDE drive for more storage and a 160g SATA drive where Ubuntu is again installed. I want the SATA drive to be my main boot drive now, so how can I clone my windows boot to the other drive. I tried gparted but could not figure it out. I have gparted burnt to cd, booted with it and just don't understand how to use it.Also, if I clone this boot drive to the SATA drive, do I need to change jumper settings on my 40g to master when I take out the 20g drive.20g master and 40g slave on first IDE channel and 2 CD devices on second IDE channel and SATA drive on first SATA connection. I read somewhere that it is better to keep the cd devices on another channel than the disk drives.

They have pictures and documents everywhere so I figured I would just backup their entire HDD onto my external one and let them go in and transfer them back off. I keep proper backups so this isn't how I normally do things. I have done similar things in the past with dieing HDD's and Knoppix but I have never had this issue. I burned a CD using the latest ISO and Ubuntu seen both the main HDD and my external. I just copied all the contents of the main HDD over to the external. All went well and I could browse and view all the files from the external HDD after the transfer using the live CD. Unfortunately I am having an issue seeing the external HDD in Windows. As soon as I hook the drive up - windows says I need to Format it(Which I won't do obviously). But if I boot the live CD I can still see and use the files. How do can I get windows to see the drive and files without destroying data?

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have
Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)
I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
Partition table entries are not in disk order.

I copied some large files onto a fat32 usb key in windows, once in ubuntu i then moved these files into some other folders on the usb key. Now when I look at the usb key on windows again, the folder i created and moved them to exists, but it is empty!?The odd thing is, the key reports that 6.5gb of the usb key is in use, but windows is only finding about 1-2gb of the files.

I have a set of seven CDs with a video course on them but each CD is run via a Windows .exe file. How can I run a .exe file? Apparently this .exe file kicks off the course somehow. I'm actually surprised it's not a .avi file or some other kind of video file but such is life.
