Software :: GUI Dialog Box With Embedded Terminal Window?

Jun 22, 2011

I've been doing some work with BASH over the past few months, building scripts and config files, and quite happy with BASH for the purpose of building and installing distros and packages.

Now though, I'd like to go a little further than gTerm, and have a terminal window within a dialog box so I can click on buttons and set config parameters with a mouse, and watch the progress and send status messages from the script running in BASH in the terminal window back to the dialog box.

Quite a few GUI packages seem to offer the choice to open a terminal window to watch the progress. I am probably working in reverse, in wanting a terminal window to open a containing dialog box, but I'm sure it can be done if I want to go back and adapt my old MS-DOS 286 C skills to Linux.

What I'd prefer is a quick and easy way: to just find a tool like whiptail or zenity or dialog, setup a couple of buttons and a message / progress bar, and dump my BASH script terminal output into a window inside the dialog box.

Can anybody suggest offhand which of these mentioned dialog packages (ie. whiptail dialog zenity) or any others, provide an option to open a terminal window inside a dialog box? Then pass fairly simple variables between the two?

General :: Create A Menu Box Window Using Dialog In Shell Scripting

Feb 3, 2010

I am using Linux on my system. I don't have gui for my system, only console is there.

I have some task to create a menu box window using dialog in shell scripting.

I have to take input from user & save it in a file.

But this should like html form as e.g.

Name - .....................
email id - ..................
phone - ......................
location - ...................

Submit Cancel

Such window should be displayed on console using dialog & then user will enter his information there as Name,email id, phone,etc & submit it, then it gets saved to a file. Here submit & cancle are buttons. I have to do it in bash shell scripting. Or give me some examples like the above with shell script code.

Ubuntu :: 'set' Command In Terminal Has Shell Scripts Embedded Inside?

May 3, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 for some development. I was trying to set some environment variables are noticed that when I hit 'set' inside a terminal (to dump environment vars) I get the usual first few variables but then I see a whole lot of script code ....

Code:

WINDOWID=23068675
XAUTHORITY=/var/run/gdm/auth-for-sid-5IDovs/database
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-gnome:/etc/xdg
XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/gnome:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/

[code]....

I've installed a lot of tools (NetBeans, Ruby, Java, build-essentials etc) but essentially I installed Ubuntu today - so it shouldn't have rotted out this quickly. is this hijacking of environment vars to embed script code intentional with Ubuntu 10.04?

But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Software :: When Start Xemacs Is Doesnot Run In An X Window But Runs In A Terminal Window

Feb 7, 2010

Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.

Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

My env show:

Code:

The Xemacs install on Debian ( Bug written ) Install and configuration of Xemacs from source. A better understanding of the Debian upgrade process.

Debian Multimedia :: Xcompmgr 'master' - Rounded Window Borders Don't Draw And Redraw Properly When Using The Terminal (gnome-terminal And The LXDE And Xfce Ones)

Aug 26, 2011

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.

Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

Ubuntu :: Losing Terminal And Other Window Text?

Mar 21, 2010

I don't quite know how to put this problem - recently, my installation has started losing the text in terminal and other windows. I will open a terminal window, and there's nothing there - no cursor, no background. After this occurs, I try to restart the system - the 'Restart" window appears, and is also blank. Hitting enter at this point blanks the entire screen to black, after which the only recourse is to power-down and restart. Of course, then I need to run the recovery mode and fsck to get the system back up.

The first time this happened, I had to rebuild the kernel to recover. Luckily, i lost no data, but this is making the system unusable. I need a stable system to finish the project I am developing for an embedded Linux system.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10, with the latest updates.
