General :: GRUB Boot Menu Disapeared After NTFS Partition Deleted?

I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Fedora12. Following is the partition structure of my harddisk.
Disk /dev/sda: 80.1 GB, 80060424192 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9733 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

I deleted the "/dev/sda8" through Windows Disk Management, and when i restarted the system. GRUB boot menu vanished and a GRUB console appeared. Then I booted my system using Fedora12 live USB and created a new partition at same place from where i deleted it, and then after restart my started working normally as it was before partition deletion.
But, I don't understand what actually happened. Can anyone tell me in detail what happened and why and what to do to avoid such things in future?

The XP partition ceased to boot (in fact when it seems to start Windows, it re-boots once and again). I can access the XP partition from Ubuntu 9.10
If I boot with the WXP CD and reinstall it in the original NTFS partition, will it wipe the boot menu out, loosing any chance to boot in Linux?

I have just updated my Ubuntu linux to Ubuntu 10.4, not my grub menu isnt letting me boot to Windows Partition.The problem seems to be with grubs new update from using an editable menu.lst file to using a non editable grub.cfg file. Everywhere I look it states "DO NOT EDIT THE GRUB.CGF FILE". I am at a loss as what to do. I figured that the new configuration has screwed up the Windows Boot File. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this. I am not sure if it is a windows issue or an issue with the Grub boot menu.

I set up my Dell Inspiron Laptop as Dual Boot -> Xp / Ubuntu 10.04. - all worked well. I had 2 installations of XP on this machine and I removed one - all worked well. I then went into XP and deleted the partion (4) that the old XP had resided on (using Easeus Partition Master) All NOT working well !! I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)
I cannot get to a command prompt.

Since last last week i've installed Windows 7 and OpenSuSe 11.2 linux several time in my laptop. Each time i do something and Linux boot menu disappears and i again install both operating system. I have installed linux for the first time 6 days before in my life.
I am trying to live without windows. I know i can't for more few months as there is problem in every step for me.
Now i have both os running perfectly and boot menu appearing perfectly.
There are 3 partitions in FAT32 created while installing linux for Windows files. Now i want to change it in to NTFS. All drive are empty.
##1 Is it ok if i reformat it in windows 7 and change to NTFS?
##2 Does it creates problem in GRUB boot menu?
##3 Is there any way to do this from Linux without any problem?
##4 Is there any way to change FAT32 into NTFS without affecting GRUB?
I'm tired by installing again and again. I don't want any more trouble for next 1 month.

I had to delete all my Windows partitions. I am making new NTFS partitions as I write (thanks to the Live CD). I have not deleted any of the Linux partitions But as a result of the deletion, I cant boot into Ubuntu 10.04. I dont wish to reinstall it because I had lots of packages, settings and scripts in my home directory. I tried getting back on track by using the sudo grub commands, but it could find grub. So I am stuck. Any help, please?

I want to automatic mount a ntfs partition after start. I work on fstab, everything seems to be ok, but now something strange is happening: sometimes after boot, when I use fdisk, I find all the partitions as sda, sometims they seems to appear as sdb. Of course, if in fstab I have written sda and they are sdb, they will not be aoutomount... I am using fedora 14 I was expecting that allways the partitions to be sda or sdb.

I have ubuntu in sda7. sda6 had bt4, sda3 had Win7. From Win7 I removed sda6. Now when I start my computer I get grub rescue. How can I tell grub that ubuntu in sda6 and not in sda7 anymore or how can I create sda6 again so ubuntu goes sda7.

2)open terminal(in live command will work or not ,i typed but its asking you should be root)

3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.
I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?

I having a problem getting my grub loader to see one of my hard drives. I added a drive, and my grub loader lost track of where everything was. I couldn't get my old linux (Red Hat 9) so I installed SuSe on my new hard drive. But I need my be able to boot from my old hard drive because it has apps that only run on the earlier version. From /proc/partitions the old hard drive is sdd

Deleted the Ubuntu partition by accident. Now at a loss as how to get Windows working again. I had all my files saved, and did a full format and reinstall to Windows. Thinking that it would just overwrite grub but this thing is like a virus.. I cant do **** at the grub rescure command prompt... it just sits there with a cursor... Even stuff like reboot and quit or exit don't even work... what the hell? So I pop my Win7 install cd in and I find that for some reason I have no recovery console... just the option to install. I install but no grub, the little virus is still there and I just wasted an hour of my life while Win7 installed again because I still cant view it.
I deleted all the partitions and wiped the entire disc and grub is still there.. I was thinking that Windows would just replace grub automatically. Heh the Bootsector always seems to get owned on Windows and I expected grub to be just as useless but in it's own way, it's worse.

Recently I reinstall Grub, but I have chosen on ntfs (windows 7 partition E: drive). After this I chosen /dev/sda which is correct boot partition.
Now Fedora 10 and Win 7 booth are working properly.
How can I get back my E: drive safely?
In Fedora 10 E: is not available, where as in Win7 it is available but asking for Format.

change the boot menu - GRUB
I regularly update my ubuntu (10.04), and new minor versions keep accumulating on the GRUB screen. Right now I have 5 different versions listed on the GRUB, even though I always select the latest version to work with.
Am I supposed to do anything to get rid of the old version references? Do these old versions affect disk space/performance?

I had debian squeeze already installed, then installed win 7. Windows overwrote by MBR, as I expected it to, so I used an ubuntu live cd to reinstall grub2 to debian root.
I rebooted, and sure enough I had grub back. The boot menu has debian on it. Just debian (crunchbang actually, but its the same thing).
So I added a script in /etc/grub.d (called Windows_11) to create a windows chainloader entry in grub.cfg, and ran update-grub.
Update-grub picks up my /etc/grub.d/Windows_11 script, and adds an appropriate chainloader entry to /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
So I would expect this new chainloader entry to show up in my boot menu when I boot up. But it doesn't; on booting I only have the option to select debian.

i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

I had a win7 installed on my system first. Then I installed Ubuntu and added grub2 boot option with win7 utility program EasyBSD. But then I accidently deleted win7 boot option from windows loader menu. Now I can only chose to load Ubuntu. How can I restore Win7 loading option? I have Win7 option in grub2 but it returns me to the previous screen, from which I have deleted win7.

I hav two 40 GB hard disks.RHEL5 is installed on 1st and Windows on 2nd. In order to use each OS I manually hav to go and change the "first boot device" option in BIOS setting and boot into required OS. In order for me to get started with Linux, I downloaded & installed Virtualbox (V3.2.10) on my WinXP machine, and downloaded the Puppy Linux image from as per[URL].. When I start up the VM, I get a GRUB menu allowing me to boot

I have a problem with my GRUB bootloader. I have Ubuntu 9.10 and Win XP installed on my laptop. But only the list of Ubuntu appears in the menu and NOT win XP.
Some instructions say try to edit the "menu.lst" file in "/boot/grub/" menu.
But there is no such a file in my /boot/grub/" folder.

How I have achieved this: Upgraded (in fact installed on the same partition without reformatting) W7 32 (RC-7100) to W7 64 enterprise. It has nuked grub (used to boot FC-12) and silently removed a small boot (or windows backup) partition so ntfs became sda3 instead of sda4. Booting from fedora dvd causes the sequence listed above.
The main problem here is that grub doesn't boot windows: there was "unknown filesystem" error. After fixing boot record with "testdisk" I get: "booting windows in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... booting windows in 3 ... 2.. forever" If I use W7 repair disk it fixes windows and nukes grub away (ntfs partition has to be active for that otherwise the smart soft can't find it). So, making sda1 active and placing grub there is not an option...

I'm running a dual-boot with linux mint and Windows. I have an E-machines desktop with : 760 GB Hard Drive 6GB RAM NVidia GeForce Graphics card 6150se Integrated AMD Athalon II X2 235e dual-core processor My problem is getting my grub to boot into Linux Mint, and the problem may lie with my graphics card. Whenever I install the linux mint for the first time, I am prompted to activate my proprietary NVidia graphics driver, which I do. Then I am asked to reboot.
Upon reboot, the system gets to the grub menu, accepts my selection to boot linux mint, then the "progress dots" appear on the screen. After about 8 seconds, the screen switches into command prompt mode. I never get to the graphical sign-on screen. All I get is the console sign-on prompts. From there my only option seems to be to reboot. (sudu reboot). After which, of course, I am forced to go into Windows vs. Linux to avoid the problem. Once Windows has loaded up, I do a restart and go back into Linux Mint . Finally, I get to the Linux sign-on graphical screen.
To summarize, i cannot restart linux mint without getting stuck staring at a console screen. I can get back into linux mint if i use the command 'sudo reboot', and, from the grub menu, choosing to go into Windows. From Windows, I then do a restart and end up back at the grub screen again, but this time when I select linux mint, things work and I am given the sign-on gui.
If I choose to not install the graphics driver (and put up with the annoying reminder to activate one), the system dual boots without a problem.
