Fedora :: Creating A Bootloader CD To Boot Machine?

About a month ago I decided that I would try and revive my long dead PC which, when the original hard drive failed, took out an IDE channel, leaving me with only one. The machine was built back in 2001 (maybe a month or so after XP came out) and is suffering from its age.I was able to install Fedora 12 to its hard drive by putting it into a USB hard drive cage.
You'd think I could just put the hard drive back in the machine and have everything work right? If only. The BIOS is unable to recognize the, for lack of a better term, bootability of the hard drive (it does recognize it, and I have checked the BIOS settings to make sure that it is the primary boot device). I have a reiser card in the machine and I was wondering if it is possible to create a portable bootloader cd that will just boot to the first partition of the hard drive (The reiser card is recognized and it USED to be able to boot directly to it from my BIOS, but no such luck now)
I want to make my machine to PXE boot windows from another machine having RHEL5.2. I know the procedure to PXE boot linux, but I want to know is it possible to PXE boot your client machine with windows XP.
I am getting a new computer with Windows 7 installed. It will contain a second hard disk on which I will install Fedora Linux. I plan to put grub in the /boot partition of that disk,so I won't be able to boot Linux directly to start. I plan to use the Windows 7 bootloader to dual boot, and I understand in principle how this is done. I set up a previous computer which was running Vista this way, using the program Easy BCD which simplified setting up the Vista bootloader. But the Easy BCD website doesn't address the question of what to do with Windows 7.
In the end, I am trying to dual boot my MacBook Pro with Fedora 14 and OSX. I am having issues getting the bootloader working for Fedora though. I have setup my partition table like this:
Fedora installs fine, and the bootloader installs to sda3. I use rEFIt to allow me to boot to my Linux partition, but when I do I get "no bootable device". I have done a little reading and have found people have problems doing with this with GRUB (default Fedora bootloader). So what I would like to do is try installing LILO or maybe even GRUB2. how to change the bootloader Fedora installs from the Live CD?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP installed on my laptop. Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr).Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:

I need some help creating a triple boot system, I have already installed XP and W7, now I am installing Fedora 12 (this is for work so unfortunately it has to be like that). Now the problem is that I want it to show all the partitions in GRUB. Right now it works by going to GRUB first, when selecting Windows it jumps to the Win7 boot manager.
I tried to have them all in one but it seems like the addresses I used in GRUB did not work cause it keeps directing me to the Win7 BM. BTW I am using a single drive with 3 different logical partitions.
I'm having some trouble creating a VM of Ubuntu 10.04. I've downloaded the ISO. I've created a new VM using the VM Assistant. I selected "Use operating system installation disc image file" and chosen the ISO. When I run the VM, it sits at the following screen:
I run a number of distros. I often ssh into the machine. However depending on which distro I am using, the RSA key is different.So what I will do is delete ~/.ssh/known_hosts on the machine I am using and ssh in. what i was wondering is whether using ssh-keygen and creating the same passphrase for the distros would remove this problem?
I was thinking to install a very basic SSH gate, secured over SSL, like this [URL] using PHP. However I would like to have it very basic and simple to install. (not database SQL, nor complicated things, ...) so that I get a prompt page with login and password to access the SSH-internet, and then can SSH the linux box over SSL and regular port 80 like they do. passwd would be in a txt file or whatever. You use index.htm and no one can scroll the tree of the directory. Would have someone already embedded php code for that?
I crated unallocated space on vista disk using EASEUS partitioning software and installed ubuntu on it. I chose "use the largest free space" for ubuntu installation. Installation goes fine but only vista loads on restart...where is the installed ubuntu?
I've installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit on an external WD 500GB HDD. I went through the installation setup, and formatted the external HDD normally. (100M /boot, 250GB /, 248GB /tmp , 2.8GB swap). I also installed grub in the external HDD's MBR. After installation, I could boot up Linux on the same platform (Arrandale). However, as soon as I took it to a different platform such as Atom Pineview D525, it had all kind of problem on Grub, such as Grub Hard Disk Error, or it just hanged on grub loading stage {1.5,2}. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I would get to grub command prompt, but rarely I could boot up. I would stuck at mounting file system.
I've searching a lot on Google, and people suggested to reinstall Grub, so I tried various method to reinstall Grub, but the same behaviors still exist. I can't guarantee the drive will boot...
I'm trying to reinstall FC10 after a foolish mistake I've done that costed me operation of my Fedora partition (uninstalling SELinuxpolicycoreutils).
I have a dual boot Ubuntu - FC 10 machine and delete my old fedora partition with GParted. However when I try to install FC 10 from the live CD using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout" I get the error message:

My last option is erase everything from my drive including the Ubuntu partition and start over the installation, something that I would like to avoid.
Need help on a activating xDSL Connection on machine startup, i have configured the internet through it but every time when machine boots up...it is annoying to activate this interface manually. do guide on this....i am using Fedora core 12...and can you help on the firefox's "work offline" bottle neck.
i have a desktop that had had vista on it forever and i decided to install ubuntu on the 10gigs i had free for the longest time so i installed ubuntu but i did a stupid thing in my opinion and installed grubboot loader on the windows partition now when i try to boot vista it takes me back to the bootloader and i need to be able to use both vista(grphicswork) and ubuntu(networking) i cannot loose my vista files by re installing vista
I just received a service pack update for Windows 7, and now when I boot Windows 7, it continuously restarts telling me its for the update. Is it possible that I have two boot loaders in the MBR? And if i do how can i delete the bootloader for windows 7?
I want to have LinuxMint, Fedora and OpenSUSE installed alongside Windows 7, and have the option to choose which one to boot from some sort of bootloaderow can I set up a bootloader (let's say, grub, or the windows bootloader) to be able to correctly boot all 4 OSs? And imagine I add Slackware to another partition, will I be able to easily add Slackware to the bootloader
I'm trying to install opensuse 11.4 but I got this error:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entierly below 128 gb. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24(result is error 18 during install grub MBR)"
What should I do before click next step to install? I installed opensuse with this error and some times opensuse can boot and some not. At least I was able to boot safemode.
I currently dual-boot XP and Debian sid. I currently have XP on /dev/sda1, sid on /dev/sda2 with /home mounted separately on /dev/sa3, swap is /dev/sda4. I have free space in both sa3 and 4, mostly in 4, of course. What I'd like to do is add a third partition, either with or without a separate home mount, but have my current grub2 still be the bootloader. I'm thinking I'll give a total of 33 G to it (I keep almost nothing on my hard drive, it's all on the cloud). I want to install Kubuntu and try it out, I've burnt the Live CD and it's very cool.
I just want to ask if there is a way to make grub bootloader automatically boot to ubuntu every start up. And only make the bootloader appear when I press a certain key(ie. F7) so that I can boot to windows when I do not want to boot on Ubuntu.
I just tried to install OpenSUSE 11.3 on sda4 which is approximately the 2nd half of a 1TB drive, with a pre-existing Win7 installation on the 1st half. The installation summary (before it made any changes) told me "The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128GB. The system might not boot." Naturally, not keen on having a computer that won't boot, I aborted the installation.
Of course it's not below 128GB -- Windows is there.
Is there a workaround that is straightforward enough for someone who has very limited experience with GNU/Linux and isn't a comp-sci student?
I have windows xp on my first hard drive and Linux on the second hard drive.The windows hard drive is labeled hda1 and the linux hard drive is labeled hdb1.I am using GRUB to boot the linux hard drive and it is installed on hdb.Is there any way to boot the secondary linux hard drive using the windows bootloader?I have tried several online tutorials for it but none of them work.
I have a Fedora 11 PC, which I want to connect to the ldap server at my organisation. When my /etc/ldap.conf file is in place, the machine will not boot past "starting system messagebus" and just hangs there. I have to press the reset button, and boot it into single user mode, and remove /etc/ldap.conf, and only then will it boot. The ldap.conf file is fine, I think, because if you boot the machine up without ldap.conf, then log in.
I can put ldap.conf in place and immediately I can see all the user accounts etc. from the ldap server. If I then reboot, with ldap.conf in place, it hangs on boot again. I found a bug report for FC5 which stated this problem, but there was no solution. There was a workaround, making messagebus starting later in the boot process (move it from S22 to S27 in rc3/5.d), but that didn't help in my case.
My ldap.conf contains this (I've removed my actual ldap info): host my.server.ip.addr base dc=my,dc=dn uri ldap://ldap.mydomain.com ssl no tls_cacertdir /etc/openldap/cacerts pam_password md5 bind_policy soft
As I say, I think the ldap config is fine, because you can start it manually once the machine has booted up without an ldap.conf in place. I lifted it from a Centos client, which works fine and doesn't have the same problem with booting that Fedora does.
I am trying to dual boot Fedora 13 onto my Windows 7 machine. I have shrunk my Windows drive to create 100GB of unpartitioned space, but when trying to install Fedora onto this free space (it is recognized as "Free" space), the installer tells me that there is no space for the partition.
I have a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 64bit preinstalled. The processor is core i5 and the machine has 4GB RAM. I freed 25GB of memory from my Hard disk and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 (AMD). Everything went fine. I restarted and Logged into Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. Then I restarted to Windows7. This also worked well as expected.
But, when I rebooted again, I got a black screen saying that �No modules found. Press any key to restart� When I press a key, it says �No operating system found�, probably after checking through a network (it printed lines starting with PXE).
I tried exactly in the same way with Ubuntu 8.04 in my machine, and this worked without any problem. The Bootloader was not corrupted after restarting from Windows. I noticed the problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. I feel like a problem regarding the bootloader version. AFAIK, 9.10 and 10.04 is using GRUB2 when 8.04 use the old version of GRUB. Will I have to switch to the legacy GRUB? (I would love to keep using GRUB2). If yes, I would like to know How.
I have recently purchased a new laptop, which came with Windows 7 pre-installed. I immediately installed Ubuntu alongside it with a dual boot. At first it worked fine, but when I restarted after the first time I used Windows, I ended up with an 'Operating system not found' error. I was able to reinstall the Grub bootloader using an Ubuntu Live CD, which appeared to fix the problem, but the next time I loaded Windows 7 and rebooted, the problem reappeared I think the problem is that Windows 7, for whatever reason, is somehow removing or disabling Grub.
Im finally deleting vista from my disk, but as I am game addict I will re-install it afterwards just for games. Now I assume that will overwrite GRUB, so how do I restore boot record and at same time keep my grub config?
