Fedora :: Can't Open Pdf Files In Firefox With Mozplugger

Nov 29, 2010

A couple of days ago mozplugger just stopped working on me, at least for pdf files. I can't open them. When I click on a pdf file, firefox seems to be loading it, but then I get back to the same page and nothing happens. The acrobat plugin works fine, but of course I wouldn't want to use it...

Ubuntu Networking :: Nfs Locking Files - Cannot Open For Editing, Or Open Firefox / Thunderbird?

Dec 12, 2010

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:

"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:

Unknown User

Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)

Ubuntu :: Firefox Won't Open Local Files Normally

Apr 5, 2011

I'm running Firefox within YLMF 3.0 (a distro of Linux with Ubuntu 10.04).

When I go into "Help,About", it says ...
version 3.6.3
Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu
canonical - 1.0

While I'm in Firefox, when I try to open a local file (a "local file" meaning an HTM or image file stored on my computer as opposed to remotely through the internet) by going into the File menu and selectng Open (or by doing "Ctrl/O" from the keyboard), I get a dialog box prompting me to navigate to the file. When I navigate to the file and click on Open, the dialog box vanishes and nothing more happens. (The webpage that was already displayed is still there).

However, if I type the URL representing the local file into the address bar (for example, if I have a file called "homepage.htm" and it resides on the path "/home/user/html/", and I type "file:///home/user/html/homepage.htm"), it works and the file gets opened and displayed.

Also, if I'm not already in Firefox but instead go into the File Manager and navigate to the filename, then right-click on the filename, then choose "Open with", then choose "Firefox", Firefox will then be invoked with that file loaded in it.

But why can't I open the file the normal way from within Firefox by using "File,Open" (or "Ctrl/O" from the keyboard)?

Ubuntu :: Chromium - Firefox Wouid Readily Open Pdf Files Within The Browser Window Itself

Aug 8, 2010

After finding firefox too slow, i recently shifted full time to chromium. and now i know why it has such a fan following ! its seriously fast, especially as compared to firefox - which at least in my case would appear to have got bogged down because of numerous add-ons etc.

However, there are 2 things that disturb the basic functional of chromium.

- Whenever i click on the browser icon, the window that opens up is never in "maximized" size. so every time i need to double click on the title border to maximize the window. is there some way in which the browser window will open in maximized mode the first time i click the icon ?

- Firefox wouid readily open pdf files within the browser window itself. however, chromium asks me to first save the file at some location, and then only can i open it !

Ubuntu :: Firefox - Open Pdf Files - Doesn't Record Settings About Preferred Applications

Jul 28, 2011

lately I'm experiencing a few issues with Firefox 5.0 on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. First of all, when I try to open pdf files, I often get a black page and I've to try to reload it many times before I can effectively read the pdf (even for small-size ones).

Secondly Firefox doesn't record settings about my preferred applications. If, for example, I want a file .torrent to be opened by deluge I have to enter manually /usr/bin/deluge because by default it would be opened by gedit. No matter if I select "use as default application" the next time the issue will be present again.

Fedora :: Firefox Doesn't Open Full Screen?

Sep 7, 2009

I've had this happen so often in the past, that I'm ready to ditch firefox altogether. I'm running F10 on a 3Ghz Intel dual core processor with a 500gb hdd. l prefer that my browser start up with a full screen when I launch it and firefox has been doing this just fine for the past 8 months. When I fired up firefox (version 3.0.13) this morning, it started up using only half the screen. As I've mentioned this has happened to me in the past and I've never been able to figure out how to get FF back to starting with a full screen. Does anyone know how to make it default back to opening in full screen mode? I've attached an image of how FF is opening now.

Fedora :: Open Firefox - Get Really Strange HTTP And HTTPS Connections Showing Up In Firestarter

Oct 22, 2009

I've noticed that when I open firefox I get really strange HTTP and HTTPS connections showing up in firestarter (which as I understand it is just a GUI for IPtables). They connect to various bits of a site listed as 1e100.net (when you use "lookup hostnames") such as wy-in-f18.1e100.net, they stay connected all the time as far as I can see unless I close firefox. I've heard people say they are connected to Google, but I can close all tabs after loging out of google and still see them... it's very odd.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To FC12 - Access Port 631 Through Firefox Wouldn't Open

Feb 8, 2010

I only began using Linux with the release of FC8. I've upgraded into every new version (upgrade, no clean installs), after the new versions had been out a while. I struggle with command lines, updates, cups and other very cool tools that are only difficult because they have so many options. I'm Windows guy at work, a system admin and db administrator, plus the company expert on Excel. But, all in all, I hate Windows, and I'm loving Fedora, even if I struggle.

This last upgrade really kicked me in the pants. The first thing I noticed was all of my software sources were gone. I did some research around the forum and tried a few things, but it's still not working. Unfortunately, I may have uninstalled Yum in the process, but not rpm. I've tried to re-install the yum packages, but still no luck.

This morning before leaving for work I noticed that a boot log indicated that cups had failed. I went in to restart the service (through gui) and it said it was running. So I stopped the service and re-started. I tried to access port 631 through Firefox and it wouldn't open. I need to check the firewall to see if it's an open port, but beyond that I don't know.

Now I'm wondering if I should just do a clean install. I haven't done this, mainly because I didn't want to hassle with setting up my printer again (although, it's a Brother and they have the drivers and good instructions), and I didn't want to lose any emails that I've received via Thunderbird. The printer is really a non-issue now, as I'll have to set it up anyway. I have a backup of the /usr folder and all the documents. Question is, if I restore the Thunderbird folder after a clean install, would it bring back my email?

Fedora :: Can't Open The Filesystem To Explore Files And View?

Jan 14, 2010

I have a crippled file system after a disk failure and attempt at repairing. Currently the Web Server is running, however I cannot open the filesystem to explore files and view. I am going to do a fresh install this weekend and upgrade system. I have two questions I hope this forum will help with. (Installing new disk and entire server)

1). Can someone tell me how I could copy the http.config file so that I can view my settings from terminal (This took me forever to get right for my environment to get shtml and cgi files to run correctly and I don't wish to lose). I am running Fedora 8, I'm also not sure of the location. (I'm fairly new to linux and not great with the terminal, however that is the only access working.) It would be great if someone added the terminal commands. If I can copy them I could email to my email address.

2). In the past when I have copied web files (web sites) over to the www directory the permission would be incorrect. Is it possible to write some of the web sites to CD (Disk burner is working) and then copy to the new system with permissions correct? Would you give a little how to all web sites are in the www directy. I think that is etc/www/"webdomain name" One thing I might add is all drives will fail it is just when...

Fedora :: Disappearing Files - Open A Folder And It's Empty ?

Dec 27, 2010

I've using RedHat/Fedora for years now, and every now and then I encounter the following situation :

I open a folder and it's empty. The folder was containing files and I'm 100% sure I didn't deleted them myself. Each time the folder is deep inside the hierarchy and is among other untouched folders. Sometimes it's a folder I never use, sometimes it's a folder I use almost everyday. The missing content is not large (a few regular files).

I'm currently running F13 but I've seen this behavior before on previous versions. This is kind of scary all my work is there and my backups are also done on a a linux backup server.

I'm puzzled, I cannot see any specificities to these folders, I had no crash or cold reboot, nothing I see can explain that. Could it be related to ext3?
