Fedora :: Open Jpeg Files With Gimp 2.6?
Dec 29, 2010
I'm trying to open jpeg attachments in Thunderbird in Fedora 13, by choosing Gimp 2.6. I browse to Gimp in /etc and there are a number of files in the folder.
Could you please help with the correct path to Gimp to open the attachment jpegs as I am unable to open them at present.

Somewhere along the line I have managed to get the below error when loading a jpeg in the gimp (either with 'open with' on context menu or directly)Running as an unprivileged user
Code:
Calling error for procedure 'file-jpeg-load':
Procedure 'file-jpeg-load' not found
Opening '/home/fortyfourgalena/Desktop/photos/liza/inkosanalodge_20061201/20061201_171151_PC010620.jpg' failed: Procedure 'file-jpeg-load' not found
[code]...
This happens on a system running 10.04 / 64-bit. As I seem to recall a recent gimp update (might be wrong), I checked a 32-bit 10.04 laptop and it does not show the behavior. For information: the 64-bit system has some additional stuff installed for image processing (ufraw and darktable) but I have been using this already for a while without issues. The other main change on this 64-bit system before I noticed the problem was the installation of a geforce 8400 video card including the 'nomodeset' option in grub and install of the latest driver from the nvidia website. verify that the gimp on a 64-bit system is still functioning.Further a 'repair' from within synaptic throws the following error
Code:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gimp_2.6.8-2ubuntu1.2_amd64.deb: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2
Note: I found some messages regarding this problem on the web but they were referring to older kernels (2.6.8); and people reverted back to an even older kernel. And yes, there have been a recent kernel upgrade.

Having trouble handling JPEG-2000 files. Message says I need some plugin. I've checked in Synaptic and there are a couple of packages installed by default that mention JPEG 2000 but obviously I need something else. Any ideas?

king for a program or command line tool that ease the process of reducing size of many .jpeg files at once.I've been doing this with gimp manually by reducing jpeg quality and it's painful for 10 or 15 files to do that

I am using the following command to create a video of a bunch of jpeg files. The problem is that some of the jpegs are portrait and others are landscape. Ffmpeg is stretching the portrait images. Is it possible to maintain aspect ratio of the jpegs... perhaps put black bars on the portrait images using ffmpeg?
ffmpeg -r .75 -f image2 -i Image%d.jpg output.mp4

That's basically all I know. I run a KDE desktop and have not recently upgraded. However, for some odd reason, Gimp just won't come up. I see the bouncy Gimp icon next to my cursor and I see a task manager icon at the bottom of my screen but after about 15 seconds, the icon leaves and nothing ever happens. I am a web designer and Gimp is a must have! I'm sorry I don't really have any more details for you - that's all I know. Is there something that I could look for that may be messing up Gimp?

most canon selphy printers does not work under linux, but i think its possible to send files to a selphy printer via bluetooth. and after recieving the file, it instantly prints the image. my question is, is there a way to send files from a pc to selphy via usb instead of bluetooth. i believe you can use obexftp to send files from pc->selphy and it will instantly print, the problem with this approach is that it takes a lot of time to send the file. if there is a way to use a cable to transfer the files then we could print directly. or is there a cable that somewhat simulates how bluetooth transfers.

I can't open any files such as .png's or .jpg's in gimp. How can I change this. I installed it via pacman. I don't know if this helps, but I'm running kde with arch. I'm guessing I need to add the path of libpng to the plugins section. What should I do?

I installed evince on my Arch Linux system as a PDF reader, and everything was fine for a while. And then I installed GIMP. Since then, PDF files have been opening in GIMP. I've tried reinstalling evince, I've tried editing ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list , I've tried editing /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, but PDF files still open in GIMP by default.

I hope this is in the right spot, and I have searched but haven't been able to find anything to help me out.
I installed GIMP recently, it worked for awhile, but now it will not open up even after the 'Starting GIMP...' appears. That goes and nothing happens. I've tried un-installing and installing via the software centre as well as via the terminal with no success. Will be happy to go through steps again if someone gives me some guidance.

I'm using Lucid and I installed Gimp. When I open it, the thing on the panel shows up saying Gimp is starting, but then it disappears and the window never comes up. When I type gimp in the terminal, it says "gimp: error while loading shared libraries: libgimpwidgets-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". I can't find a package starting with libgimpwidgets in Synaptic. I added "[URL]" to my /etc/apt/sources.list because I saw something about installing Gimp in Lucid that said to do that, but it hasn't helped. I imagine I just need to get this package from somewhere, but I don't know where.

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:
Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....
If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

like to update it on occasion. Recently I attempted to edit an image locally. I use vbulletin, which relies on png for it's forum icons. When I tried to change the default image for a new one I created using GIMP, I saved it as a *.png file. Yet, when I looked at the saved file - it was actually a *.xcf file (which I've never even heard of before). What gives?ensure it is saved with a png extension when I select png extension, instead of the xcf extension it seems intent on saving as?The image was originally a jpg, if that makes any difference. I can't see as it does though. When I was on Windoze, I used Paint Shop Pro - and if I told it to save a file with a png extension, it amazingly saved it with a png extension

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

I didn't have this problem in GIMP 2.6.8: when I double clicked an image file in Nautilus, the file opened in an existing instance of the GIMP, if it was already running. Now, after I compiled and installed GIMP 2.6.10, a double-clicked file opens into a new instance of the program. The same for files that are dropped on the GIMP icon in the panel. The only way to avoid this behaviour is to switch to the running instance of GIMP and use the Open command.

I scanned hundreds of pages in gray scale and would like to batch process them to B&W. You can do this using the gimp GUI. what it does is get rid of all the gray shading from reflections off the paper when scanned. So you get crisp white backgrounds with black text and diagrams. I would like to simply do this to the entire group directory at one time as it would be quite a lot of effort to open them and do them one by one.

I've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine. This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.
I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.

I'm using Image Viewer to go through a bunch of pictures and most of them need small fixes which I'm doing in GIMP. At the moment, I'm going through the right-click menu to open them in GIMP, but I wondered if there was an easy way to add a keyboard shortcut to do this. Think I figured out how to make a keyboard shortcut to open GIMP in general, but not sure how to do "Open With"
