I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and after recently changing a theme, all icons are stuck as GNOME defaults.I read some threads where it's only the folder icon that's stuck but as it is every single icon then I decided I'd best just ask.

Even after reverting back to the ambiance theme, or other themes, I've noticed that some elements of the Elegant Gnome theme have remained (e.g. the panel color and icons in Chrome or after right clicking and the system font).Is there a way to restore the Gnome defaults or Ubuntu system defaults so that everything is as it should be?

All works well, but I can't get the nice icons for user login in kdm.
Of course, I tried to change this in kde system config, but with no result. In fact what I do there do not change anything.
I suspect some sort of permission problem, but how can I simply reset all the global kde settings (The problem arise before login)

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 in a virtual box but it has defaulted to Gnome rather than Unity. I've never used Linux before (had to get it for my software paper at uni) so really have no idea what I'm doing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I just installed gnome-shell and i cant seem to find anyway to customize anything, esp. the task bar, the clock, et cetera
is there a preferences gui or something that I cant find? I feel like i'm trying to use a mac....
It seems pretty sweet, but, i dont know how to get used to not having a window list... i dont wanna pull up the "activities window" or alt tab every time i want switch windows (esp when my hand is used to just moving to the top of the screen and clicking on the right window...
There's this autohide taskbar at the bottom of the screen, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it's for, or how to put things on it....
I recently installed Wheezy from a DVD (that was written almost a year and half ago) to my desktop. The DVD install was a minimal one, so after installation I updated the system and installed gnome. But after reboot, my gnome always falls back to gnome-classic.

May be some firmware is missing, so I installed firmware-linux, firmware-linux-free, firmware-linux-nonfree, firmware-realtek, firmware-atheros (last two following a boot time warning). what file do you set the defaults in? I want to set all my users to use a blank screensaver and a time out of 20min. password required. Have been looking all over the place for a valid config file I can edit and the syntax for it. I should also mention I want these to be default for all user that CANNOT be changed except by root. Red Hat running gnome in my case.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI was using simple backup config to backup home to an external drive and it was working fine for the past week or so and today after the backup the computer was restarted and I am unable to log on. I get an error message saying. "the configuration defaults for gnome power manager have not been installed correctly "
I did some googling and the problem is that / is full. I have been trying for the past three hours to delete some space on / so that I can log on. I used ctr-alt-f1 and I can log on there but whatever command I use to delete the root trash it fails. I get an error message saying /root/.local/share/Trash/files/ is not a file or directory.
delete root trash so I can log onto this computer. I have used every variant of sudo rm -r /root/.local/share/Trash/files/ that I could find including one using Chmod. I have already tried the commands found in this tutorial [URL]
I also reinstalled gnome but that did nothing.
My monitor kept powering down after 20 minutes so I installed Gnome-power-manager by yum so that I could change the settings. After the installation and every time I try to use it I get a message saying:

I'm now unable to effect a change in the power settings and the display keeps turning off.

2) ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/%gconf.xml is empty - is it empty for someone with a working install?
3) how I can change the power settings without the gui - I'm googling on this point and will post the answer as and when I find it.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in Virtual Box and while using Normal visual effects I get an odd problem with the windows. When a window touches the top or bottom Gnome panels it gets stuck there and I cannot move it away from the panel. Trying to drag the window causes the window to slowly slide to the right along the panel till it goes off the screen and finally pops free.If I turn visual effects to none the problem goes away leading me to conclude it is a problem with Compiz. Any ideas what is going wrong for me? It should be easily reproducible with the current Virtual Box software, Ubuntu 10.10 64bit desktop, and the repository versions of the Virtual Box guest additions.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot into Ubuntu, it goes to the log in screen. I can type in my password and then the screen flashes black and then the log-in screen comes back. If I boot into recovery mode, I can log in via terminal, but if I type startx it just brings up a black screen and a mouse cursor and that's it. Did GNOME get messed up? How would I fix it? I have an Ubuntu LiveCD that I can use, so if I have to install any packages or something, would I be able to download them in the livecd and just install them on my broken installation instead of having to figure out connecting to wifi in a terminal?

When I boot and just before I enter my password If I select "Gnome" in bottom task bar, when my desktop boots there are no short cut icon on the desktop. If I select "Failsafe Gnome" when the desktop boots all is fine.Why is this Happening. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?

One icon normal and the second blurry. Other than this Gnome 3 seems to be fine. Anyone know how to fix this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently was playing with some gnome settings and I went to System > Preferences > Startup applications then I hit the Options tab and checked "Automatically remember applications when logging out" was testing to see if it actually worked... and it did.. so I unchecked it and restarted again and... it's the SAME 3 applications I was running.. and its stuck..tried checking it again and then closing everything but now it's still doing it with the same 3 apps I had running (Totem, Firefox, Pidgin).Anybody know how to wipe where it's remembering the applications I'm running? so this can stop when I log in.

F15 from fresh install off LiveCD. I find that on fresh login my ssh agent situation is a bit confused.
I normally ssh-add my keys to the authentication agent, and then ssh to remote hosts without thinking too much about it. Recently, the ssh command has been hanging. Running with -vvv shows it stops at the point it should talk to gnome-keyring:
At that point it hangs and a ctrl-c will kill it.
The ssh-add command cannot connect to the ssh agent:
If I run to that ssh hang again, and this time grep ps for keyring:
I haven't had any gnome-keyring-prompt window appear on my desktop. Checking all workspaces, and using the Gnome 3 Overview screen to visually view open windows, doesn't show it. "kill -9 2101" returns the hung ssh attempt to the prompt immediately. Thinking about it, I don't believe I've had the Gnome 'enter your password to unlock your keyring' prompt once since installing F15.
I noticed that SSH_AUTH_SOCK seems a little confused:
So it seems that gnome-keyring-daemon is using one tmp directory while my shell has been set up with another. If i manually set the SSH_AUTH_SOCK variable, things start working again:
As I now have to reset SSH_AUTH_SOCK in every terminal I want to use the agent in.
What's the next best step to investigating why the gnome keyring prompt isn't appearing, and how the SSH_AUTH_SOCK variable is getting mismatched with the gnome-keyring-daemon's tmp dir?
All in a sudden I can no longer login to my desktop (FC10 Gnome). After I typed in my passwd the desktop was trying to spawn for a few seconds (a black screen with curser and blue spashes) and it goes right back to the Login screen again. I tried to boot with 'single' mode and changed my passwd from root but to no avail. Not sure what I did wrong during my last session: I was fooling around with the NFS setup for my new Eval Board.

Only User Defined Session and Recovery Console options are available but they are not working as well. But when I did the Gnome 3 upgrading, it asked for me to remove unused packages and I said yes. About 20 packages removed. Do I need to reinstall my Ubuntu? Or can I get my old Gnome 2? (Not Unity, I didn't like it.)

I want to know how the size of the gnome icons in toolbars (see pic) is specified. Those icons for 'new', 'open', 'save', ... that are used in Nautilus or Gedit.
I just played around with the gtkrc of my theme, but I couldn't find any option there. Aren't the icons scaleable? Are there smaller icon sets available?
Basically I decided to install KDE, then after disliking it I uninstalled it, however I am left with icons for all the old KDE apps in my applications bar, is there any way I can get them removed.

After a new installation of Ubuntu 10.10 (regular or alternative) I get to the login screen as usual. However, after logging in I get no panels or icons. In fact, I only get the Ubuntu background and a working mouse cursor. The same happens when I try Ubuntu from the live CD (with a black background). The installation itself was performed in a high resolution with no problems at all! I got a panel there (for sound, wireless, etc.).
After installation I can also Ctrl-Alt-F1 to login textually to see my processes. When I restart GDM I will get back to the login screen, but I after visually logging in I again see no panels or icons! Where should I start with a working visual installation and login screen, but a blank desktop environment after login?
Reinstalling or creating another user will not work.

I tried installing it in gnome classic hoping that it carries over to gnome 3 but cant find the theme manager panel anymore.
