Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Usage Monitor Meter

Jul 24, 2011

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 and have a DSL connection straight from my local telephone (landline) provider.I need a ubuntu app, preferably a daemon/service (that I can start up on boot) that, in essence, can simply log to a file, on a per session basis (with timestamps of course), the bandwidth I use (download + upload bytes).

I'm not interested in logging site info etc., just want raw data usage so at the end of the month I can run some summary reports on it.Basically I was to see if my ISP is cheating me or not (and in general to control myself on my HUGE ..... + ISO download habbits)..I need nothing fancy, even a basic command will do in which case i'll be happy to write my own basj script for that...

As stated in previous posts I've not long come back to linux, I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good lightweight download usage meter to help track how much of my monthly allowance I have used etc.Under windows I was using one that logged into the Bigpond site and would display usage, how much was left and how many days were left till the end of the billing period.I've done some searching but so far can't find anything similar for linux.

Fedora :: Fluxbox Laptop Battery Charge Meter

Jun 24, 2011

I've been tooling around with Fedora with the Fluxbox environment on my old Dell 400SD4 laptop and it works fantastic. I'm still getting a feel for the environment, but one major concern that I had was a battery meter. Being a laptop, it's important to know when I'm almost out of juice. Does anyone have any suggestions for a battery meter for Fluxbox? Preferably one that can be installed through the yum repositories?

Fedora :: Hidden Disk Space Usage \ Can't Figure Out Where The Runaway Usage Is?

Dec 10, 2010

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results. For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h

Ubuntu Networking :: Keeping Track Of Mobile Broadband Data Usage Across Computers?

Jun 6, 2010

the data usage information from the carrier is often several hours old and is accessed in some arcane ways (logging into their website, sending a specific SMS message at best). Here's my idea: single-session data usage is perfectly reported by ifconfig ppp0. The problem is, how tokeep track of previous sessions accumulate the numbers rollover to zero at specified date To be able to do this across computers means that one needs to store it on the modem/SIM card itself. (As a specially crafted SMS message, or a contact).

Fedora :: F14 Updates When Using Mobile Broadband?

Nov 7, 2010

In the previous versions of Fedora, the check for updates when connected through mobile broadband appeared disabled, which made sense as I don't want updates when connected through a mobile phone but will wait until I'm connected through either ethernet or wifi.

Took my laptop into work on Friiday (9am Friday is the time concert tickets go onsale). Connected to mobile broadband using Fedora 14 and got the updates available icon, surely this shouldn't happen?

Fedora :: CPU Usage Always 10%?

Nov 23, 2009

I recently installed Fedora 12 x64 on my laptop. Whenever I check "system monitor" the CPU usage is always 10% whether it is split between the two cores or done all on one. It keeps the CPU at 37degrees Celsius (body temp). I disabled crond from starting (I think it is similar to scheduled task in MS Windows), IP6Tables, sendmail, and smolt.

"System Monitor" tells me that only it itself is using 2%cpu but everything else is using 0%. If it makes any difference, I didn't install the ATI drivers because after installing the drivers, Fedora never gets past the boot screen. However, I read the instruction manual and it said that after installing you must run some configuration utility. I never did that so I will try that again on the weekend.

Fedora Networking :: Monitor Broadband Internet Traffic Only ?

On my Linux machine I am looking for some software that allows me to keep track of my broadband usage on that machine, excluding traffic between the two machines.

There are numerous such programmes for this in XP, which use Winpcap and a GUI frontend. The "other" machine on my LAN is XP and uses just such a program.

Fedora Networking :: Mobile Broadband Drops Connection After 30s

May 8, 2010

I'm having problems with my mobile connection. This has been working fine for months, but in the past few days it has connected OK, I've been able to transfer data, but after 30s the connection closes. Setup is Acer AA1 with F12 connecting via bluetooth to Nokia 3110c on O2.

So to try and figure out what's happening I put the bluetooth dongle in my desktop PC, also running F12, made a connection and again it dropped out after 30s. Then I fired up windows on the AA1 and made a connection using the same dongle, this time it held up OK. This leads me to think that something has changed recently in F12 to upset it.

Fedora Networking :: 'fuzzy' Pictures On Mobile Broadband?

Nov 4, 2010

This is not really a problem but I'd like to know if anything can be done about it.I run Fedora 12 (kernel 2.6.32.23-170.fc12.i686)/Gnome 2.28.2 on my Acer Aspire One netbook with a 1.6GHz Atom CPU and 1.5Gb RAM.I use a Huawei E160 mobile broadband modem to get online and this works OK; but (for example) I am on Airliners.net and looking at the trip reports, the photos are somewhat 'fuzzy'. Obviously the modem does not download too much data and you just have to do Shift+A to get it to 'reload' the pictures. After this they are crystal clear. However, is there a config setting that you could alter to do this automatically e.g. download all the image data at once? I have looked in the Network Manager settings for my mobile broadband account and there is nothing in there.

Fedora Networking :: Mobile Broadband Dongle Restarts Itself?

Sep 5, 2011

I few days ago I bought a mobile broadband, with dongle model Huawei e1820. I have no problem connecting to the internet. The settings in network manager are correct. But when I use the modem with high traffic for a while, like streaming, the speed gets slower and slower until finally the modem shuts down and restarts itself. After the modem restarts, it connects to the internet again, but now the speed is terrible. And if i continue using high traffic it will restart itself in a matter of minutes. But if I plug it out and don't use it for a while, the speed is back to "acceptable". For a while...

I'm using fedora 15, and have also tried it on Ubuntu Natty with the same result. Reinstalled usb_modeswitch. configured usb_modeswitch with all the guides on the web. No results.
