View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file
I would like to modify the boot loader settings and triedo open the file grub.confHowever, it is said that the file could not be opened, as seen in the attachment.Tried to authenticate as 'root' before opening the file, but the problem still exist...
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm really struggling to be able to boot into my Linux partion, so I'm gonna stop just taking stabs in the dark and ask for help.
My drive layout is:
750 GB : (sda)
Data | Linux | Linux Swap
1 TB: (sdb)
Weird Windows 100MB Drive | Windows <--- Primary in BIOS (Booted from)
For all intents and purposes my 1TB is my primary but because of how I plugged them in, that is sdb.
Installed Fedora once, but didn't see the bootloader, realised it was because I had installed it on sda and my BIOS was set to boot off sdb.
Installed Fedora again, this time successfully getting the boot loader, but when choosing Windows I was presented with "BOOTMGR.exe" not found. During bootloader setup I told it sdb1 was my Windows partition..?
Now I've just run a BOOTREC.exe from the recovery console, but obviously kissing goodbye to GRUB in the process.
The issue I have now is I got GRUB wrong twice with a GUI, I don't think I stand much chance doing it text based in a recovery console.
I have 1GB ram and 2GB swap space. It seems that linux programs somehow are aware that there are 3GB ram avaialable and pretty fast uses more than 2.5GB. System becomes unresponsive because of excessive swapping. On the other hand if I disable swap, using the same programs (chrome, vlc, openoffice) I get only ~600MB use while watching videos and browsing net.
I know, that linux uses all available ram to enhance performance, but in my case, it really hurts the performance. I also cannot leave the swap off, because I sometimes want to do some 3d editing, and then the memory usage can exeed 1GB.
So basicly my question is, if it is possible to force swap usage only when really needed, and make it so, that swap is not considered free ram and filled up with useless junk. (For example, if swap is enabled VLC player just loads whole movie into swap! - which of course is useless, because movie is located on the same hard drive, but VLC is not the only offender)
My distro is ClearOS, which is RHEL so I assume this is the right place.I moved my sytem from an old PATA-drive to a bigger SATA. ClearOS uses LVM for the root directory and the swap directory, so this VolumeGroup was moved using lv-commands. I left the old hda drive in for the time being and hda also remained the BIOS start up disk. /boot is at hda2.Now, clearly there are 2 VolGroup00/ LogVol00 's: on hda and sda.
Eventually I wanted to unload my hda. I copied /boot from the hda disk to sda, changed (hd0,1) to (hd0,0) as /boot is in different locations, later found out that I needed to do the same for the location of the splash image and did that as well, but I don't get access to my new VolGroup.I did an /sbin/mkinitrd and a grub-install on the new sda but no luck. I have seen various error messages. The latter one is that grub loader 1.5 is active, giving me a grub prompt.

What is the configuration issue in the other-than-Fedora-11 stanza below that prevents that OS from booting? That stanza is taken directly from the /boot/grub/menu.lst of that OS, whose root partition is on sda5. All I get upon choosing the menu entry is a blinking cursor and a steady HD light. obsessing over this for a couple of weeks, reading what I can find about grub configuration but without joy.

my friend was installing ubuntu when he while editing the table from the installation menu, chose to shrink the partition and use it as swap, he didn't realize he was using the actual partition not the 1 to be created as swap.so he ended up with 160 GB swap and 15 GB NTFS partitions.will deleting the partitions and recreating the NTFS partition again restore his data?

I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have windows vista on one sata HDD, and fedora on a second sata HDD. After installing fedora of course the grub is auto booting fedora. I would like vista to be the default O/S. I dont care if i modify the grub file to have it manually boot vista, or to remove the grub interface all together, i just want it to auto boot vista. My bios is programed to boot my vista drive before my fedora drive, however it keeps booting the grub and it boots fedora, which i find kind of odd. below is the contents of my grub.conf file:

Im guessing its because i have the operating systems on two seperate drives, where the other guy just had them on a single drive.

I just tried setting my vga mode in grub.conf so that I can have my boot splash back after disabling nouveau. Works great. Problem is, now, that after doing this my touchpad is disabled. Anyone else run into this? I'm on an HP dv6, FC13, vga=0x37b. I remove vga mode setting and touchpad works again.

after yesterday's update to kernel 2.6.35.10-72 my grub.conf didn't get updated and ll /boot shows that neither vmlinuz or initramfs exist for that kernel. uname -r though tells me I'm running 2.6.35.10-72.
How can I do that? and on another more reallystic matter how can I generate the missing files so I can manually update grub.conf?
I was installing command-line-only version of Ubuntu from alternate cd. I already have an existing standard Ubuntu installation on a separate partition. Both installations share the same /home partition. When asked to choose the /boot partition, I provided the /boot partition that was used by my previous standard installation. Now that installation has finished successfully, when I try to boot, GRUB only points to the later installation (no X). Is there a way to point GRUB to my first installation as well?

A while ago I moved partitions from sda1 to sda6 because the original partition wasnt big enough. So when I update grub (now grub 2) it resets everything to sda1 and I've no idea how its doing it. Does anyone know where grub 2 gets the default partition from or does it just select sda1 automatically?

1) How can I remove grub from sda1 and install it on sdb?
2) Should it be on sdb1 or sdb2?

My soundcard seems to have problems working with a certain game in windows xp so I decided to create a different installation of windows xp to use with onboard sound drivers instead. I had a backup of my clean current install on a dvd, so thought I would use this to speed up the procedure. I have two hard drives - the sata has my normal windows boot on and my ext4 ubuntu installation. The id drive has only files on. So I decided to shrink the partion on the ide drive using gparted and then create a new primary partition. I then installed my backup to this newly created partition.
At first it did not appear in the boot manager. Then I did a sudo update-grub and it now does, however whichever windows installation I now select from the grub, it always seems to boot into the same (old) installation, rather than the new one I installed from a backup. How I can actually get it to boot into this new installation? It might be due to windows boot ini settings or disc / partition flags or whatever, as I tried fiddling with those.
I have 2 partitions (sda1 & sda3). Both have Ubuntu installed on them. GRUB is using the boot/grub/menu.lst on sda3. How do I get it to use the boot/grub/menu.lst on sda1?

I have one harddrive and a DVD drive. In the bios, the harddrive is mentioned first. So (hd0,5) should point to the /dev/sda6.
BUT when I start my computer, it returns to the grub prompt. The command root gives: (hd0,6).
Why? It should be (hd0,5).
At the grub prompt I enter: root (hd0,5) and configfile /grub/grub.conf and the computer boots fine to fedora.
How can I tell grub use the correct partition?
