I am facing System Speed problem.i saw in top command Xorg process is using CPU and memory upto 75% most of the time,this is why System responding slowly.how to make it normal i do not know. Currently i am using AMD Athlon 64 HT technology processor(Socket 939)

For some reason after the computer is on and idle for a little while, xorg starts using all available CPU resources. When I come back to use the computer, the screensaver will either be running nice and smooth, or the screen will be black. Either way, I won't be able to get back into X. I'll ctrl+alt+F1 into the console (or ssh if it's still not responsive) and "top" shows me xorg is hogging all the available CPU. I'll kill -3 <xorg> and it the computer will come back to the kdm login screen. What the %^&*??? It's a little irritating. I'm using Bouncing Cows and Seti@home when idle, but both do their job and close when they detect a key press. Even via ssh when I already tried waking up the computer with a key press, it shows the screensaver closed and seti is idle.
I have Debian/Lenny installed with all the latest updates and ATI's driver installed with direct rendering enabled (350fps for the cows, >2000fps for glxgears). it's a Dell Inspiron 8600, 1.8GHz, 2GB Ram, 80GB HD, ATI 9600pro/128MB.
I don't know if anyone has used Damn Small Linux (dsl), but they've got a cool little system resource monitor builtin to the desktop on the latest version-- Not the old wmnet and wmcpu that they had before, and not the ones the come with ubuntu-- Attached is a screenshot, it's in the upper right corner outlined in red .
Was wondering if anyone knew the app that this was-- I checked their packages list and didn't see it, I don't know if they modified wmnet/wmcpu or something, but I think it'd be cool to have this on my desktop.Especially if it's from DSL, because that is a tiny distro that runs fast, it can't take up too much room.
I have installed RipperX and the Lame MP3 encoder, as well as Oggenc. I noticed that Ripperx plugins are loaded at boot. The thing which concerns me is that there are multiple instances of a plugin witht the same name showing in system monitor( or ps command). There are about 15 processes alone with the name "plugin-Lame."

Are these actually different? Or do I really have redundant instances running? I'm concerned because I have an old system with limited RAM, and all the plugins together make an impact. If they are all neccessary and needed for RipperX, is there a way to have them load up when RipperX is started, rather than at boot-time?
If I try to use any other package or software management tool this is what it tells me, basically I think that ubuntu tweek has taken over and will not allow anything to update the system any more pls help?
Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time.
I am using VLC 1.1.9 on a Dell Latitude D600 with Ubuntu 11.04 and it is taking over my system. Every time I try to open a folder or a file VLC opens instead. I can dig down from "computer" to the folder or file but every other item from the "places" drop down menu will open VLC even if the folder is empty or contains non media files. I uninstalled VLC and the problem disappeared - naturally - but reappeared as soon as I reinstalled VLC. This doesn't happen on my AspireOne which also runs Ubuntu 11.04. Other than hardware,the only difference in the two machines that I can think might affect it is that the Dell has an upgraded version from Maverick whereas the netbook has a clean install of Naty. My only other thought was that is this an Intel / AMD thing as the Aspire has the netbook standard intel gfx chipset whilst the D600 uses an old ATI 9000 series gfx chipset and I did have to install some AMD 2d libs to get it to run smoothly. However I think that might be grasping at straws.

I have Kubuntu 10.10 64-bit, which was running fine until I did a bunch of apt-get software installs to permit me to compile YaWP weather plasmoid. In the process I am now at KDE 4.6.2, and my system is now non-functional, not able to start KDE desktop.
When KDE starts I get continuous krunner segfaults, krunner is taking 100% of the CPU, the desktop is there but the system is unusable. /var/log/messages is filled with the krunner segfaults, each line further indicating "error 4 in libkio.so.5.6.0". I tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, problem remains.
I expect I have created some software incompatibility with my installs, but I do not know how to diagnose/resolve.
I am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?
View 8 Replies View RelatedRunning Ubuntu 10.10 on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR430E laptop.My system had been running noticeably slow lately, so I decided to poke around the system monitor and see what was eating my resources. Xorg peaked at around 50% cpu, so I decided (in a rash decision) to remove it. Went to Syanptic Package Manager -> completely remove all "Xorg server" packages ( was alerted that Xorg itself would have to be reinstalled for this to happen, "OK" ). After Syanptic finished, I looked back to the System Monitor and saw Xorg still there, still eating CPU. Out of frustration, I selected "End Process".The grub loader still works so I can switch between kernel versions and "recovery" mode, but a normal boot simply takes me to a black screen. I tried sudo apt-get update from Recovery mode, only to get an error when connecting to the repositories.

I have done several searches on my computer and looked on other forums posts as to where that file should be located and I cannot find this file anywhere on the system. Does Ubuntu 10.4 even have a xorg.conf file?

Programs greyout and become completely unresponsive for long periods of time and cpu usage on one or both cores ramps up. As I type it is c.80% on both. System Monitor shows usage on the cores mirroring one another. top in terminal shows Xorg at 99%. I have attached a screenshot. I have rolled back and/or reloaded the Nvidia graphics drivers to no effect.

And because its constantly allocating, it degrades perforamce horribly.Interesting thing is I never had this problem before, recently one of my ram modules broke (2+2 GB) and now I have only one, but it still doesnt explain the memory overuse. Windows 7 works perfectly fine.

I tried startx command but the result was command not found. I could not find the .bin/bash_profile to edit it. I had in mind to #nano /etc/inittab

I did not do it since i had to edit the .bash_profile with startx command which I was not able to spot. Whereis could not find the file. I tried to apt-get install x-windows-system but apparently I have a problem with my internet cause it can not download from Debian repositories. I check with ifconfif and later ping and i had results so i might not have problem with the internet. Is it possible the server to be set up so the user can not get into the x-window system? Did they disable anything? Do I have to install xorg and if yes can anybody give me an idea how I can do it?
Not sure why I get the same result between (amd64) debian, kubuntu, xubuntu, but the screen will pixelate once the desktop is fully loaded, sometimes when an app window opens like konsole/terminal.
I've tried various combinations, with & without the GeForce PCIx, even the live CDs freeze. Please trust me when I say I exhaust searching for what's already been asked/posted/resolved before posting, yes even Google, I'm at a loss... It freezes like a kernel panic because Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't do jack, nor Ctrl+Alt+BkSp, would dmesg have logged anything useful?

I upgraded all xserver-xorg packages in my notebook. After restart system Xorg (GDM) don't run. My screen is black. If I will go to console CTRL+ALT+FX, screen is black too. I will go to console only in single-mode and I tried run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but without results. I haven't got /etc/X11/xorg.conf in my system. I have got integrated Intel graphics card.

Now here's the odd part. If I uncomment the Device section and reboot or logout so that X restarts, my screen will not enter graphics mode. It just flashes on and off several times in text mode and finally stops. It's as if it keeps changing modes trying to get happy and never does.
I want to run some xulrunner based program on EC2 - it will run automatically but it needs some display as far as I understand. That probably requires X11 with some dummy screen driver.

View 5 Replies View RelatedNow that I have system-config-display installed I tried to create a new xorg.conf so I can have 3D acceleration, etc using the correct driver. But the xorg.conf file generated does not work. It locks up the laptop (Toshiba Satellite A45-S250). I don't understand why this happens because the Fedora 12 Live CD (for i686) works find on boot.
I tried looking for the xorg.conf file after booting the live CD but it doesn't exist. I don't understand what is happening here. Also, when I used an older version of Fedora (8 I think) the X driver was i810 which worked fine. It gave me all the 3D acceleration, etc. When I installed F11 it gave me a dumbed down install using the VESA driver. What happened to the i810 driver? Why does the intel driver not work? Why does the Live CD work great but an installed system not?
Necessary info: Toshiba Satellite A45-S25 Fedora 12 (preupgraded from F11)

The problem is, baobab (disk usage analyzer) tells me that there are something like 50GiG free. I am sure that I have the free space ( I can write big files ) but the system keeps reporting low disk space.

I got a fairly powerful media system standing in the living room. Most of the time it is idle, maybe playing some music. At the same time I got a pc in my office that is less resourceful. Sometimes I'll run programs through ssh with the -XC command. This way a program will seemingly run on my office pc, while it is actually running on the media system. However:
- 1 Sound doesn't transfer to the office pc.
- 2 When using a program I need to constantly be aware where I save my files. Sometimes it is located on the remote computer, sometimes it isn't.
Is there an alternative way to use the resources on the media system? E.g. run a program that is stored on the office pc and process it on the media system?
Both systems run Ubuntu (office 10.04 - media system 10.10).
I just recently upgraded to 10.04 (LTS), and I have been using stardict app for a long time with nothing but success on each of my laptops anc omputers I have had over the past 5 or so years. However, now on one laptop after starting the stardict app, using panel the applet I create on my xfce4-panel (as per normal), and looking up a word (highlight and press shift key which i use for quick word search using stardict), the app begins using 100% cpu resources and I am forced to kill the process.
The problem is intermittent, meaning it only occurs half of the time I am using startdict, while the other half of the time it operates normally. I have been trying to see if there is some sort of pattern, perhaps other apps running at the time the problem occurs, but I have not noticed anything that looks suspect, since I generally fire up stardict after boot in and have had it happen (the problem) without even any other apps open (just testing to try and find some sort of pattern to locate the potential issue).
I use a standard set of dictionary files for each of my comps, and currently have stardict operating fine on 2 other laptops, both running 10.04, with the same set-up (xubu, same apps, and settings pretty much) and no indications of this problem on either (other) laptop.
I installed ubuntu 10.10 a few days ago which ran very well on the live CD but after I upgraded to 11.04 Ubuntu uses just under 100% of my cpu after a few mins loged in and my ram usage increases by about 5MB per sec starting the second I log in. I am using Classic Gnome and it seems to do this wether I have metacity or compiz turned on. Does anyone know what is going on or know about a way to lower ether my cpu or ram usage
