Is it possible to replace the onscreen keyboard used (for example) on the login screen? I'm currently using IOK as the onscreen keyboard on the desktop and would like to use it on the login screen.
Also, is it possible to automatically launch an onscreen keyboard (IOK) when you click on an input field?
I've tried iok, cellwriter (a cracker) and a few others but what annoys me is that I can't seem to find a way to get them to vanish and only pop up when a text entry box is clicked into (wii web browser stylee). Is it possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to activate the on screen keyboard (onBoard) without typing, except at the log-in screen. There must be some sequence of mouse clicks to get there, otherwise that was a serious design flaw. The other posts I found here explained how to do it but only with typing involved.)

But this morning, I can not even login to my own desktop, as I do not see any feedback from the login screen when I type using the keyboard. completely white, nothing shown when I type using the keyboard. I tried different keyboards, it still won't work in the login screen. I tried to type to access bios, it works fine.I managed to remote using ssh, but when I type dmsg, it recognise the keyboard.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Logitech Wave keyboard and mouse for my computer. I am not sure which version of Ubuntu I am running on but I think it is 6.10. When I boot up my computer I can go into the BIOS and earlier today it would even let me press escape to seee which operating systems I could boot. Now it no longer lets me see the operating system I have (which is why I cant say which version of Ubuntu I have). It takes me to the log in page and asks for the username and password but I cant type and I cant move the mouse. Earlier I could also use Alt+F1-F12, but this is no longer working either so it just sits at the login page and nothing works at all. The computer that is having this problem is very old it is a Proteva and when I opened up the actual computer the processor says:

I know that the BIO's are to old for Ubuntu to run properly because at startup it also says that: "ACPI :

I have'nt used this computer for about a year or two, but the last time I used it it worked perfectly fine. I have been seeing questions on the forums similar to mine, but their problems are on other versions of Ubuntu and their mouse's are said to work fine. I cant try any of the solutions for the problems I have read about because I cant open the prompt that you get when you are at the log in screen and press F2. I have no idea what to do.
I'm on a LG E500-VAP36P, with 3gb RAM, 250 Gb SATA HDD (Kubuntu Hardy kernel 2.6.27-9-generic), and my keyboard and my usb mouse don't work at the login screen. My touchpad works and my keyboard works in command-line session. This is my xorg.conf. I also attach a relevant part of my syslog.

I run the updates on my laptop a while ago and decided to restart it to check if everything went okay. It seems not.
The only way i can get on the desktop, is to choose the recovery mode, su to user and startx.

I downloaded and burnt the Kubuntu 10.04 release to a CD. I tried to install it. First time, couldn't find the disks and eventually it froze. Ok, second try, when it's contacting the "time server" (or whatever) another freeze, but this time I notice everything is running fine and then get a nice little image with the current time (increasing seconds and all). Third attemp, clicked the "update this installer" and it went fine. "Yay!" I thought. Well, a few minutes in my beautiful 10.04 system and again, another freeze. Hit the power button and to my surprise a "Shutdown" dialog shows up with a countdown. After 30 seconds it logs out and mouse is working again. I log back in and come here to write this long post, and as I was writing the title "Random mouse/ke..." guess what? Yeah, it froze again. And the little bar that goes after the writing continued happily blinking. Hit the power button but this time mouse and keyboard were still frozen in the login screen.
Short version: mouse and keyboard randomly freeze while the rest of the system apparently work fine.
I let the update manager run overnight on my netbook because it was taking a while. When I woke up, my netbook was off. It may have shut off during the updates. Now, when I turn it on, it gets to the login screen but the keyboard and mouse don't work. Is there anything I can do without a Live CD? Unfortunately I don't have a flash drive or anything with me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Centos 5.2 with a netinstall usb key. I had no Belgium keyboard mapping available during installation, so I chose a fr-latin1 layout. Now this is the default keyboard mapping for the gnome login screen, and for every new user on the system. How can I change this to a Belgium keyboard layout? I can change it for myself within my gnome session in Preferences>Keyboard, but I haven't found how to change the "global" or default setting.
View 1 Replies View RelatedGot myself in a bit of a squeeze here. I was messing around with the Xorg install on my Fedora 12 system. I ended up reinstalling it. Now my mouse and keyboard work fine in single user mode / terminal. But if I try and boot to X they dont work at the login screen. HAL and udev are booting. Ive done a udevadm monitor test in single user mode and its seeing the devices connect and disconnect. Ive also tried both USB and PS2 devices. Same issue. Ive tried playing with xorg.conf and generating it with Xorg -configure :1 I dont know to use to fix it. After banging my head against the wall for 20+ hours I decided it was time to ask for help. m just Lynxing around the web at the moment =X
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know that in previous versions of OpenSuSE one could be in front of the screen/KBD/mouse get things started, and log into another session and get things started there and run some apps, and so on. Now with OpenSuSE 11.x I see no means in which to do so. Is there another way? Point being is that I want to run one application as one user session and another application in yet another user session. Either one I can get to by switching user accounts at one screen/kbd/mouse. Or through VNC. No need to run something like xen or VMWare and incur additional overhead. (It is next on my list to try though.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile I was away from my computer a friend changed my keyboard layout to a random layout thinking he could revert it via mouse actions only. Unfortunately, by the time I returned, my screen was locked. Now I cannot unlock my session to get back in to the KDE session to restore the correct keyboard layout.
However, I can log in to a console. In the console (e.g., Ctrl-Alt-F1), the keyboard layout is unchanged, so I can edit any text files and make any other changes required. How can I change the KDE keyboard layout from a console? I'm running Kubuntu 10.04. There is no .kderc file in my home directory. And Xorg.conf doesn't contain the settings either. I'm not sure where else to look.
I did a quick search of the forums and noticed that 2 LED's flashing indicates some sort of kernel panic, but what about all three flashing, one at a time in sequence? I'm doing diskless booting of RedHat 5.1 on this machine but I'm hoping the problem isn't related to that, and just something simple. The OS loads, and I get to the login screen (not noticing anything about kernel panics during boot), but the keyboard doesn't work and the three lights flash. It's not a GUI login screen, so I don't know if the mouse would work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.
My laptop model is Dell Lattitude E6410, core i5, Intel HD Graphics, WD HDD 160GB. And I installed on the other partition, not my Windows one.
It's two days now I'm in deep troubles after my last "yum update". The system boots as usual, the graphical login pops up the normal way but no input is handled by either the internal keyboard (the system is a laptop), the mouse pad, the external USB mouse and keyboard.
The hardware itself seems to be working as I can pop up the BIOS menus and even edit the GRUB booting line. But, after GRUB there's no possible input. I've tried to boot the system with the Fedora 11 DVD, rescue menu and then chroot. This in order to run a "yum update" in the hope that the problem was in some broken update. No chance: there's no update.
My questions are:
1. Is there a way to boot Fedora withou any graphical interface from GRUB (or anything else to skip the KDE)?
2. Is there a way to have the (cabled) network activated at boot *before* the graphical login?
3. What the he** is happening to my otherwise pefectly working laptop?
Does anyone knows of a way to customize keyboard layout? My laptop has a <del> key just by where <right alt> is, and the latter is being used extensively in polish layout. I would like to turn the original <ins> into <del> and vice versa, for example.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?

When I try to login with my username, the one I created when I installed the OS, it seems to try to login but almost immediately kicks back to the login screen. No authentication error it just seems to just logout? The only change I made since last successful login was to add ". .alias" to the .profile file - the only entries in the .alias file are comments and "alias" commands. I have one other username but it is not in the sudo's list of users so I can not change anything in the master login.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Aspire's LCD was heavily cracked and I would like to replace it myself. I ordered a new screen in the mail, which just arrived, and pulled up an online guide to replacing the screen. However, it would appear that these guides deal with older models.
All the guides state that the screen can be removed by popping off six rubber things around the edge of the faceplate, revealing the screws underneath. I popped the rubber thingies off to find no screws, but was able to pull the faceplate off except for the bottom, which seems secured to the base by two screws on either side. I cannot get to these screws because they are each covered by two round pieces of plastic which are level with the faceplate.
I will take it to a computer repair place if necessary, but I would really like to try to get this done myself first.
Has anyone had success with removing the faceplate of a later model Aspire One? My exact model is D255E-13111
