Debian Installation :: Squeeze: Apt-get Is Very Slow

Oct 21, 2010

Can't understand what's going on... Running 'apt-get update' I see that diffs are downloading with a normal speed (11.3 Mbyte by 49 seconds = ~ 227 Kbyte/sec - it's OK, my 'up' limit is 384 Kbyte/sec). But - running 'apt-get dist-upgrade' I see that packages are downloading w/ around 4000 byte/sec. WTF? What's the difference between downloading packages' diffs and packages themselves?

I've changed 6 mirrors - from oficcial (ftp.us.debian.org) to local (ftp.mgts.by). I've tried netselect-apt - no result. Still normall speed on 'apt-get update' and terrifying speed on 'apt-get dist-upgrade'.

I found Atom CPU is slow when booting the system, screen shows "Loading Linux ......................", is it because the N270 is running at half speed before the kernel is completely load to memory?

Kernel 2.6.32 is even slow because the kernel image is bigger than lenny. Is there a way to speed up this?

Debian Multimedia :: Extremely Slow Loading Of Image Files In GIMP

Jun 16, 2010

I've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine. This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.

I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.

Software :: Firefox / Opera Webpage Not Loading

Jan 3, 2009

I have posted the following below on the Ubuntu Forums but have not got a satisfactory answer yet. My problem is as follows:I have installed Xubuntu on my machine to test a setup I want to to for my in-laws. Everything went well until I realised I have a problem loading some pages on Firefox.
There is no error message but they are just stuck on loading and finally timing out. I have then downloaded Opera and I am showing the same problem. A bit of research showed it could be a IPV6 issue. I therefore disabled ipv6 in about:config and also /etc/modprobe.d/aliases - 'alias net-pf-10 ipv6' to alias 'net-pf-10 off ipv6'. No change - still can't get those pages loaded.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Is Loading Slow

Jun 4, 2011

I have set my Grub to select my default OS (Lucid lynx) after 3 seconds and which it does. But after that a black screen with blinking _ is displayed for sometime before Ubuntu loads with its splash screen.

I wonder what caused this? It was not the case before when ubuntu splash appeared almost immediately after Grub menu.

Fedora :: Firefox Very Slow Page Loading

May 5, 2010

With the last several updates to Firefox, loading pages from several different sites slows down to (slower than) a crawl - taking sometimes minutes. Most of the time, this occurs loading ads.

I don't remember what release this started with, but I didn't have problems before, and I don't have any problems loading the same web pages on IE8 (running on XP). This is the same on F12 and F11.

I have tried changing some of the securty choices, even tried blocking certain sites, but no luck.

Also, several times after a download, firefox freezes, although the rest of the desktop is okay.

OpenSUSE :: FireFox Slow Loading And Browsing

Aug 27, 2010

On my computer, I'm using 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 and Firefox 3.6.8. Firefox is so s...l...o...w..... It's slow loading and it's slow browsing. Konqueror takes 1, maybe 2 seconds to load, and another second to load the home page. Firefox takes a good 30 seconds to load. The only message I get when loading from a terminal is about not using a shared database. I don't hear the disk churning like it would with a fragmented disk.

I can't believe everyone is having this response, the hue and cry would be enormous! Anything to try? Should I try loading another browser? I tried Opera on 11.2 and didn't really like it, had problems with a lot of content. What about Sea Monkey (Gad, I HATE words with monkey in them!) Konqueror won't show a lot of videos and I have problems using the back and forward buttons. I'll wait for fixes but in the meantime.

Fedora :: Yum And RPM Slow Speed - Flash Player 10 Not Loading

Dec 10, 2009

I am currently using fedora 12. My question is why is the speed for my yum and rpm are very slow. Something like Flash Player 10 couldn't even load after being installed. If I downloaded the rpm, the speed is like normal but if I yum it. The ESA took like >1,000,000 sec..or whatever..The point is it does seem like something has happened to my yum/rpm function. I can download and surf the web as usual. I just can't get any add-on such as the Flash Player 10. I can only use the basic already provided by Fedora.

I tried:
su -
yum clean all
rpm --rebuilddb
yum update
but I am still unsure what type of RPM issue I am facing.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Internet - Some Page Not Loading At All?

Mar 21, 2011

Problem with Jaunty (yes I know its old) on line. The thing is some web pages are fine and some just never seem to open up with Firefox.

I dont seem to have any problems when I attempt to ping for instance google.

ping -c 1 google.com
PING google.com (209.85.149.103) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from ber01s02-in-f103.1e100.net (209.85.149.103): icmp_seq=1 ttl=59

I also can open up for example, The Guardian (newspaper) home page, but when I try to open any page within the site it will try loading to no avail.

In general it seems to be almost 50% open and 50% will never open.

Fedora Hardware :: Internet And Network - Really Slow Loading Of Pages

May 31, 2011

I recently bought my laptop (Fujitsu nh540) and installed FC14 on it. I have Integrated WLAN Atheros HB97 (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) (more info here about the config) running on: 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686.PAE

Since I installed FC I've had problems with the internet. In any browser pages load very slow, it looks like the browser waits some seconds, sometimes even 1-2 minutes until it actually starts to load the page.

Second thing I saw is that when it boots I keep getting:
Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable? [FAILED]
But I have WiFi internet. I am not using a wired internet connection.

I installed madwifi driver (compiled it, after reading some info on google and it seems it should be good for my network) and it seems it's a bit better, but I still have to wait some seconds until it starts loading pages. I tried different browsers, it makes no difference. On my other 2 laptops I have no problems, the internet works fine, same goes for my android mobile phone. Another "nice" problem I noticed is that when compiz is enabled I see incoming video on skype black and the same black screen for some movies with some programs. After disablig compiz, all works for video.

Hardware :: Very Slow BIOS Loading On 2002 Computer With Puppy Linux And GRUB

It is also slow to boot Puppy Linux from there. I reinstalled GRUB, to no avail. I decided that the problem was probably a slow BIOS, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know of another possible problem, or of a good boot-disk BIOS diagnostic tool? I tried using a couple of the tools on the Ultimate Boot Disk, but they all got hung up, displaying: - InitDisk as the last line in the sequence.
