Feb 28, 2011I've been using Fedora for quite awhile now, and thought I should move onto a different Distro. I'm used to the command "yum", and so this is all new. My hardware in my computer isn't that bad, but my graphics card is pretty old. I'm using the "radeon" driver because my card is an ATIx700 Pro. The proprietary driver won't work. The question I have is: Where are the Desktop Effects?Even with my "radeon" driver, It is able to run. I've had it on Suse and Fedora.

Mar 23, 2010I have installed Debian 5.0.4 on a 600Mhz iMac G3. When booting the usual text scrolls down the screen and then the screen goes blank. Cont-Opt-F1 gives me a terminal window. X is apparently configured and running since 'startx' returns the usual something about -1 error message. I am newly returned to the terminal window after years of GUI slackitude and I am not able to get either GNOME or KDE to come up. Is there some file I should be editing (sudo nano /fixthisthing) I feel like I am swimming in the right ocean, I just haven't spotted the island yet. The learning curve on Linux is pretty steep but I have managed to make the password deal quit making me change passwords at every, single, solitary, login, so I am not a total feeb. Some hints on navigating the file system wouldn't hurt either.

Jul 4, 2010Since an Aptitude upgrade to my Debian Squeeze operating system (using video driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.24) some weeks ago, which installed linux kernel 2.6-32-5-686, grub has been giving me two boot options (in addition to MS Windows). I expect that this is quite normal so far ...
However, if I try to boot using this new kernel, rather than kernel 2.6-32-3-686, I can only get the command line interface. Everything seems to work after boot with the new kernel, except (although the system seems to load kdm successfully) I cannot start X. Booting with the old kernel still takes me to the desktop as normal (I've set KDE to automatically bypass kdm, as I'm the only user of this standalone PC), and because of this I've been slow to address the issue with kernel 2.6-32-5-686, but since the problem doesn't seem to be going away with more recent upgrades, I suppose a request to the forum is the only way to go:
So, is the problem I'm having the same as was addressed in this thread? If not, would I only need to reinstall the same NVIDIA video driver so that it recognises the new kernel? If not, would installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.35 solve the problem, and would I have to deinstall the old video driver first? Finally, if and when I solve the problem, can I safely deinstall the old 2.6-32-3-68 kernel?
Debian :: Resolution All Different On Squeeze Desktop
Dec 31, 2010On my desktop with Squeeze the resolution is all different when I booted up this morning. It used to be something like 1680 x 1050 and now the highest available under system > preferences > monitors is 1360 x 768. I don't believe I have had any xorg.conf file on here since installation. There were a fair number of updates yesterday but I can't figure out what the source of this might be. My system is multiboot, though nothing but Squeeze has been booted for months.
I checked a different old linux distribution and it had the same problem but with even lower resolution. It shares the same home partition which has Gnome settings on it. Then I checked the w vista boot and even it had a similar problem of low resolution, though I was able to fix it by hand, selecting the higher resolution. So I can't figure out if the source of this problem is hardware, software, or what. I've checked all the connections and they seem tight.

May 31, 2011OK, I admit I'm a little OCD about icon placement on the Desktop - I want to do it myself - so this is driving me a bit nuts.I have right-clicked to disable the option 'keep aligned'. I have made sure it is disabled in gconf-editor. BUT IT KEEPS COMING BACK!ince I don't mess a lot with my desktop, I'll notice it's reverted when I add something new, can't place it exactly where I want to and once again have to untick 'keep aligned'.It seems to be random so not quite sure what might be triggering it.

Aug 12, 2015I'm sure you will laugh at me, however I do have to ask : is there a desktop environment at all in Jessie installation CD 1 , I mean the one I've downloaded here [URL].... , and to be precise this one [URL].... .
I've installed it in a virtualbox thinking that I'd see a Gnome desktop (assuming it is the default one and seeing that nothing was specified in the CD name), but there is no graphical environment at all, it boots to a console: dpkg -l finds no desktop components and there is no default display manager in /etc/X11 (of course startx only gets me another terminal, probably xterm) .
It should not be a virtualbox issue because the LXDE version there runs OK, I'm just a bit puzzled that no desktop environment at all is apparently installed even if I'm positive that I've checked that option during the installation: I've installed this CD without a network connection, but nevertheless, if the installer says "install a desktop environment" that's what I'm expecting to find...
I don't remember such an issue with Wheezy, in fact I only used CD 1 and there was indeed a Gnome desktop after installation - it's not a big deal, I'd just like to know if this is normal.

May 5, 2015Desktop lost (Cinnamon 2.2.16 for me) after a recent dist-upgrade in Sid. I'm new to Sid, so is this normal?

Debian :: Apt Wants To Auto-remove Most Of Desktop
Oct 16, 2015Fresh Jessie installation with KDE desktop. Installed from Disk 1 of the dvd images. Can't figure why apt wants to remove this stuff. The only packages I removed from the base installation was iceweasel, and juk. I'd like to autoremove to clean out the amarok stuff but I'm afraid it will take all the rest with it. What do I do about this, and or how do I fix it? Does apt have a setting where if an app isn't used for x amount of time it deems it useless for removal?

Mar 27, 2011I am going to upgrade from debian 5.0 to 6.0 today. I have backedup my home directory by copying it to a external harddrive. There is no other files placed anywhere except for the home directory. Is there anything else i should upgrade that everyone does? Like back up the programs i have installed?
the OS has a partition size of 20GB and the home directory has 9GB of that.

Apr 13, 2011I'm running testing, so yesterday I upgraded to the new kernel (2.6.38). Unluckly I can't get to the desktop, because the system just hangs (screen goes black then nothing happens). I have found that my problem is the radeon (open-source) driver. When the it tries to get to the desktop it enters an infinite loop, so the system hangs. The bug is better described here: [URL]. However, I don't know how to fix it. I would prefer not to go to the fglrx (proprietary) driver because of tearing issues.

Jan 19, 2011I recently switched to Debian Lennyx64 (from ubuntu) and I am really enjoying it so far. I have just one problem, when I drag open windows of any program around on my desktop there is major drawing lag of the window.
This happens in other situations like it is very painful to watch a fast moving IRC chat because of this lag.
I've tried using different windows managers and enviroments and the problem still exists. I have a pair of crossfired Radeon 4850s and I have the drivers installed from AMD's website. I have a first gen Phenom x4 with 8gb of RAM so I don't think its an issue with resources. I tried looking at the Xorg.conf but I really do not know what to look for.

Debian :: Desktop Freezes Randomly Two Times
Feb 17, 2010I have used debian in the past and I am pretty comfortable with it but I have been having an issue. My desktop has randomly frozen two times. All my applications are still running though. For example, I was still able to talk on skype with my friend. However, all I can do is move my mouse but I can not click on anything forcing me to restart. Here are some things that might be helpful:
-I was using compiz both times (I am assuming this might be why. however, I have used compiz on ubuntu and I have never had a problem)
-I use an ATI graphics card
-It froze the first time when I accidently tried to extract the skype install deb.
-It froze the second time when I pressed close in software sources
-Since I have installed debian, I have installed compiz, compiz effect packages, removed openoffice, installed opera, installed google chrome, installed flash, and installed skype.
Does anyone know why my desktop crashed?

Jan 6, 2011I've been a very happy user of Debian Squeeze (gnome) for a few months already.
Everything works great, but I am encountering an annoying, and regular problem: almost every time I update my system (through synaptic) and reboot, my desktop theme gets reset to the more "blocky" default gnome one.
What I do is run "gnome-settings-daemon," either as normal or super user, reboot, and get back my chosen original theme.

Now the only thing I understood is this will make it harder for the bad guys to give any fake packages while I'm updating from a debian mirror .
Am I correct in assuming that ?
Also do I just have to install the autotrust package and wait for the dnssec-conf to be packaged and installed, correct ?
