Debian :: Apt Wants To Auto-remove Most Of Desktop
Oct 16, 2015
Fresh Jessie installation with KDE desktop. Installed from Disk 1 of the dvd images. Can't figure why apt wants to remove this stuff. The only packages I removed from the base installation was iceweasel, and juk. I'd like to autoremove to clean out the amarok stuff but I'm afraid it will take all the rest with it. What do I do about this, and or how do I fix it? Does apt have a setting where if an app isn't used for x amount of time it deems it useless for removal?
Code: Select allCalculating upgrade...
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
 amarok-common amarok-utils apper apper-data ark cdparanoia cdrdao clamz dvd+rw-tools easy-rsa genisoimage growisofs gwenview htdig hyphen-en-us
 iputils-arping k3b k3b-data k3b-i18n kamera kate kcalc kdeplasma-addons kdesudo khelpcenter4 kio-audiocd kmix kopete kscreensaver ksnapshot libappstream1

I am using Ubuntu Maverick and I wanted to try the xubuntu desktop environment, so I installed xubuntu-desktop package from synaptic package manager. There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?

I'm new to Debian, and there's something I don't understand about the packages marked as automatically installed. They are supposed to be removed by "apt-get autoremove" if no other packages depend on them, right? Well, I've installed xserver-xorg-video-ati which pulled *video-radeon, *video-r128 and *video-mach64. I later realised that I only needed *video-radeon, and got rid of xserver-xorg-video-ati and the other two. The thing is... xserver-xorg-video-radeon is still there, even if only xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon-dbg depend on it, and neither are installed in my system.
Code: Select all$ apt list xserver-xorg-video*
Listing... Done
xserver-xorg-video-all/stable 1:7.7+7 amd64
xserver-xorg-video-ati/stable 1:7.5.0-1 amd64
xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg/stable 1:7.5.0-1 amd64
[code]...
I obviously want to keep *video-radeon, but I'm just wondering, why does it not get removed when I run "apt-get autoremove"?

The apt-get autoremove command, I use Debian 8 for some time now and I often install a package, test it for some minutes and remove it then. I noticed that in most cases (if not all, I'm not completely sure) all the dependencies that were installed with the package (mostly libraries, of course) stay installed on the system when I remove the package.
And there is no output of apt-get that there are unnecessary pacakges which I can remove with apt-get autoremove. The autoremove command does nothing.Before I changed to Debian, I used Ubuntu and there all the dependencies are removed with apt-get autoremove when I uninstalled a package.My question is now, is this normal? if there are fundamental differences in which packages "autoremove" removes between Debian and Ubuntu?

After installing Jessie, apt-get gives me a huge list of packages with the suggestion to autoremove them. Now, I've tried auto-remove once and was left with a naked Gnome, so I was wondering if there's another way to find out which packages I should keep and which I can safely remove. Is it safe to delete packages that cannot be found using the search function for the stable release? I checked them one by one here URL....How about linux images that won't appear in the above search?
linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.1-amd64
linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.2-amd64
linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.2-amd64
linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64
linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64
How about results shown by deborphan?

I installed aptosid ( ex-sidux), based on debian sid. It uses xfce manager.
On the desktop I have many icons ( like other patitions, trash, ..), I want to remove them, where to do it, they don't appear in the Desktop directory (they are not links).
By the way, I think, if I really understand it ??, xrandr replaces xorg, I can't find the file used by xrandr unlike xorg uses xorg.conf.

I am using Wheezy 7.9, Gnome Classic, gdm3 . I have two menu instances of Master PDF Editor, one instance in the Graphics menu and the other in the Office category. I have tried using Alacarte to remove one of the instances. Alacarte shows that the item has been removed but in fact it still shows up in the menu. The procedure I used was to open Alacarte as root user, delete the item, close Alacarte and re-start the computer.

I've installed Debian GNU/Linux, from a Testing NetInstall ISO, then after setting up the system, I've installed the KDE desktop.Well, I like to have a system with the applications I want, not the applications that the system wants for me, I mean, that's the point of GNU/Linux, isn't?
Thus I want to remove some applications from KDE, let's say KWrite. I know it's a good text editor, but Kate is way better, at least for me, and... I should have the authority to decide what applications I want on my system, I think you got the point.So I installed Kate, and when I try to remove KWrite, APT asks me to remove nothing but this applications: kde-baseapps kde-plasma-desktop.
I don't understand why do KDE forces me to get rid of the entire desktop... when I'm just trying to remove a single application, and a replacement it's already installed.

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet).Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

Is there a way in SuSE 11.1 to have the conventional desktop, instead the plasma desktop? I thought that installing KDE 3.5 will fix it, but I was wrong. I really don't want to download back SuSE 11.0, just to have my old desktop layout. SuSE developers should at least leave it as an option than to force people to install it

I recently started an installation of Debian Lenny. During the install, I accidentally chose to install "Desktop environment" when I meant to de-select it (I hit enter, which was obviously the wrong key to de-select) so what should I do now? Should I restart the install, and be more careful the next time the task selector comes up? Should I let it continue, and uninstall all the X stuff afterwards (and how would I remove ALL of the stuff installed with the "Desktop environment", 10GB hard drive

I know PHP auto removes stale sessions on it's own, but that doesn't remove them from the MYSQL table. So I was gonna make a cron script that ran once every hour that removed any MYSQL shopping cart item from the table if the original session_id that created it does not exist anymore.
From my understanding a session_id is an "actual" file located somewhere on the harddisk (is it not? correct me if I'm wrong), so I was going to do a simple check for each item in the shopping cart to check for it's original session file, if it didn't exist on the harddisk, then simply remove it from the mysql table.

migrating from windows to Gnu/Linux: familiar with Right-click >> Arrange-icons-automatically, while under my KDE & XFCE this feature is something I wanted.
This code is not mine: I only copied this from where I found, from the ubuntuforums authored by a member logged as user PGScooter, you may read him/her directly from here.
Procedure:
Copy the following code:
Code:
#make sure you change 'user' on line 4 to the username of the desktop you want to organize
use strict;
use warnings;
my $conffile='/home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0.rc';
open(CONF,"$conffile") or die "can't find the config file";
[Code]....
{if you run Kde you may replace that xfce4 to kde whatever is found in your current directory.
Log out. Log in as that user again. The icons are arranged this time. It worked for me automatically. I am running Xfce4 over a Slackware 12.2.

I have a home LAN server with Ubuntu Desktop edition 10.10 and I'm having a problem with remote desktop application. For now I have a monitor on that machine, but in the future it's gonna be only the box, without any periferal devices. When I try to log in via UltraVNC from Windows XP, on Ubuntu server a little window pops up, asking me to allow or refuse this "invader", so I click Allow and I really have full control on that machine. However, when I dont have any devices I wouldnt be able to click this Allow button, but will have to have full control. So, my question is how to autoclick this Allow button? Or when I try to log in the ubuntu machine, it would automatically give me full control?

I am using Fedora and trying to auto run a script soon after the unit boots to desktop. I found many suggestions and finally decided to use the Sessions->Startup Programs option (under System->Preferences->Personal->Sessions menu). I added my script in the Startup Programs with the command 'sh myscript.sh'. Now I have two questions here:1. When I use the command 'gnome-terminal -e myscript.sh', I get 'There was an error creating the child process for this terminal' message after logging into the desktop. Can any one tell if I am missing something here?2. Even if I use sh instead of gnome-terminal, I still want to see the script executing. In other words, my script has certain echo statements indicating the flow of the script. But I don't see any shell opening up with these echo statements showing up, after the unit boots to desktop. But the script was still executed with no problem

Set up a lab full of Lucid boxes that authenticate against the main university Sun ldap server and create local, limited, homedirs if they don't already exist.
The ldap server is freely accessible on our network and does not require authentication to do a query. Users will not be able to make changes on the ldap server from these workstations. I cannot set up homedirs of users manually - any one of 15,000 people could walk in and use one of these machines.
What I've got working so far: Authentication works, but when I log in through GDM, after a few errors, I get nothing but a blank desktop (with wallpaper and cursor). If I log in as a local user and su to an ldapuser I get assigned a home directory at /, which explains the errors; this kind of user can't write to /. I've seen posts on this but nothing that works for me.
The problem, as I've identified it: I'm using pam_mkhomedir to create home directories on first login, but I don't seem to have any way of telling pam_mkhomedir *where* to create the home directories. I've tried to use the nss_map_attribute in /etc/ldap.conf (like this: nss_map_attribute homeDirectory "/home/users/"uid), but my syntax is all guesswork - I can't seem to find anyone else trying to mangle a homedir this way.
Most either don't deal with the homedir thing at all, or if they do, they only cover nfs/smb shares.

How to make my GNOME desktop auto recognize the NTFS partition of the USB drive.
On command line I can do the following perfectly:
Code:
which results
Code:
All files permission on the drive is 777. I can read, I can write, do whatever I want.
But in GNOME Desktop environment, when the USB drive is plugged-in, the partition is auto-mounted with other options:
Code:
All files permission on the drive is now 555. I can't write to it anymore. I saw a post earlier having similar mount result, but this one is USB drive though.
So how to configure GDE mount automatically with my intended mount options?

Since I plugged in and then unplugged in the firewire port a video camera, I have a note in the bottom-right corner of one of the desktops. It says 'libieee1284-3".
It's not a serious problem at all, I can live with it, but if there was a way to remove this yellow square from my pretty desktop I would like to hear about it .
I tried clicking and right clicking on it; it does nothing except I can access a tiny menu with - apparently - enlarge, refresh and configure buttons. Only the configure button (a spanner) does something, it opens a "configure" box which does not have a "remove" or "delete" option. Rebooting does not remove it.
