OpenSUSE :: Change Gnome Desktop Icons Back To Previous Settings?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

Debian :: Debian Squeeze / Gnome Icon Themes Don't Change

Feb 8, 2011

I installed Debian Squeeze with Gnome today. I'm unable to change from the default icon theme. I can change themes, but the icon theme remains default.Things I've tried:

- I've made a new user account.

- .gtkrc-2.0 in my home is auto-generated, .gtkrc.mine does not exist.

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT include "/usr/share/themes/Darklooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" include "/home/haunted/.gtkrc.mine"

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT

- I've tried installing a theme into my /home/.themes.

- I've reinstalled gnome-settings-daemon.

- Tried changing themes then doing a full reboot.

- Cursed it periodically.

Debian Multimedia :: Both KDE And Gnome Won't Start / Change This?

Apr 9, 2011

I'm using Debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 (testing) for several years now. Initial installation was done at least two years ago, without any issues. I do keep my system up-to-date. However, a few months ago, after an apt-get update/upgrade/system-upgrade, I discovered that, if I try to launch KDE or Gnome, I only see a black screen and I actually need to restart my computer. On some cases the system even froze and needed to hardware reset, and run fsck in recovery mode after rebooting. Really very annoying... Since I don't use KDE or Gnome desktops (just a few applications depending on KDE/Gnome libraries), I didn't bother to figure out what is happening. However, others use my computer occasionally, and I would like to get KDE and Gnome working again. I purged and reinstalled everything that had to do with KDE or Gnome, even deleted KDE/Gnome files in my home directory, but the black screens are still there, everytime I try to start any of those desktops. Note that kdm or gdm don't even mention KDE or Gnome as available sessions, although all necessary packages are installed. I have no idea what to do to fix the problem.

Another question: I recently got rid of gdm because it is buggy and tried wdm instead. However, /etc/profile is not read anymore. Apparently, wdm does not use /etc/profile by default. Is there any way to change this?

Debian :: 8.3.0 - Can Change Desktop Environment After Install

Feb 17, 2016

I am new to Linux and I just installed Debian Jessie about a week ago. I have been tweaking it and learning the command line and all that, but I also have been reading and studying about different aspects of Debian that I was unaware of before I installed it. Because of my reading, I think that I would like to change my desktop environment. When I installed Debian, I consciously chose the Cinnamon desktop because I felt that the simplicity would suit my needs, but I have recently read about KDE and I think that it has some features that I would be interested in. Is it possible to change my desktop environment now, even though I have already installed Debian? If so, how difficult is it?

On a very closely related question, I do have an extra 60 GB partition just sitting there with nothing on it. As an alternative to the above scenario of changing desktop environments before I know exactly which one I will like better, I can make another installation of Debian on my free partition and run both Cinnamon and KDE side-by-side for a little while until I learn which one suits my needs the best.

Debian :: Change Desktop Install Into Server Without X11?

Mar 6, 2011

It's been awhile since I've posted.

I am curious as to the best and most practical way to change a desktop install into a server install. In other words, I want to get rid of X and KDE and all the extra software related to the two and have a purely command line interface.

I have discovered that having a GUI in a server context is kind of pointless, and when upgrading software requires a lot of time to upgrade the extra software related to X and KDE. I just want to clean it up and make it lean and mean.

Debian :: 8.2 Cannot Boot Into CLI (VMware 12 With Gnome Desktop As Guest OS)

Oct 14, 2015

I have debian8.2 installed in VMware 12 with gnome desktop as guest os.

It boot into gnome successfully. But it will not boot into CLI mode and recovery mode. While boot into CLI, It is stucked in a blank screen, no cursor, after long long boot log splash in the screen.

To boot into CLI rather than gnome, I just set default.target into multi-user.target for systemd. I checked the syslog for boot into CLI, found that systemd execute getty 1~6, but it seemed to no success log and it seem to no other log for systemd. Is it failed to getty?

I check the grapyical.target and multi-user.target in systemd, find multi-user.target is the only one target required by graphical.target. Multi-user.target can be execute successfully during boot into graphical mode, while it will not be successfully execute during boot into CLI mode. That's is so unpredicted. Is there something else I missed?
