Jul 20, 2010I want to make a rescue disc for debian such that if anything goes wrong everything can be restored to its original condition. whatever extra packages are installed they should also be put back. most importantly zimbra and its dependencies.

Debian Installation :: Remove All Sid Packages And Roll Back To Lenny?
Jun 7, 2010I added Sid to my /etc/apt/sources.list, so that I could install KDE4 (as described on some random KDE4/Debian web page). However, I now think that was a mistake and it would have been better to attempt to backport KDE4 onto Lenny. Over time, more and more sid packages have crept into the system to resolve dependencies, and now my system seems a bit broken; 'top' won't run, complains about missing libtermcap which is there, my cron jobs seem to be ignored and so on.
So given a system that is a mix of Lenny and Sid, what is the best way to uninstall all the Sid packages and then get back to a clean Lenny install? Is there some way that I can list all Sid packages, maybe to a file, then use that to tell apt what Lenny packages to install after sources.list has been updated to remove Sid?
I kept a log as the system was built, of everything that had to be manually set up after the debian installer has completed when I moved from 32-bit to 64-bit, so I could just do a clean install of Lenny then reconstruct the system from scratch. However, would much prefer to use the package management tools to revert to a clean Lenny.

Jul 22, 2010I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

Ubuntu :: Back-up Installed Packages For Total Reformat?
Oct 29, 2010I just installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 and though I like it an all, I'd like to put the 64 bit edition in in order to use all four gigs of RAM I have installed... To my knowledge, 32 bit computers should be able to handle 4GB RAM but I guess my address but is too small.
In any case, I'm developing a Ren'Py game and for both it and GIMP and a few other apps I could really use that extra gig.
Quick cut: I would like to back up the programs I've got installed so I can re-install them on the 64 bit version. Most of the things I've installed I've gotten from the Software Center, but for the things I've had to type into the terminal to install, well I haven't logged them anywhere so I'd have to dig up on Google again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Back To Original Packages After Upgrade/install?
Dec 14, 2010I just did a fresh install from 8.04 to 10.04 with separate "/" and /home partitions. I really wanted a new 10.04 system to start from scratch and rebuild it again & differently. Instead I got a really messed up system. Is there any way to change it to a fresh new 10.04 install. That nothing has been added to yet?
This is very important because on 10.04 my video card won't handle all the mods that I had on 8.04 and my system freezes very soon after I log on.

Mar 29, 2010I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

Jul 11, 2011I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this pst or not, first on this forum. I just removed Fedora Core 4 from my system and installed Debian Sarge with the 2.6 kernel. I'm a newbie. The install seemed to go fine, after it was done I actually logged in and looked around some. I then restarted to check to make sure that my boot process went ok and I could still get to windows. Worked fine. Then I tried to boot back into Debian. It hung. I rebooted and tried again. Hung again in the same spot.

May 17, 2010After installing debian 5.0.4 basic from first dvd, I extracted all other dvd images to hard disk and pointed /etc/apt/sources.list point to all these directories.
after refreshing using synaptic package manager, I got list of all 20,000+ packages, and did a
"apt-get -y install ......(all 20,000 names)". It failed due to some conflicts. So I used "--force-yes -f " option as well.
It went on for nearly two days to install everything. (in between due to power failure, something was done half way and was able to login to KDE boot option and see lots of software installed.)
After complete install - it shows a startup screen of Debian EDu - but fails to boot up.
Is there a way to install all softwares + all XWindow systems simultaneously?

May 16, 2011With my windows pc, system restore made regular back up points. i could revert to a point in time or restore the whole system from scratch. the only prob was if thoes files got a virus you lost everything anyway. Not so good ill admit.With linux, ive spent several hours setting up wireless, sound and games. i dont want to loose all that time if something happens. being new to linux i dont see a back up feature or a way to save the current configuration i have. id hate as a new user to make a stupid mistake and blow the system and loose all my hard work any suggestions? id like to back up the system as it is so i can restore /copy back this set up if possible. whats the tool to use? does it exist in linux?

Jul 17, 2010I plan to install Debian on a machine that will have no access to the internet but I would like to install some packages in it (such as build-essential). I was thinking of downloading them here and transfer and install them on the other machine at a later time but because of dependencies I don't know what packages I'll need besides of the ones I really want, for example: After the fresh install from the cd, I would like to install build-essential which requires g++, make etc... but is there a way to download all that instead of doing it manually? Since I don't really know when to stop downloading dependencies. I tried aptitude download but it only gives me the meta-package. I also thought of chroot to a fresh system, install the packages and retrieve them from the local folder where they get downloaded but I was looking for something less complicated.

Yet I would appreciate a simple overview about the process.Specifically, I would like to start with something simple: building a package with the Firefox 3.5.7 tar.gz pre-compiled binaries.If I understand correctly, the source files from Debian are modified in some way from the upstream provider, but my little Firefox project is not dealing with sources at all. The binaries are already compiled. So I'll appreciate a simple overview about creating a package from those Firefox binaries.
I realize the Firefox binaries can be installed as is, along with needing to create three sym links. That is not my goal. I figured starting with pre-compiled binaries will be an easier start into the Debian packaging process. Further, I prefer to install software with a package manager as that provides a system that is easier to maintain long-term.I suspect that an aide to my learning would be to extract the Iceweasel package and then draw similarities from that.
Debian :: Cannot Access Some Of The Tables Or Back-up Them?
Aug 15, 2011Recentrly my servers mysql has updated and now i have problems with my phpbb database. I cannot access some of the tables or back-up them. I did some research and founded that becouse of the update, my old my.cnf has been replaced and lost setiings for innodb. I founded the file, but i don't know how to make it work.

Debian :: Back Up Before Upgrade On Desktop?
Mar 27, 2011I am going to upgrade from debian 5.0 to 6.0 today. I have backedup my home directory by copying it to a external harddrive. There is no other files placed anywhere except for the home directory. Is there anything else i should upgrade that everyone does? Like back up the programs i have installed?
the OS has a partition size of 20GB and the home directory has 9GB of that.

Feb 22, 2010Running Debian Squeeze and when I try to switch between gnome and a system terminal ctrl-alt-f1(etc) I just get a black screen. Any thoughts? I'm using the radeonhd xorg driver but don't think that should affect it.

Debian :: Downloading Packages With APT?
Jan 10, 2011APT - it really has me mystified at times so I'm looking for an idiots guide on how to use it. I've googled and read the APT How to on the Debian site, as well as a lot of other APT pages, so I understand what it does and the command structure, but I can't seem to download one off packages from the Debian site.
I've managed to get the updates to work (ran an update the other day) so I know my source file is working (my source.list points to deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ lenny main) however I don't understand/can't figure out how to get single packages from Debian.
As an example I want to get the rsynch package which has a download page in Debian and my mirror in the source.list file can be used. However when I do apt-get rsynch I get an error message that says it can't be found.
Looking at the Debian package website it does say that the rsynch package can be requested from the subdirectory of pool/main/r/rsync/ at any one of the listed download sites (of which the site in my source.list file is one of those listed). Do I have to add the pool/main/r/rsync/ information to my sources.list file, or add it to the apt-get command?
