Debian :: NIS And Guest Accounts - Logged In On Two Different Machines ?
Jan 27, 2010
I'm running a network with a NIS. I want to implement a guest account on my network. The requirements are that the guest can log in on multiple computers at the same time and that the guest account's file are wiped out when they log off. The problem is that when guest is logged in on two different machines some programs (like firefox) will only run on one of them at a time. Is there anyway around this?
Also: I anticipate a settings nightmare. If guest is logged in on one machine and changes the desktop background then guest logs in on another machine will the background change in both places? What happens when the same file is written at the same time?

We have 4 servers having rhel 5.2. We have several users logged in on one of them. We have nis server/client running on them and have common home area mounted on all of them. Now we want to disable/block the accounts of the users who have not accessed our servers in last 2 months from today. What logic should we apply to do so? We were checking stat of .bashrc of each user but is not correct logic. We are going to write shell script for the same. We dont want to do anything in users home area or their files.

I have an encrypted /home partition but would like to set up a guest account for my brother. Obviously, encryption doesn't work so well when you give out the key so what I'd like to do is specify a different, unencrypted location as a home directory for the guest account so he doesn't need access to that partition. Is there a way of doing this?
I've got fedora 10, dual boot with windows, 2 hard drives, 1st is NTFS windows. 2nd is split into a swap, ext3 for the OS, and an encrypted partition for /home.

Have just installed ubuntu on virual disk. So now, as host machine I have - Windows, and as guest machine - Ubuntu. Such question, how to copy/paste texts between host and guest machines (into command-line, mc, etc.)? ps: I have tried ctrl+v and ctrl+shift+v (ctrl, shift - left buttons), no reaction at all.

I am new to virtual machines in general, and currently playing with the XEN-based VM in CentOS 5.5. Question: if neither virt-manager nor virsh (using "virsh edit <guest name>" and changing the name in the XML file) are designed to actually change a guest's name...then what is the recommended procedure for doing this?

I'm looking for virtual machine software that supports dual monitors on a Linux guest with a Windows 7 host.VirtualBox supports dual monitors only for Windows guests. VMware Player was extremely slow, so I gave up. I'm not sure it supports dual monitors, anyway. Can anyone recommend a product for what I want to do?

I've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal:
1.) Learn about network setups on Linux
2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network
3.) Configure my (virtual) network

I just installed debian 5.06 i386 130MB that I downloaded yesterday(Monday). My problem is that when an incoming ssh connection to this debian box is established, but nothing is being logged to /var/log/auth.log on this box. I've tail -f the auth.log which verified nothing is getting logged for ssh. The auth.log is showing activity, mostly root logins and logoffs, but no ssh activity.I understand that /etc/rsyslog.conf may control what gets logged. I had pastebinned this file on #debian but people noted that it looked fine.I have not made any changes to the system, like editing config files or anything. The system is essentially just out of the box. What else can I do to figure this out? Otherwise, I am pleased with how Debian installed on 2002 vintage machine, and is running in console mod

I got libgnome-keyring0_3.0.0-1_amd64 with my full-update with SMXI this morning. After that, the keyring wouldn't remember any passwords, and empathy wouldn't log into any accounts. I downgraded to 2.32.0-1 and everything works again.

I'm trying to use gwibber 3.0 in Debian SID for the first time but I can't add accounts. I can perform all the steps but the new account never appears in the account list. I've tried debugging the problem but I don't know much about python apps. It seems that some files didn't get compiled (*.pyc) after installation so when running gwibber it tried to compile them without success. I've run it as root so that they got compiled it but it's still the same, no surprise here.
Someone has reported a bug for this issue but no response so far: url

I can use the accents (tilde, acute, ...) normally when I am the root, but when I log into my user account they re not recognized in most applications (opera, emacs, amsn, python idle,...) although they work in other applications (terminal, vim, iceweasel...). I guess that would have a simple solution. Something is right in the root account and wrong in my user account, but I cant figure it out. My layout is USA International (with dead keys).

If there is a simple way to prevent accidental shutdown when the following situation occurs:
Sometimes, I log in on my father's computer to run some administrations' tasks (updates...). For that, I use SSH since I'm frequently far from my parents and what I want is to prevent a shutdown run by my father. Of course, he should be able to turn off by himself if nobody else is connected.
Molly-Guard allows to prevent distant shutdown, my request is a kind of complementary software.
Does anyone know a project which could fit with this request? Do you have simple ideas to write a short code I know bash, perl, python...

I'm configuring a fresh install of Debian 8 and I'm having a problem creating new user accounts, using XFCE.I'm using the console for setting new user accounts, without any problems yet when I log in the user accounts to check if everything is ready to use I get a persistent message from the system warning the session is in kiosk mode.I've went through several step by step guides I've found over the net, went to the XFCE wiki trying to find an answer for this, with no success. I've even tried deleting user accounts and recreating it but the problem persists.

on my netbook I've tried to make possible for my user to shutdown without needing a password. battery could run low when I'm not in front of it. Editing sudoers has allowed my user to shutdown the system, but Gnome still prompts me for the root password whenever root is logged in too. That's usually the case, because to avoid entering the root password multiple times whenever I need elevated privileges and not wanting to cache the root password, I keep a Root Terminal always open.

I have a local file server running Samba on Fedora 9. It's already configured and serves a few people without any problems. I am now trying to set up a new read-only share with the username 'guest' and the password 'guest'. However, with no success so far! If I log on as 'guest' with the password 'guest' like so:
Code:
su - guest
No problem. Once logged in, if I try:
Code:
smbclient //samba/share
I'm prompted for a password. If I enter 'guest' I get:
Code:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
If I enter nothing (null) I get:
Code:
Anonymous login successful
Domain=[RIVER] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.8-0.26.fc9]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.
1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2
2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)
3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...
4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel
5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.
6 - Open a root terminal and run
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare
* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *
7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.
8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)
9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.
10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).

Running Jessie 8.2 and Icedove 38.4.0. I just applied some updates and now Icedove only displays the number of unread messages in the folders.
Previously, it displayed the number of unread and the total number of messages in neat columns. Now it is a single number of unread in parens.
Is there any way I can get the display back to the previous format of unread# and total#?

I have 15 or so debian lenny machines, and a xen server that I would like to join to the windows 2003 AD domain controller. The main goal is I would like the windows / linux user names and passwords to be the same on each system. Only 10 or so users need access to the machines but the passwords sometimes are different. How should I go about accomplishing this ?
I was told that openldap may be a solution. But from what I've read about it sounds like its just a mimic or window AD and doesnt sync with it, at least natively ?
