Sep 17, 2009Forgot root password on fedora 10. Reboot into runlevel one and changed passwd and it said all tolkens updated. Typed exit and it didn't reboot and at login screen I logged in as other "root" and it didn't work with new password. So I redid the runlevel 1 and password change and typed init 6. It didn't work after that also. How to change fedora 10 root password if the old password is forgot?

Aug 13, 2010I have tried: booting into single user mode (using '1' and 'single' in my bootloader edits) and it still ends up kicking me to the 'myBox login:' prompt booting from a live-CD with no luck - seems my CD drive is hosed, or the system just won't boot the CD
This is a system I set up, literally, years ago, with no need to touch it. It was originally set up as a file server, running SAMBA. I am wanting to add CUPS to it, and possibly a web server if it will handle the load. Currently, it is running Debian 4.0 without a GUI.
My next step, if I can't get into the root account, is to install a new OS (and try to salvage the file shares that exist). I just would rather keep the install that I have, but I need to hack/crack or change my root password.

Can I login into ubuntu or change the root password. I didn't make any other user than the installation were asking me. If I try to reinstall the ubuntu, the setup will help me to choose the same partition (to overwrite on the previous ubuntu)?

May 5, 2010I recently started to use Ubuntu in VWware player on my windows-XP. I installed ubuntu 10.04 few days ago, It was working fine.
Yesterday, I compile a new kernel, kernel 2.6.33 in my vmware ubuntu 10.04. Everything went well till I did reboot. before reboot I use the command "update-grub" to make it compatible to the new kernel. BUT... after rebooting, I have a problem in loading a grub correctly. it gives me following message " [2.149136 ]kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" and I can not proceed further. I have my all data on it. I also tried to boot it from live CD but unfortunately, I can't mount the hard disk on it in order to get those data from my old Ubuntu set up.
Fedora :: Vmware Player On F14?
Dec 12, 2010Since installing Fedora 14, I have found that everytime I run Vmware player it goes through the compile sequence. It works fine after that. It should only compile if the kernel has changed. Anyone else with this problem? Any ideas what is wrong?

The other day I installed VMware Player on the system when the Kernel was 2.6.38.8-32.fc15.x86_64. On running VMware player after installing the kernel-headers and gcc files the program ran fine (I did not try to install the VMware Tools). I also have not loaded the guess OS as yet.
toady I did and update in which the kernel was updated. I checked to ensure the Kernel-headers were also updated for the latest kernel.
After rebooting the machine the running kernel was then 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64. I then tried to start VMware Player. It indicated because the kernel was changed it needed to install new kernel modules, OK, It open the module screen and then crashed.
The log says it can not compile Vmmon which is the first module. it does not go any further.
Tried to installed a new copy of VMware Player over the old one but this only resulted in the same error messages.
Any ideas on how to fix this.

Jan 3, 2011I'm new to Fedora 14, vmware player. After getting Fedora up and running in VMware player. The disk size was 2.7 GB. After three hours of working with it, the disk size has bloated to 4.3 GB. I havent added software to account for the near doubling in size. How do I reduce the size back to 2.7GB range or lower. Im new to Fedora and superuser controls. Im removing more software than adding software. Is this a VMWARE problem or Fedora problem?
