i am not talking about the network install, i am talking about the installation disk you use to install debian lenny, when i go to a mirror (my computer architect is i386) i see like more than 30 cd images, no different version numbers on each of them just the same version but with several disks, do i only need one or do i have to download them all
View 7 RepliesI down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?
I'm banging my head against the wall as I can't find a way to install the contents of the CD-26 image of Debian. I've downloaded the files and then burnt it to disk and Debian can see the disk as an ISO format, but I have no idea how to extract/install the files so that I can then use aptitude to load the program I want.
I've searched Google and it talks about Debian Installer, but I haven't got that (I don't think), and the CD doesn't load automatically at start up (even though the BIOS is configured to Boot from the CD drive first).
How to I install these other packages?
would have marked the last thread as solved, but couldn't find where to do it Got it up and running, dual-boot, and no problems after scandisk, and fujitsu helped out. Now I have XP and Debian lenny. Here's where the hard part comes in, for me anyways. Had to do install without NIC, install didn't find it. I have the driver disk for it, with a linux driver on it, but I can't find anything about how to use it.
The driver file has 5 files inside it. 1) Makefile 2) sr9600.c 3) sr9600.h, 2 readme's and a file containing some .png files. I can't find a substitute driver for the card, SUPERAL semiconductor sr9600, that may be already on the stuff I can get using aptitude, so what do I do with this driver...how do I get the system to use it? I NEED networking, a tutorial or some good advice,.. I've googled everything I can think of.
for a project I am working on, I need the same install configuration on every machine, and I'd like to have all the packages I need on one disc, with none of the ones I don't. I also need to use a non-standard file systems(jffs2,nilfs) as the hardware end of my project works on flash memory, and would like these two FSs to replace the typical magnetic disk based choices.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Debian Lenny on a friend's computer which is an older Dell workstation. The install went well. I delivered the machine last week, got it set up in there house and all was fine. 2 days later they said it crashed with a black screen and lots of words they didn't understand. I get there today and rebooted. X would not start but it ran a whole bunch of automatic self tests but could not recover. I was able to log in as root and run fsck. That made the necessary repairs. I was able to reboot and log into the KDE Desktop. Hopefully they don't break it again.
I asked them what they did to it to cause it to freak out like that and they had no idea. So, as to my question, what causes something like that? I know there must be a log file somewhere on the computer that will give me some insight into the matter, but I'm not sure where to find the file.
I have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI scored a Dell poweredge 6300 from a local pawn shop. It has the capability to boot from cd-rom, but apparently not with isolinux, which is what the debian installer cd uses. I was able to boot to UBCD411 (Ultimate Boot CD, which uses syslinux), but didn't see any option to boot to a CD (maybe I'm missing something here?). I tried using the boot floppy from this site. I didn't expect it to work (it's from the Woody era), and it did not. I got a message that says SYSLINUX ver.XXXX CBIOS boot failed. I went to [URL].. and looked for a boot floppy image for Lenny, but apparently it doesn't exist. I did however find the boot floppy image for Etch.
To be honest, even if I did find the Lenny floppy boot image, I'm not sure how to use it to point the system to the installer CD. So, I have two questions:
1) Does anyone know of a boot floppy image for Lenny, or if I could use the Etch boot floppy image?
2) How would one boot from floppy, then point the system to the installer CD?
System info:
(4) Xeon Pentium 2 processors 500 Mhz
(6) UltraSCSI hard drives
(1) SCSI cd-rom drive
(1) SCSI dvd-rom drive

I'm getting a bit tierd of linux right now.. I can't get the CD, with netinstall on, to start.
I've tried different harddrives and burned it several times at different speed and so on. I've tried to just i386 and amd64, both gives the same error:
isolinux: Disk error 32, AX = 42B0, driver 9F
The harddrives that I got is small 10-80 gb, so they are a bit old.. but they worked the last time I've tried to install (until I got a grub loading error)
I'm not sure what to do at all. Tried to search on google and here without finding something
I'm trying to install debian-6.0.2.1 from hard diskand it can't find my iso image wich is on the slackware partition.i downloaded initrd.gz an vmlinuz,added some lines to lilo.conf so that i can boot but then when it searches for the iso image doesn't find it .
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to upgrade my Win8/Wheezy 64-bit machine to Jessie 8.1 by installing from the amd64-bit netinstall iso image on a USB flash drive. I had done the previous, Wheezy, install on a disk partition that was whole-partition LUKS/LVM drive, with separate logical partitions for swap, root, and home.
Before doing the upgrade, I booted to the BIOS to ensure that my UEFI system had the correct, CSM and Legacy modes enabled in it, so that installer would boot using the non-efi BIOS mode.
Step one of the upgrade was to boot the netinstall and enter the rescue mode so that I could manually do the cryptsetup/LVM business. When I returned to the installer, I mounted the now-recognized logical partitions normally, choosing to format only the swap and / partitions.
During the entire process, I had to go into rescue mode one more time to manually mount the unencrypted /boot partition, along with my /home partition. I copied a backup of my old /etc/crypttab from the latter, and after returning to the installer, finished the install. That finish included installing grub on my hard drive's main boot partition.
Everything seemed to finish with no problems. However, when I try to boot the debian bootloader, I get tossed to grub rescue with the message that '/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod' doesn't exist. At this point I returned to the installer, mounted the /boot partition, and saw that there grub-install didn't create that an x86_64-efi directory at all. Instead, it had created an i386 directory. The exact name escapes me at the moment.
I *think* that my install was clean other than the last bit that was related to installing the bootloader. How to reinstall the bootloader in such a way as to make all of this work.
I have now almost completed my aim of using Debian and PClinuxOS on different installed hard disks. For PCLOS I use an On-Disk set of disks which I have installed on a separate hard disk which serves as a repository from Synaptic, which makes program install/remove very quick. Is it possible to do the same thing with the 5 DVD's for Debian lenny on another hard disk?

I need to install GRUB on my USB-drive. I've gone through variety of manuals and articles but I have strange errors during install.
1) Insert USB in my laptop.
2) My OpenSUSE automatically mount an USB-drive, so I unmount it

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.
I have a DELL D420 without optical drive and i want to install opensuse 11.3 on it, also i don't have an external Optical drive. I want to know if it's possible to install OpenSuse 11.3 from a Flash drive or Amovible disk, and how to proceed to do that.
PS: is it a good idea to install Opensuse on dell d420: C2D ulv 1.2, 1gb ram, 60 HD ? it it'll work well.
I downloaded OpenSUSE 11.2 x86. Recordered,ran. I selected language (polish) and chose "Install" (originally "instaluj ). Installer booted, but I can't install because "linuxrc" was ran. Linuxrc can't find install disk, repo. I'll install with local DVD-RAM drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHave burned a DVD of 11.4 64bit and am trying to install alongside Windows 7. The boot from the disk starts, I get a SUSE splash screen and initial menu. I check install source (F4) is set to CDROM. When I then select "install" the kernel loads, but then it goes wrong. Whatever I do I get "No repository found". It's almost as though, having loaded the kernel from the DVD, the installer can no longer see the disk.

He installed purchased version of Suse 8.0 server. Using KDE. (Don't know why he went this route. He is not setting up a server.) His problem is it will only boot from a CD. He can take out CD and it runs ok. A friend told me that there is a way to check the master boot file, but I do not know how to do it. I am learning trying to learn Unix/Linux programming. I can do some commands in terminal.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am installing a number of boxes with RHEL 6, using a kickstart file I made and put on a boot disk.I am having trouble, however, when using this disk. The boot loader recognizes my kickstart file, but when it prompts me that it can't find the RHEL distro on my disk, and that I need to insert the DVD that contains the distro, I cannot eject the CD. Button pushy, no ejecty. I tried a paper clip to open the drive, but even after inserting the distro disk this way, it doesn't see it. It's like anaconda is wrapped around the mount of the boot disk and won't let go.
There's nothing special I need to have in the kickstart file for this to work right? I have thought about putting an eject statement in the post section, but that isn't even used until the OS is installed is it? I can get around this by creating a distro DVD with my kickstart file, but I'd rather not do that, and use the kickstart/boot disk functionality as intended.
My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.
The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.
On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.
When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.
I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.
I have two questions:
- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?
- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?
You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.
i have been away from linux for a long while and decided to try it out again. i just received a fedora 10 dvd and went to install it.it wouldn't boot on either my laptop or pc?so i explored the disk and realised its a source disk?
1 = is the dvd disk any good to me?
2 = how can i install fedora from the disk or do i need to get another disk?
Alright, first I burned the image I download to a DVD, first DVD didn't work, but second one did, got to the installation process where it probes everything... and at the end it said "Repository Not Found"..So I copied the image to my external hard drive..And went to install from Hard drive...did the director of the image by just putting openSUSE-11.4-DVD... etc...because it already does hd:I had tried F: before, and it didnt work either..And yet again, I get "repository not found"....btw, THIS IS FROM CLEAN INSTALL< I HAD TO ERASE XP and the external is a NTFS hard drive with about 12 gb's free.

I'm limited to using my hard drive as there's no CD/DVD or floppy drives installed on the machine and BIOS does not support booting from USB.

From the terminal enter these commands
sudo mkdir /distro
sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`
cp MYLINUX.iso /distro/distro.iso
Now extract Linux_kernel & Ram_disk to /distro#
Open /boot/grub/menu.lst
#ADD NEW ENTRY#
title Install Linux
root (hdX,X)
kernel /distro/Linux_kernel
initrd /distro/Ram_disk

Creating the folder "distro" on root was easy and went smoothly. I can't seem to make the second 'whoami' command work, though. I copied-and-pasted "sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`" into the terminal. It asks me for the root password, I enter that and then get
chmod: missing operand after `holly:holly'

I didn't see anyone reply in the comments of that page saying they had trouble with it, so I think I'm just being an idiot. One person did suggest adding distro at the end on another page and it gets me

I downloaded and mounted debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso on my work machine's VirtualBox v5.0.12 to check out Debian stable/Jessie's installer and clean installation in case I need to do it soon. I like the new installer compared to 11/24/2011 on my old desktop machine. It is much nicer, fancier with its advanced options, etc.
However, I ran into issues with its "Select and Install" part when I selected desktop managers (e.g., KDE and Gnome) and continued. It failed as shown in [URL] .... images. Why? I tried again from scratch and same thing. If I don't select any and just select non-GUI stuff (e.g, SSH and standard system utilities), then it works but I want the pretty GUI stuff.
