May 20, 2010I have Ubuntu server 10.04 joined to a domain using Likewise Open. I can login using my domain credentials and have added my domain account to the sudoers file. Now that I've got it joined to the domain I want to add some samba shares and have domain members use their accounts to access them. However, no matter what combination of my domain name and the domain user or group I use in the valid users field it won't let me in. What's the proper way of inputting a domain user or group in the valid user field?

Ubuntu Servers :: Manually Forcing Rotation Didn't Generate Any Errors
Jan 28, 2011I have 1 Ubuntu server acting as a gateway / proxy and a bunch of iptables rules to log packets from each of these systems. This is done to monitor internet acces. The resulting log file grows to about 80 - 100Mb on a daily basis. I tried setting up log logrotate ( through webmin as well as manually ) to rotate this log file every night at 11:00 pm. However, the file does not get rotated. when i run logrotate -d /etc/logrotate.conf everything goes through fine. i get a message saying that the file qualifies for rotation and no errors.
If i manually force the rotation ( through webmin ) it happens. However, on its own, the log file does not get rotated. I am completely stumped. I tried replicating the exact same settings that are set for syslog rotation, and still no luck. All the other log files do get rotated at the appropriate time ( i have checked in the /var/log/ directory ), but this one does not. I thought it might have been because i had some prerotate and postrotate scripts. Manually forcing rotation did not generate any errors and the scripts ran without any problems. But even then, i removed those scripts, and still no luck. this is the config file for logrotate ( in /etc/logrotate.d/bcrl )

I updated the system just one day before this problem ( the second one ) surfaced, but i do not remember what got updated. is there any way to check?
Fedora Servers :: Get Gnome Spin - Puppy Didn't Edit Boot Record Very Well
Dec 16, 2009I want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.

Jan 12, 2011The scenario: We have an external server that runs HTTP/DB servers for out shop system. Then, there's our local, in-house infrastructure that runs a.. yeah... Exchange 2010. The shop system on the external server needs to send mails to customers (order confirmations, invoices, etc.). seing as sending them directly through the local MTA (Postfix) would cause mail delivery problems because of reverse DNS issues, i've set the Postfix MTA to act as a satellite to our in-house Exchange Server, so the Exchange sends the mail instead, giving recipient mail servers a valid reverse DNS lookup.
Now, mails sent by the (proprietary, uneditable) shop system are relayed correctly and sent to the target e-mail address. My problem is: Mails not sent by the shop system, but by our own PHP scripts which run on that same external servers, are NOT relayed properly. So the Exchange is fine with the mails sent by the shop system, but not the mails sent by our scripts. This is what i get in the mail.log: The successfully relayed mail sent by the shop system:

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A Raid5 With The Three New 1.5TB HD's?
Apr 15, 2010Here is what I have and what I want to do.
3 new 1.5TB HD. 1 used 1.5TB hd with 980MB of data. I want to set up a raid 5 with a hot spare. I have music, pictures, videos, and movies (About 2.8TB worth). I have had a mismatch of drives previously, 250GB, 2 320GB, 500GB, 2 1TB and now a 1.5TB all with data. I have removed the one 250 and 2 320s and put the data on the 1.5TB that is currently installed.
What I would like to do is create a raid5 with the three new 1.5TB HD's, copy the data over from the currently installed 1.5TB and then grow or add that drive as a hot spare. Or just add it and then add another 1.5TB down the road as a hot spare don't know for sure.
In addition since I have 2 1 TB drives, I could add 2 more (Good deals on 1 TB drives right now) and have a total of 4 1TB drives. Could I have 2 raid5's (4-1TB's and 4-1.5TB's)in two separate arrays? I really do not know if that makes sense or not but here comes LVM. I am tired of managing my HD space and since i have multiple folders (Movies, music, pictures, videos) and within the movies folder I have R, G & PG folders for the ratings of the movies. (Pwd protect the R so the kids can't get to it) So with LVM installed with the Raid5 I should be able to create my folders and just keep adding data and not worry about moving folders around when I grow the storage by adding new drives. Is that correct? Maybe someone could point me to a how to.
Also, if I create 2 arrays (And I need to know so I can order the 2 additional 1TB drives), then I could put all the music, G and PG content on the one array and all the R and spicy stuff on the other and password protect it.

Feb 10, 2011It's been years since I've set up a Linux machine and I am getting a "no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems" during a Centos install on a Asus P5BV-C/4L motherboard. I am assuming that there is a raid driver that needs to be installed, but when I went to the asus download site, selected linux/P5BV-C/4L and downloaded all of the available drivers, I keep getting errors saying "Driver disk is invalid for this release of Centos".
I take the zip file, extract it down to the .img file, burn it to disk and try to load it after running a "linux dd". Is this the correct way of doing it? Am I using the correct file?

What I want to do is this: Load into GDM as soon as Ubuntu finishes loading (I think I got this to work via the login screen config). As soon as it loads, I want it to run the command: x11vnc -safer -localhost -nopw -once -display :0 This way I don't need to issue that command over SSH anymore. Can I do this? Or is there a 'better way' to access the GUI. The machine is being stored well away from monitor/keyboard, so accessing it remotely is the way I want to do it. I'm not entirely comfortable working from the commandline so GUI it is.
