Everything was going smoothly until I got to the 'Configuring xen-tools and building our guest' section (two thirds down the page).
I installed xen-tools and then typed the following in a terminal window (as root):
xen-create-image --hostname=development-pv-guest --memory=2048mb --vcpus=2 --lvm=develop --dhcp --pygrub --dist=jessie
I admit PV is new to me, compared to simple HVM, so I have a number of questions:
1. Why the command not found error?
2. Should I be booting from the Xen option or regular boot option at the start up screen when creating the xen image? I've tried both and get the same error message.
3. I have Debian 8 (Jessie) installed on my system and I wasn't sure whether I should therefore make this the guest OS in my Xen PV. In asking this question I'm thinking in terms of HVMs - but I assume my Xen PV needs a guest OS of some kind? Or is my host Debian 8 already acting as a guest OS in Xen PV? I'm confused
4. If I do need to install a guest OS, is it better to go for an earlier version of debian - so as not to be so resource hungry?
I'm nervous about screwing up my host debian installation, so when I got the error message, did some research but found nothing meaningful. I don't want to end up having to reinstall my Debian 8 (base OS) ... again!

Jun 16, 2010I've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine.This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.
I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.

May 30, 2011I have lately been converting all my Ubuntu installs to Debian. Kind of like a revival meeting. Basically I am wiping the ~/.whatever files from the /home partition and saving any that might be handy later. Save any files from the / partition that I might want something from (/var/cache/apt/archives for packages installed, /usr/share/backgrounds and so forth). The last one I am working on is a little different. It is the first install (successful) install I ever did, Ubuntu 8.04, and it is ext3 on one partition. I did the above things as on the others but it was all on one partition. Fired up my netinstall disk for squeeze and installed on 2 partitions. One new one for / ext4 and the old partition not formatted, mounted as /home on ext3.
Did a base install with only the system utilities added by the taskel business at the end of install (like always). Rebooted to that install. Every thing seems to work at the basic level. My passwords worked, both for the text user login and then the root password when I ran su so that I could purge nfs-common (it has given me problems on every install for some reason). Came back here to my usual Debian testing install, fired up boinc and then the chroot environment for the new convert. Installed gnome-desktop-environment and some other things, all from a list that I have used before in just this manner.
Go back to boot to the new one, every thing rolls fine, get the GDM3 login, enter password. "Can't access ICEauthorization". Have to Ctrl+Alt+b out. Back here I check the /home/tom directory for that install and hit Ctrl+H and there are no hidden files. Run "dpkg-reconfigure -a" to no effect. Try adding my user again and that, of coarse dose not work because the user already exists. One other thing is that if I boot to recovery it does show the message to login or hit Ctrl+D but does not stop with a prompt. Shows a couple other things and stops. Ctrl+Alt+B to get out once and had to unplug once.

- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with an image and text, the image is not printed (the space is blank).
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with just an image, it's printed great.
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Impress, the images are not printed but the text is printed great.

Feb 23, 2011I have a pdf file (nasm documentation) that used to be displayed perfectly with xpdf, but now all code example lines remain blank. On the terminal I get repeated lines such as:

I tried to figure out the problem... the same problem occurs with both evince and okular. However it does not occur when opening the same file under root (tested with xpdf), so it seems to be some permission problem. I tried searching on the error message but couldn't find a working solution.

Apr 7, 2011I do not know if this is possible, but I have a laptop in another country that I visit quite frequently. I wish to re build it in Ubuntu from the image of a mcahine I have here such that when I set it up I need not go on line for updates and installed apps.
A couple of reasons for this.
Internet in this other country is by land line and VERY expensive and slow
It would be useful if it were an image as I am happy with the install on the laptop I have here,, and do not want to spend an age on my hols configuring and installing and playing about... Just install Ubuntu from my CD and then the image to create the same machine.....

Oct 30, 2010Ok, have a system with 10.10 with the things I need, I installed this OS on a laptop which has a 40gb drive. 32-bit version. Before installing ubuntu i had Windows7 and had split the drive in 2 partitions (20/20) and currently have an image of the Windows7 OS in the 2nd partition.
Anyway, when installing ubuntu i used the 1st partition that has Windows7 OS and made 3 partitions out of it:
-12gb partition for /root
- 3gb partition for /swap
- 5gb partition for /home
In the Windows world i use Ghost utility(DOS version) to image my single Windows7 partition completely. This works fine.
Since in ubuntu we usually create multiple partitions,
1-what utility can be used to create an image of the partition ?
2-do you JUST create the image of /root ?
I really want to create an image now that i can then restore if something happens to the OS and be back in business quickly without reinstalling ubuntu from scratch.

Dec 23, 2010Ok, so I have installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61p, setup the wireless adapter (why is this so difficult?) and installed a few applications. I do like the look of openSUSE but would like to check out a few other flavours. With my Windows 7 (can I say that here?) machines I can create a system image and a system restore CD with a fair amount of ease. Is there a similar process available for Linux?
