Ubuntu :: Gnome Makes Resolution Much Bigger

Jun 14, 2010

Why gnome would make my resolution so much bigger than it actually is (2x my native). I can actually use the other half of my screen. I have to scroll over to the left half, and then I can work like normal. If I wanted to have a black screen, I can drag the courser over to the far right and have my screen be entirely black. I cannot open anything in the black part of the screen.

General :: Resolution - Everything Is Bigger Even The Login Box After Booting

Jan 14, 2011

I have ubuntu 10.10 newly installed on my machine and have been exploring everything. I'm new to linux and have heard about it for years so now I'm giving it a test drive. The problem is while playing around I've done something to the screen resolution. Everything is bigger even the login box after booting. When I open anything up it's to big to see all of the selections. How do I readjust the resolution back to normal? The only thing I did this morning was download a nvidia driver for 3d to work.

Ubuntu :: Awn Makes Gnome Boot Into Gnome-icon-theme

Jan 6, 2011

I have avant-window-navigator in my startup appplications. This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: OpenOffice Makes Video Refresh And Gnome Crash?

Jun 30, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files. When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

Here's my environment;

Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM

I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;

Code:

(II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode
(II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): "CRT:nvidia-auto-select+1440+0,DFP:nvidia-auto-select+0+124"
(II) Jun 30 12:17:43 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode

I've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.

Ubuntu :: Font Or Resolution Before Gnome Is Loaded

Sep 10, 2010

when you first start up your computer it is in command line, before the gui has loaded. Just like when you type ctrl alt f1 it goes to a similar screen. in both those cases my fonts are twice the size they normally are. I've used ubuntu and slackware, installed them both on different occasions, and the font in the terminal was always small and looked like what i came to see as normal. but now they are stretched out and twice the size. i am wondering if there is a command or way to change either the font or the resolution or the display settings of the terminal.

Fedora :: Can't Undo Wrong Resolution In 10/Gnome?

Mar 28, 2009

setting a resolution that my monitor can't handle, and now I can't figure out how to get back to a setting that my monitor can handle. When I first made the bad setting, the screen went black except for an "Out of Range" message in the middle, and wouldn't let me see anything to put it back. I ended up going to a text screen with a <Ctrl-Alt-F1>, logging in as root, and rebooting. Now, I can use all of my other user IDs (root, KDE test, "email only," etc.) just fine, but if I log in to the one with the bad res. setting, it just blacks the screen and I have to reboot again. The xorg.conf file doesn't even have any options for setting resolutions any more, so there's no way to explicitly disallow the one I set, and "deleting" (renaming) xorg.conf didn't help.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Blinking LXDE And Gnome - Fresh Install - Graphics Resolution Is Wrong?

Apr 7, 2011

I've borrowed a copy of 11.4 DVD install disc from someone at work, everything went fine install wise. Except Grub taking control, which I didn't ask it to, but easy fix with yast, problem is firstly my graphics resolution is wrong, but I'm trying to work that one out myself as it always seems to be happening with distros I use on my machine. The weird thing is my desktop blinks! Every 10secs or so the whole screen goes blank and then reappears? I thought it might be the wrong refresh rate, but that's at 60Hz which is correct, would it be the resolution problem?

My hardware:-
P4 2.8
1Gb ram
Geforce FX 5500
Dell 1703FP monitor

I was trying to running diagnostic's from Opensuse, but the blinking was getting on my nerves and I'm not familiar with a non Debian based OS......yet! I've got compiz and all running on the hardware in my Ubuntu install after editing the xorg.conf, could I simply copy that to my Opensuse install?

Ubuntu :: How To Make Folder Icon To Appear Bigger

Jan 24, 2010

I've made some of my own icons in Gimp and saved them as .pngs. The problem is, when I use them they always appear smaller than the system default icons. Is there no way to make them as the same size as the system icons? I read somewhere that GNOME (which is what I use) uses .png .svg and .xpm. I am only able to save as .png with GIMP, is there a way to get .svg and .xpm extension capabilities with GIMP?

These are the icons (only two):
1. HJ-Split Folder
2. Blood Frontier Folder

Is there maybe a specific way to make folder icons that I am not following? Using Ubuntu 9.10, Desktop edition.

Now I want to download some updates and it says it doesnt have enough free space (it only needs like 500 megs so I must have a real small partition). Is there anyway to fix this or do I have to reinstall?? If so, how do I uninstall and do it right?
