Ubuntu :: Xorg Eating A Lot Of Memory / Makes System Freeze

Apr 7, 2011

Xorg takes 700+ mbs of ram, then in matter of hours it fills the swap and then system basically stops responding or whatever. And because its constantly allocating, it degrades perforamce horribly.Interesting thing is I never had this problem before, recently one of my ram modules broke (2+2 GB) and now I have only one, but it still doesnt explain the memory overuse. Windows 7 works perfectly fine.

Ubuntu :: OpenOffice Makes System Freeze

Mar 22, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to use OpenOffice 3.1. If I run OpenOffice, after 10 minutes or so, the whole computer freezes. Even if I have shut down OpenOffice it still happens. Only answer is to turn computer off and on again. I read some other people's posts listing the same problem and as a result uninstalled Open Office and then installed it again. I also uninstalled Compiz. Neither of these seem to be the solution. I have just installed Lotus Symphony and there are no problems with freezing and so the issue is definately with OO and Ubuntu.

I then on further advice uninstalled the bundled Ubuntu version of OpenOffice and installed directly from the OpenOffice website. The problem still remains. Next thing I tried was to uncheck autosave feature. The above problems only happen on my desktop. I also have an ASUS EEE Netbook running Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook remix. This is fine - the problem does not seem to affect the netbook. I would really like to continue to use OO - I like it a lot. Unfortunately this freezing issue is making it unusable.

Debian Multimedia :: Xserver Eating Memory?

Nov 21, 2010

I have installed Debian Lenny today from netinst cd. It all went good, hen I installed some basic utilities, daemons and libraries like dbus, hal, libgtk2.0, libasound2, alsa-utils, htop (for checking system load). Then I installed X.org with commandaptitude install -R xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-video-intel xinit xterm twmI used -R to pull less dependencies. When I ran startx X Server started, and I got on twm. But when I checked on htop, my memory usage was 175MB, and before starting X Server it was only 25MB. Why is X Server using so much memory on Lenny? I also have Debian Sqeeze on a different partition, it uses so much memory with all gnome services running+ iceweasel and amsn.

Server :: Can't Figure Out Which Processes Are Eating Memory

Nov 6, 2010

I'm running several SHOUTcast server instances and a WowzaMediaServer instance on a CentOS machine. I'm experiencing a memory leak problem, but I can't figure out which processes are eating memory.

TOP command reports as follows:

[Code]...

Something misterious to me (I'm still a Linux newbie) is that TOP reports a total of 7.5GB used ram but very small percentage for single process (0-1%). Memory consumption starts at 1GB/8GB after reboot and in three days running gradually increases up to 8GB. I'm practising with Linux, but I still miss a lot to understand what's happening on my system. For instance, are there linux kernel logs saved somewhere that I can look at?

Ubuntu Installation :: Odd Fix For I8xx Chipset Xorg Freeze In 10.04?

May 18, 2010

Now, this works for me for reasons I'm not going to try and pretend to understand. I only know that this works (for now) for me without reverting to the vesa driver as detailed in [URL]... I'm using the intel 855gm chipset on an old dell inspiron 700m laptop (really, I just need to buy a new laptop ). After updating to 10.04, the laptop froze to a blank black screen on boot (after grub). Using Workaround A in the link above got me to some boot code or sometime the Ubuntu splash screen before freezing, so I figured Workaround F was the way to go. Of course I've since then learned that AccelMethod and VideoRam are moot. BUT I made a typo while editing my xorg.conf file, which gave me the "Linux running on low graphics mode" (or whatever it says). I chose to boot anyway, and everything works fine. Videos, 3D graphics, everything I've been able to test so far. If I take out the text in the xorg.conf file that can't be parsed, I'm back to the freezes.

Ubuntu :: X Freeze And Incorrect RAM Memory Showed Up

Feb 1, 2011

I currently have installed 2 GiB RAM memory on a Dell laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 release. Today, as I was playing kmahjongg, suddenly my whole screen became black with a small " _ " symbol in the top left corner. My cursor showed up, however I wasn't able to use it. Inputing something with keyboard or trying to enter in tty didn't worked, so I restarted the machine with the power button. Now, when I check the gnome-system-monitor, it shows up that I have 1,8 GiB RAM memory available, instead of 1,9 GiB how it used to be.

General :: Nvidia Driver - Proprietary - Xorg/KDM - Some Games Freeze Sometimes

Apr 22, 2011

I have a problem that pops up with some games, sometimes: sauerbraten, lugaru, and nexuiz being the ones that pop to mind.

The problem is that when the game starts/loads the mouse "cursor" in the game will not work... the thing is frozen. The "fix" is to jump to a virtual terminal, via alt-ctrl-1, and restart KDM, then I log back into the session and everything is working swell.

This problem does not occur in Osmos, World of Goo, Warzone 2100, or the Linux Ryzom client.

I thought about adding an explicit /etc/init.d/kdm restart in my /etc/kde4/kdm/Xreset file, but that seems too draconian.

This has been a recurring problem on several machines with several 7000, 8000, and 9000 series Nvidia cards running under the proprietary driver, on both 32-bit and 64-bit AMD processors ever since Lenny and up through Wheezy. And it occurs on the following desktop/windowing environments: KDE4.4, icewm, fluxbox, blackbox, E17.

I would guess that it's a driver issue or a driver+xorg configuration issue.

PS: Please don't suggest that I should use the open source driver.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Radeon Drivers Causing XOrg Freeze With 3D Graphics?

Dec 31, 2009

I'm having a few problems with XOrg freezing while playing World of Goo (not the worlds most intense game for graphics, but seemingly too much for my rig). I initially posted on the developer's forums, but they said a full X freeze wouldn't be the game. Testing with BZFlag got me a full Xorg freeze even quicker than with WoG. Later I even tried glxgears to see how well it ran and even that froze the system! My only way of recovering is SysReq-REISUB.

Specs/system details:

2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (E6600)
2GB RAM
Radeon X1950XTX using the open source drivers
openSUSE 11.2 (64-bit - patched up to date and without an xorg.conf)

[code].....

So, is there a fix for the huge instability with 3D graphics, or am I stuck between a rock and a hard place with the options of outdated official drivers that may not work with the latest kernels (and would need manually rebuilding even if they did) or flakey open drivers that are guaranteed to freeze at some point, it is just a matter of when?

I have 4 gigs of ram and xorg goobles up 70+% in a matter of an hour or so. I'm using the fglrx driver as it seems the radeonhd one doesn't recognize the firepro 3700. Can one only have a single KDE4 version on the machine. I would like to be able to swtch back and forth between 4.1 and 4.2 in order to troubleshoot without all the downloading and installing in yast.

Ubuntu :: Computer Makes A Buzz Sound On System Shutdown And Restart

May 3, 2010

For some time now, my laptop makes a quick but loud buzz sound when I shutdown or restart it. Muting my sounds doesn't fix it. Before, it didn't do this. It just started one day and got worse till it happened everytime I shutdown or restart.

Going to preferences > sounds > changing sound theme to no sounds helped a bit and after doing this, it doesn't happen all the time anymore. This is quite disturbing especially when I'm in libraries. What worries me the most though is that it might affect my speaker.

I'm using Karmic btw.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS System Freeze On Logout.

May 28, 2010

My partner and I share the computer, so we are normally both logged in.

When we come to turn the computer off, one of us will log out then the other shuts down (to have a clean shutdown), but when either one of us uses 'Logout' the system just freezes, no response, nothing, have to turn the machine off via power button.

We can 'switch user' fine, and everything else appears ok but log out fails, I did try reporting a bug on this, but seems to have got taken over with people with dual screens / SLI cards, taking it over and its not the same thing.

I get the 'impression' its a graphics driver issue, I'm using the 'recommended' Nvidia driver (am at work and can't remember which version sorry).

Ubuntu :: System Freeze During Upgrade?

Jul 14, 2010

I'm putting this in general, because I'm not sure if many of the specifics are relevant.I have an everex cloudbook which I purchased from eBay with hardy herron on it.I finally got around, today (I've had it for a year), to installing netbook remix 9.10 with a usb key I had also purchased from eBay.Now, during the upgrade (using update manager) from 9.10 to 10.04, the system appears to have frozen.(desktop frozen, no response to keyboard or mouse). Now, I'm not sure if something could still be happening inside there, and if it would be a good idea to let the machine site overnight before rebooting it. Frankly, it happened once already, and I rebooted, and update manager just took up where it left off once I logged in.

I have not determined what's causing these freezes. It's not a new machine, of course (everex, afaik, doesn't even exist now), so maybe netbook-remix is too taxing on the hardware? I installed xfce to get away from the bloated netbook-remix graphical menu garbage, which did seem to allow the system to run faster. Anyway, the real question here is, while the interface appears frozen, could the upgrade still be developing under the surface? (I hear a fan running in there. There is no hdd to spin, but flash memory, so I don't know if the fan is any indication of internal activity). Would you wait to reboot it? (update mgr indicated 4 hrs remaining to upgrade, in the installing upgrades phase, not downloading, appears it froze during "Running post-installation trigger install-info"). Or just reboot it and see what happens (get update mgr to start again?)? The system never froze on me with hardy. It was pretty quick and snappy, in fact.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 System Freeze After Update

Jan 28, 2011

Running Ubuntu 10.4 32bit (only) on my system with ati graphics card. I just ran a software update, and I believe a new kernel was installed. When I rebooted, I saw the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the system froze up and the screen went completely blank. Thinking it was a graphics issue, I tried to press escape to get into the grub bootloader. However, when I pressed escape at the proper time, the system just rebooted.

Thinking that grub was broken, I used a live cd to purge grub from my system and re-install it. When I rebooted, I got the same initial problem: I get the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the screen goes black and the system appears to be frozen. Again, if I press escape to try the grub bootloader, the system just reboots.

Ubuntu :: System Freeze - What Checks To Do?

Nothing too major here but today I had a few programs open and was doing a bunch of things and suddenly the system froze.

Are there checks that I can do to see if everything is ok?

I had to turn the power off and re-booted and everything is fine, or rather, seems to be 100% fine - but more out of curiosity Id like to see if there are some checks that I can do.

I think that ubuntu creates a log of activity if I am not mistaken?

Ubuntu :: Freeze On System Restart 10.4 LTS / Solution For This?

May 31, 2010

I've recently installed 10.04 LTS on a desktop PC so I can use it as a Zabbix monitoring machine.

I fresh installed and all seemed to be well but after a few restarts the system suddenly refused to boot anymore. The BIOS splash screen comes up and then a cursor blinks on the screen for a couple of seconds and then... nothing. The keyboard and monitor both go unresponsive and nothing happens.

I can hear the HD spin up and it isn't making any weird noises. Also, booting from the CD works and I can see and work with the HD so I'm not convinced that this is the problem.

In fact, I actually did a fresh reinstallation of 10.4 onto the machine and started from scratch. Again it ran fine for a few hours while I was setting Zabbix up. After a couple of restarts, again the freeze on boot.

I ran a HD scan and everything seems fine. I've also switched the HD over to the second IDE connection in the box just in case...

Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a bug? Any ideas on how to workaround it? (Short of going back to a previous Ubuntu version)

Ubuntu :: Disk Operations Freeze System

Jun 19, 2010

When I do some copying of files, or any background disk activity with file reading (transcoding a movie, uploading a big file to FTP, virus scanning) all computer becomes so slow, that I hardly can move my mouse, not to mention any productive use. I have SATA HDD, and Intel Quad CPU. I took measures to be sure it is not CPU or memory resource problem. Gentoo, Fedora, Windows don't freese that much on file reading. It is not a filesystem problem, or HDD, cuse I tried exactly this partition with other OSes.

Nice has a minor effect, but is is not enough, and I can't always start Nautilus with another nice level when I want to copy a file. What can I do to lower the priority of disk operations globally, and make apps to share disk thoughtput equally, not the one to occupie the disk until it finishes?
