I am considering switching from Ubuntu to another distro.
Is it possible to crossgrade from Ubuntu to Debian rather than reinstalling? Has anyone ever done that before? Are there any instructions for this anywhere?
I know of 3 at least so far Sidux and GRML and DRBL are there any others that are based on stabel or sid? or what? frugal as in like puppy, tinycore, dsl, etc nomadic like, usb, hd, etc?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIm using xfce desktop environment in debian. I find that I can not see the desktop when using Ctrl+Alt+Tab to switch window focus. I modified /usr/share/xfce-mcs-plugins/shortcuts/defaults.xml and added Ctrl+Alt+Tab shortcut to trigger a terminal command "wmctrl -k on", then i could see the desktop, but failed to switch window focus. Also, I failed to solve this problem by editing /usr/share/themes/Default/xfwm4/keythemerc Could anybody tell me a solution that you should be able to see the desktop when switching window focus, just like in win7?

Running Jessie with Xfce, and I hear that KDE already does this...? I would prefer to stay with Xfce though, and have tried making a UDEV rule and script, taken from the last part of this thread: [URL] ....
At first it worked perfectly, but now for some reason, only Chromium gets resized when I plug/unplug the cable. HDMI output is correctly activated upon cable insertion, but when taking the cable out again, the desktop resolution remains the same (larger than my laptop resolution), so the panels etc. are invisible.
I frequently find myself accidentally switching desktops when I use the mouse scrollwheel, because the cursor isn't over a window at the time. I'd like to disable this behaviour, but I can't see any control for it in KDE System Settings.

I am no longer working on the Linux-machine directly, but I'm using Windows puTTY to get a terminal-session. Within that puTTY window I want to switch (or maybe create first) several sessions between which I can switch arbitrarily. I have read about using Ctrl-Alt-Fn, which doesn't work, most likely due to the puTTY interface. I have tried chvt n, which doesn't do anything either (or that it seems). I have tried "bash &" and got bash in the background, which I could call forth using fg, but then had to stay with that and couldn't switch anywhere. Only option was "exit". So, what's the correct way to get several sessions in that puTTY window and switch between them?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn accordance with directives - possibly misunderstood - I have reconfigured the Debian "locales" package; I changed the installed locale from en_US.ISO-8859-1 to en_US.UTF-8 and left the default locale for the system as "none". So far so good. In my ".bashrc" file, I have an entry for "LC_LANG".
If this entry is set to "en_US.ISO-8859-1" all my texts are readable on the console but I get warnings like: Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale If I change the LC_LANG entry to "en_US.UTF-8", I no longer get these warnings but the screen-display of Midnight Commander (mc) is a real mess. And even man-pages are no longer able to display hyphens (-) correctly.
Anyone know how to make a distro like Pinguy OS? How do I rebrand it and add stuff like Pinguy OS. Or should I base it on Pinguy OS and remove stuff I don't want in Pinguy OS.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm going to move from Linux Mint (Debian Edition) to Debian on my Laptop (3 user). The current setup is LMDE-Cinnamon, with 4 partitions; /, swap, home and data. All the important data lives in data while home is used for preferences only.
Am I right in thinking that preserving the data partition is as simple as not formatting it during the installation?
And what about home? Obviously this now contains a lot of irrelevant stuff (Cinnamon settings for example) and many programs will be in different versions...
- Just keep it (after all the irrelevant stuff should not do anything bad?)? And if so how do I tell the installer to do this?
- Format and restore the relevant preferences manually from the backup?
- Format and have everybody set up their preferences as needed?
I'm new to the forum and actually to Debian as well. Have been running Ubuntu for the past few years. Just setup a small Dell laptop to use as a Squeezebox and Print server. It's been up 6 days without a hitch as far as serving music to the squeezebox and printing. The problem is that it loses it's static IP, so as long as I look it up and change the radio Squeezebox and printer definitions around on the clients everything keeps working.
Does anyone have any ideas?If the connection drops for some reason and the system has to re-initialize the connection, shouldn't it use the /etc/network/interfaces file and get back to the static IP that it is configured for?If anyone has any ideas of why this could be happening or have a solution, I would really appreciate the help.
Im running Jessie, and have run into issue with my laptop sound card.
If is shutdown the laptop with the headphones plugged in, and remove them while its off, system wont recognize they are not there any more and is probably sending sound out to this output. To get the sound out to my laptop speakers I need to plug the headphones while the system is up, and remove them again. Only then will the output device work properly.

I cannot get to type in romanian letters (just a standard US keyboard layout that has those letters mapped to the puctuation keys next to Enter) when switching from US to RO. Here's what I have in /etc/default/keyboard:

I can switch between the layouts, as fbxkb indicates, but instead of being able to type in the said letters, I get the punctuation marks you would normally get on a US keyboard.Yes, I have restarted after configuring the file mentioned above, and yes, I was able to use this layout properly on my last CrunchBang install (which I had to wipe and reinstall unfortunately).I'm on CrunchBang Linux, with Debian unstable repos.
I had debian 7 with GNOM,XFCE and LXDE woking fine. After I upgraded it to debian 8 (the DE mentioned also upgraded to e newer versions) I started having problems with switching between US and RU keyboard layouts. It now behaves as if I have two US layouts and one RU, so when I press CTRL+SHIFT several times the layout changes as follows: US-RU-US-US-RU-US-US-RU etc.
This happens in all the three DEs installed. If I exit a DE using CTRL+ALT+F1 to the command line the layout switches normally. So I guess something wrons is with DEs.
My /etc/default/keyboard file reads as follows:

I need to use three keyboard layouts EN, UA and RU. By default I can switch between them using selected keyboard shortcut with following pattern: en→ua→ru→en→ua... This works perfectly, but all multimedia keys now not recognized by xev and as result they does not work. I know that I can use xmodmap to map keys, but maybe same result can be achieved by fixing some of the newly created files or setxkbmap+xkbcomp command listed above.
I upgraded a wheezy box in qemu to jessie (without systemd!) and now I didn't get an output from the console to a hostterminal using curses.System and grub starts with terminal output, but after around 6 to 8 lines of output the terminal gets black. As far as I found out it seems that the init process switches to graphical output. I tried out all found kernel options from nomodeset up to nofb,Are their other options to stop switching to framebuffer and graphical mode.

In Debian 7 I always was able to copy and paste passwords from text files if I was asked for an input, but now the textfield for password input locks the whole system and I can't do anything else before I have supplied the password. Is there any way of restoring the old behaviour to make password input forms (like the request for GPG key passwords in Evolution) just being an addintional app-window instead of an input request, that locks everything else? I want to be able to open the proper file with the login data when prompted for it.
I know I could theoretically solve this issue by using a general system wide main key which would supply all individual login data, but I want to memorize some often needed phrases by actually typing them when I need them. I just want the possibility to open text files for copy and paste when I'm prompted for a password if this is something I don't even want to remember.
So I'm trying to change the primary click on my touch-pad to left-handed with xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1". it changed successfully, but there is one functionality I'd like changed. The touch pad itself changes to secondary too, but I want it to remain as primary.

What I'm looking for:
- Debian Based
- KDE 4.X
- Ideally it would still be able to use debian archives (ie like sidux)
- Updates less often than sid, so you aren't a long way behind if you miss a week, but often enough to still have up to date versions of software.
I need to reinstall my distro, MEPIS, but--mostly just because I feel restless--I'd like to try another Debian-based distro. It has to be Debian-based because I'm comfortable enough with apt-get that I don't want to learn another package management system; and I want to avoid Ubuntu and distros based on it, because I've long since decided I don't like the decreased user control in Ubuntu. What are my choices? If I want to leave MEPIS and don't want Ubuntu, I don't really know what there is other than Debian itself. I don't know if I feel like tolerating the supposedly greater difficulty of Debian, but I would otherwise expect to feel at home in it, since MEPIS is based on it. And does the Debian Project still make a version small enough to fit on one CD?

I'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.
I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.
Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....
I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:
- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this
nominate a disastrous distro from past or present that was simply AWFUL and what exactly was so bad about it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
Is there any easy way (i.e. command or file to view) to find out what distribution I am running? I know that my /etc/apt/sources.list has entries for stable, testing and unstable but I hear that (as of the 30th) "stable" has become Sarge. So if I performed an apt-get update then an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday should I assume that I am now running Sarge?

I have been unlucky searching Google and this site concerning this and hope that someone on here has either done this before or could point me in the right direction. I have a computer on my network that I want to use as a local repository for apt. I've got the set of Debian Lenny 5.04 CD's and would like to know how to put all of the packages from those CD's onto this computer and then use it as a local source for my Debian computers to get packages from. The CD's appear to hold all of the packages in the folder /pool if that helps at all.
