Debian :: Wired Network Disconnecting When Idle

Jul 29, 2011

I am a newbie when it comes to linux, but know a little (the little bit of dangerous stuff).I have set up a home web server for when I am testing website using PHP, mysql and other funky stuff. This is a reflection of my production server as far as I can with my limited knowledge.I am also using this box to learn more about the Linux operating system and I doing this slowly. Before I installed the GUI (Gnome) I was using a text based server, this was working fine and running absolutey fine and never disconnecting. This has been fine and working 24/7 for around a month.

At the weekend (just gone) I ran the following at terminal
# apt-get install gnome

This gave me a GUI so I could try some other things.

When the computer is idle the network card seems to drop the connection, Im trying to see after how long it does this. I have seen this work fine after an hour, but after a night, the network has been dropped. This is a hard wired connection to the router.first time I thought the PC had froze so rebooted the PC, but the second time, I plugged a mouse into it and noticed the the network icon had changed, after right clicking on it, i noticed that It had dropped the connection. After clicking the "reconnect" option it is back up and running.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Breaks When Idle

Feb 27, 2010

I'm having a problem where the wired network wired network (eth0) disconnects when the connection is idle for a while (usually tens of minutes). It works fine every time I boot up, but eventually it dies, and I can't ping the machine, or ping anything from the machine. ifconfig shows that it still has an IP address. Running ifdown/ifup causes it to work again. I intend for this machine to be a server, so I can't afford to go restart it when I need network access. sudo lshw -class network gives me this:

Debian :: NetworkManager Applet Shows No Network While Connected - Wired Network Device Not Managed

Oct 30, 2010

I'm running Squeeze and I'm looking 3 days now for a solution in some weird problem. The NetworkManager Applet shows that there isn't connection although I am connected. The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says

"Wired Network Device not managed"

While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.

Debian :: Wired Network Connection Stuck On Connecting

Nov 3, 2015

As a random thought I purged the firmware-realtek package and rebooted. Ethernet works fine now??

Fresh Jessie installed this morning with KDE. Wired worked fine during installation and initial boot. Reboot after package installation and only wireless is working right now. I did install the realtek firmware as part of my normal package list.

This is /var/log/syslog when it stopped working, and hasn't reconnected since. Cable is fine as it was working perfectly with a live Ubuntu shortly before I installed the system with Debian.

Debian Installation :: Wired Internet - Won't Find Any Network Adapter

May 17, 2011

I just installed debian, durning the installation i opted not to connect to the internet since the large network cable was in the closet and i did not feel like standing up. Now i have finished installing and plugged the network cable in, expecting it to "just work", this is not the case. What needs to happen before the wired network connection starts working? also, the lspci output, appearantly it won't find any network adapter. I suspect this is the fault of my lazyness.

Debian Configuration :: Stop Squeeze Auto Using My Mobile As Wired Network?

May 25, 2010

I have Debian Squeeze AMD64 bit release. It finds my wired ethernet connection and ues itfine, although nothing shows up in the top right corner under the networking icon.

When I plug my mobile phone in (HTC S620) it always uses this as the main internet connection and then even if disconnected wont use my wired connection until I reboot.

Is there a way to stop it doing this or at least have my wired connction as an option so I can just click to reconnect to my ethernet connection?

General :: Keeps Disconnecting From Wireless Network?

Sep 12, 2011

I'm running Arch Linux on an Acer laptop and my wirless connection doesn't stay up. After a while it disconnects, and when I try to reconnect I get stuck with a "Waiting for authorization" message. I have to retry several times before getting the connection stay up for few minutes. This happens with both networkmanager and wicd. The strange thing is that the iMac that sits next to the laptop connects fine, and when I use my laptop within the university wireless network it works normally.

EDIT: I've tried to connect manually following the steps

iwlist wlan0 scan
wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.2 - 3G USB Broadband Modem Keeps Disconnecting

Jan 23, 2010

I am running a 3-G wireless USB broadband modem, and connecting with Network Manager, but I keep getting disconnected when idle after 5-6 minutes. I am used to using Kinternet to connect with my 3-G wireless USB broadband modem, and setting it up in Yast / Network / Modems, but was not able to configure my modem there (for some mysterious reason) so ended up using Network Manager instead.

What's going on here regarding YAST being unable to configure my modem (even when Network Manger is disabled). But my main problem at this point is that my connection times out after about 6 minutes if I'm idle. This is a big problem for me because I type slow and frequently get disconnected while posting on message boards. Where are the idle time out settings are for Network Manager? I can't seem to find them.

Ubuntu Networking :: Apache2 And Localhost - Network Manager Kept On Messing Around And Disconnecting

Mar 14, 2010

a while ago, Network manager kept on messing around and disconnecting me etc. I attempted to setup a static network (wired) and since then, everything worked fine. I also have apache running and have had no problems with that. I know there were some apache auto updates this week but I have been doing no dev work. I went to check out one of my local sites to do some work yesterday and there was just nothing happening.

I checked everything with apache, it is all running etc. I have stripped back the conf files to be clean and fresh and netstat is showing apache as listening on 127.0.0.1:80 as it should for a single default site that I have on there now. BUT if I try to ping localhost by name or by 127.0.0.1 I am getting "Destination Port Unreachable" Since I have been trying to fix this, I have been trawling the internet to try and clean up my network setup from scratch (I have also had problems with https sites that has turned up to be the MTU setting on my eth0 interface) but to be honest I am not sure exactly what should be set between ifconfig, route, netstat and apache. should I be able to ping localhost independantly of running apache2 (i.e if it is stopped) or would a successful ping rely on apache working correctly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mobile Broadband Keeps Disconnecting, Network Manager Remains Silent?

Apr 18, 2010

I have a broadband mobile modem iCon 225 (Option) with SiMobil provider (Slovenia). I run ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I connect to the internet without problem. After a few minutes, the modem lights start signaling that there is no connection, but the network manager shows connected status. I have to reconnect the network manager to regain connection. After about a dozen times of reconnecting like this, I have to reboot the system, as it won't connect, even if I unplug and replug the modem.

I've noticed these frequent disconnects have started a few days ago. I did experience disconnects in the past, but as nearly often as this. I can't attribute disconnects to activity/inactivity, as they seem to happen no matter what I do.

Debian Configuration :: USB Wifi Adapter Frequently Disconnecting

May 20, 2015

Using a USB ISO, I recently installed Debian 8.0 Jessie (64-bit, Xfce DE) to a new computer. I usually lose my Wifi connection after 1-3 minutes when donwloading/uploading at around max. speed 4 Mbps/512 kbps. Sometimes it will last 15+ minutes.

When lightly browsing it can usually stay connected for 15-30 minutes. I have to disable and enable Wifi using NetworkManager to connect again. If I remember correctly, there were problems with the Wifi connection even during the installation of Debian.

This Wifi USB adapter works fine on my old computer with Debian 7.7 (32-bit). No problems with the Wifi connection yesterday on my old computer during 10+ hours of activity.

This Wifi adapter also works fine on this new computer when I boot from a live USB (Rescatux 0.30.2) downloading and uploading at max. speed for 1+ hour.

I already tried some suggestions I found online, but they didn't work:

* changing Wifi channels between 1, 6, 11 in my router settings
* changing WPA-WPA2 to WPA2 in my router settings
* ignore IPv6 in NetworkManager
* change probe_wait_ms from 500 ms to higher value by adding Code: Select alloptions mac80211  probe_wait_ms=1000 or Code: Select alloptions mac80211  probe_wait_ms=3000 to /etc/modprobe.d/mac80211.conf and rebooting
* disable Power Management for Wifi adapter (not supported)
* ...

I can also post the output of commands from Rescatux or my old computer if needed.

Output of commands on Debian 8.0 64-bit (I edited out some info, MAC, ...; not sure if that is important):

Fedora Hardware :: HP PSC 1200 Series Over Network - Printer State Idle

Dec 4, 2009

F12 64 bit machine, connects to a Windows share to which a HP PSC 1210 is connected through a USB connection. Printer is set to share, nicknamed "Asterix". When the printer is set up through F12, I select under Network printer "Windows printer via Samba". I browse, find the printer, and click verify. The printer is accessible. Then I finish the installation, ordering a test print. Here the strange things start happening (attached some screenshots to back the story up).

1) No error messages appear that I can find. No cups-errors, no other errors pop up on the F12 machine. The print appears and disappears from the "Document Print Status (Asterix)" window. Only on the Printer Properties page do I see something strange: Printer state: Idle - procession page 2.
2) In the Windows machine, I also can't find any error messages. The print appears in the Printer list, and stays there. The printer comes to life, checks its cartridges, rolls some wheels, and then decides to do nothing more. When I select the print and click on Properties, the default priority is 1, but when I move it up to 99, nothing changes. The only strange thing here is, that the document, according to the Windoze machine, has 0 pages, yet is some 20MB.
And nothing ever happens.

Things I think it's not:
Firewall issue. The print obviously slips through to the other end.
Faulty driver issue. Directly from the Windoze machine, and if plugged into the USB of the F12 machine, does it print perfectly fine.

Debian :: Load On Idle System

Nov 2, 2015

I had noticed that my workstation (running debian testing) is having a constant load of about 0.9 (+/-0.1), even while the system is completly idle.The system starts with a normal load and then goes up to about 0.9 within a few minutes and then will stay there forever (well it can get higher, but never lower). This is the load graph after the system runs some time: URL....

I have tried everything I know to find the cultprint but there is no cpu usage and no io usage. I even have disabled the desktop and still have this problem.Also I have tried booting an older Kernel (4.1 and 3.16) with no difference in the load.Here is some information about my system:

Debian :: Hard Drives Stay Active / Idle

Dec 28, 2015

I am trying to switch over my NAS from Win7 x64 to Debian 8.x Jessie. I have run into a few issues with the power management. When Idle my NAS should be consuming 25W, however it was consuming much more. The more hard disks I mounted, the higher the wattage.

I have followed a few tutorials but that has only been a partial succes.

Code: Select all # hdparm -C /dev/sd[b-y]

/dev/sdb:
 drive state is:  active/idle

/dev/sdc:
 drive state is:  active/idle

/dev/sdd:
 drive state is:  standby

/dev/sde:
 drive state is:  active/idle

/dev/sdf:
 drive state is:  standby

All the drives can spindown but they are not doing that now that they are mounted.

hdparm:
Code: Select all/dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG_HD103UJ_S13PJ9AQC12015 {
apm = 127
keep_features_over_reset = on
spindown_time = 60

[Code]....

Now there are two suggestions I found but both I was unable to implement.

The first suggestion was to mount using "noatime". However I do not know how to rewrite fstab because I am using ntfs for now (at least untill I get it working).

Code: Select all# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
#
/dev/mapper/bugattidebian--vg-root / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1

[Code] .....

Not sure where to add the noatime there...

Also I am using samba on all those drives. This guide suggested a code change but the example does not line up with my configuration script.

Fedora Networking :: Fedora 13 X64 Keeps Disconnecting From Network

Sep 29, 2010

I've seen many threads of this type, but I didn't see anyone simply say what the problem is. There's got to be something happenning to make it disconnect, and then something else makes it so it can't re-connect.What I get is that it connects for some time (maybe a short time, maybe a longer time) but eventually it just disconnects. When I try to re-connect wpa_supplicat log says simply it's trying to associate with the AP; it's associated with the AP; and then it's disconnected: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys

It is a home-built with AMD64 and a D-Link DWA-160 A2 (Atheros AR9710) and Netgear extreme 300 router AP. The router log shows it is in fact connecting for a short while only to be disconnected at my computer's request.This is Fedora 13 out of the box (sort of!) except that I have the development repos and the updates repos and the RPM fusion repos installed. I have NM applet running. I use one called simply "network", and also one called "control network devices". but they all lead to the same result that it can't reconnect. If I play with it enough doing any variety of changes I can eventually get it to reconnect, but there's no telling what action was the successful one. I just think it reset whatever was bothering it. But, as I saw another thread describe, if I delete ALL network connection definitions and reboot, it will find the network and it will connect. But sooner or later I'll be back to where it disconnects.So, does anyone actually know what the major malfunction is? It should have been identified and qualified and quantified by now so that there's a simple write-up of cause and fix. But thru all my googling I can't find anything definite. If anyone has some good answer please post it so we all can benefit.
