Debian :: Squeeze Failing To Hibernate?

Jul 30, 2011

I've had a problem trying to hibernate, sleep doesn't work either, when I try it starts to hibernate but then the screen flashes and when I move the mouse I'm returned to my current X session. I see the following in dmesg

PM: Device usb10 failed to freeze: error -2
[  682.481822] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Starting disk
[  682.798713] Restarting tasks ... done.

Apparently this notation points to a USB root hub, I have a USB 3 capable MB and I saw few mailing lists suggesting this was a bug but I can't find a fix, anyone out there resolved this?

cat /proc/version: Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-35) (dannf@debian.org) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP

Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze: Use Hibernate Function On Fluxbox?

Jan 28, 2011

I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze.

I use Fluxbox as the window manager in X Window. I installed hibernate packages and gnome power management. I set the idle time at 30 minutes using the gnome power management program. It doesn't suspend at all. The monitor only shuts off during idle.

So, I logged in as root, started X. Without .xinitrc gnome desktop manager launched. As I clicked shutdown, it showed a dialog box asking hibernate / suspend / restart / etc. And then, I chose the [hibernate], the system shut down and came back to previous status when system restarted.

Which gnome program does control hibernate / suspend?

Is there anyway that I can control hibernate / suspend in command? I just need to make a little script and assign it to a launch key so that I can suspend the system when it's on idle.

Debian Configuration :: NFS Installation Failing In Squeeze On ARM (kirkwood)

Mar 22, 2011

I have trouble setting up NFS on Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-kirkwood armv5tel GNU/Linux) running on a Sheevaplug. After some digging and googling I found that the NFS server is (probably) not properly installed.

no rules in iptables or hosts.allow or hosts.deny. Fresh OS install.

apt-get install --reinstall nfs-kernel-server

generates this output:
Setting up nfs-kernel-server (1:1.2.2-4) ...
Stopping NFS kernel daemon: mountd nfsd.
Unexporting directories for NFS kernel daemon....
Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon....

[Code]....

It could be related to this bug [URL] but I wonder if the fix goes to the arm-branch as well?

I have never had any trouble setting up NFS before.

Debian :: Failing To Boot After Lenny / Squeeze Upgrade

Jun 11, 2010

I've done the ordinary sources.list update (lenny to squeeze) and Code: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install dpkg apt aptitude.sudo aptitude full-upgrade However, udev failed to install, and I used..Code: touch /etc/udev/kernel-upgrade and did full-upgrade again. Everything was going fine, I went through several package configurations and suddenly, after 30-40 minutes of "Unpacking Setting up." I just heard two system beeps and got an error similar to a kernel panic. The SYSRQs did nothing. Did a hard reboot.I got two kernels in GRUB now. + the GRUB2 chainloading option. Used this one and got Code: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block It's all the same with the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel kernel panic. Using the older kernel didn't fail on the boot up, but showed many UDEV related errors and logging in was impossible - all I get were segmentation faults. Forgot to mention it - my FS is Reiserfs

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze: Suspend/hibernate Resume Fails With Radeon Graphics

Aug 6, 2010

I am running Squeeze on an older Compaq EVO laptop with radeon graphics.

A few months ago, after an upgrade, suspend and hibernate stopped working. The suspend or hibernate worked fine, but the resume just hung with a black screen. I finally got around to looking into it and found a workaround.

The workaround is to disable Kernel Mode Setting for the radeon. This can be done by adding the boot parameter "radeon.modeset=0" or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf so that it includes the line "options radeon modeset=0".

If you are interested in the details, you can search for problem reports related to radeon kernel mode setting.

Debian :: Cannot Resume After Hibernate

May 21, 2015

My system cannot resume after hibernation. I have done all as described here [URL] ...

My have set up swap file "/swap_debian".

I have 3 partitions: sda1: windows boot partition. sda2: windows 8.1. sda3 : debian

I have the only linux distro installed: debian.

I have read lots of web pages. I have managed to set up suspend 2 disk. After dancing 2 days at the computer the system still cannot resume. I am getting "clearing orphaned inode" msgs while booting, and when booted to ram was not recovered.

Swap file is 4000 MB, RAM is 3860 something MB

My current grub is:

Code: Select all# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
#   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

[Code] ....

And yes, I did update-grub.

My current /etc/uswsusp.conf is:

Code: Select all# /etc/uswsusp.conf(5) -- Configuration file for s2disk/s2both
resume device = /dev/sda3
compress = y
early writeout = y
image size = 1855258869
RSA key file = /etc/uswsusp.key
shutdown method = platform
resume offset = 31606784

My current /etc/fstab is:

Code: Select all# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

Debian :: Hibernate Is Not Consistently Resuming

Jun 29, 2015

Although it's worked very consistently in the past, since moving to the newer kernels (3.16 or 4.0) on strech/sid, resuming from hibernation seems to randomly work -- sometimes it loads the image from swap, but other times it simply does a fresh boot. To troubleshoot, I've increase the size of swap and then updated 'fstab', the initramdisk, and grub -- but still no reliable behavior...

Debian :: When Suspend And Hibernate Screen Goes Black?

Feb 26, 2011

I am having some pain with my new Squeeze installation, I am not sure if I am asking to much of it or it is an easy fix.

Firstly my system is laptop which I regularly plug a second monitor into. The video adaptor is an ATI HD4550 mobile.

My problem is that when ever suspend or hibernate my system, and even sometime when I boot up the screen(s) are just blank, although sometime they don't, it always happens if I suspend by closing the lid of my laptop, and only sometime happend with through Gnome is go ->System->Shutdown->Suspend. This is really annoying.

Another issue which I think is connected is that as I said I have a second monitor (most of the time) and when I boot up then it works until I log in, then a message pops up say the configuration can not be applied and it revert to Mirror mode or it does this thing where it places the second screen inside (virtually) the built in Laptop panel, it will not let me fix this through the monitors dialog just displaying the same message. I can fix this by doing

invoke-rc.d gmd3 restart

This gets as far as killing Gnome them it prints an error the to console, at which point Imopen a new terminal by ctrl+alt+f2 and
invoke-rc.d gmd3 stop
invoke-rc.d gmd3 start

then it works fine and even remember that I set the secondary screen to be the primary monitor through xrandr.

I tried install fgrlx drivers instead but it didn't really fix the issue, so I removed them.

Debian Configuration :: Suspend And Hibernate Do Not Work At All

Sep 6, 2011

I've been running 6.0.2 amd64 stable since release day and recently have noticed my suspend and hibernate do not work. Normally I have transmission running and have set it to not enter sleep mode while torrents are active. However today I have not had transmission and was wanting to see if the sleep mode options would kick in. So I have set my display to "sleep when inactive for" 5 mins (this works perfect)
I have set "put computer to sleep when inactive for" 10 mins (this does not work at all)

When I try to manually test suspend my display flashes black for a few seconds but remains backlit, then asks me to log back in
When I manually go into hibernate mode my display turns off, pops back on for a second and in a terminal says something about a usb device (something failed but it happens so fast I cannot read it)

Debian Hardware :: Keyboard Freeze Hibernate

Oct 6, 2015

I am Debian Sid user and have some issues with my keyboard. I installed Debian some months ago and my laptop was always plugged on the external screen with external keyboard and mouse. For the fist time I took my pc at school and notice that when I close the lid (hibernate) then open it, I can't use my keyboard because of freeze. The screen turn on but the keyboard is dead. I have to close the lid few time and suddenly it work. Never face this problem before because with the external keyboard there is no issue.

I installed on the another HDD, Fedora, Mint, openSuse and the problem is the same.

I found some tuts like
- Open gksu gedit /etc/default/grub
- Find the line : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
- Change it like this : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash atkbd.reset"

Debian Installation :: Create Bootable USB Failing

Feb 11, 2016

Every time I try to create a bootable USB on my sid boxes, it comes out corrupt. I'm trying to use a multi-arch netinst iso so I can back up my tablet. Anyway, I use

[code]
# cp debian-8.3.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso /dev/sdf
[code]

And it won't boot, so I checked the drive with gparted on my desktop, and get some errors about invalid block sizes and corrupt partitions. When I try fdisk, it lists an EFI partition as I would expect, and then another partition with the right size, but its listed as type empty. I also get some invalid size errors there. This happens with an older iso I have successfully used in the past. When I run fdisk on the ISO file, I get the same errors as the USB drive. Here's the output
[code]

daniel@frakenstein:~/Downloads$ sudo fdisk -l ./debian-8.3.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso
Disk ./debian-8.3.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso: 556 MiB, 583008256 bytes, 1138688 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos

[Code]...

I think my issue is with the message about 2048 vs 512 byte block sizes. I tried setting up partitions on my drive and just copying data to them from the iso. This makes the BIOS recognize the USB disk and it tries to run the bootloader, but fails since the symlinks are messed up copying that way. I've tried a few different boxes (all running sid) and I get the same results on all of them.

Debian :: UFW Failing To Deny Incoming Pings

Feb 3, 2016

I'm unable to get the "Uncomplicated Firewall" (UFW) to deny incoming pings. I've set it to deny incoming. Yet when I ping it, it responds.I'm using Debian 8.2 jessie KDE fresh/clean install with all updates.Below is the terminal output from a simple test (I've added an extra line feed between the commands for clarity):On a Debian 8.2 computer -- I install UFW, enable it, check its status (deny incoming), and get the Ethernet address:

Code: Select allroot@Computer:/home/user# apt-get install ufw
.... (long output -- no errors or warnings)
root@Computer:/home/user# ufw enable
Firewall is active and enabled on system startup

[code]...

The Debian computer with UFW active is responding to the pings, when it should be ignoring them.Rebooting the Debian computer doesn't fix the problem. This setup is very simple. I'm using all UFW defaults. This is a new Debian 8.2 install (clean) with all updates.
