Debian Hardware :: Lm-sensors On Dell Studio 1557 - Thermal Zone Jumps Up Quickly
Feb 23, 2010I just got a dell studio 1557 with core i7 processor. I have heard they run warm and suspect this one is no exception but am having a hard time monitoring the temps. When doing acpi -V i can see 2 thermal zones (0,1) with the first being 63C and the second always staying 26.8C. When I am doing a lot of processing the first thermal zone jumps up quickly. First, should that be the processor temp? Secondly, any way to get more accurate readings with lm-sensors(sensors-detect can find no monitoring items).

What happens if the MySQL cluster management fails?
I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.

Sep 9, 2010Initially, Debian detected my M-Audio soundcard right off, and things were going great, until I tried to get a Logitech webcam working. Got video going, but no audio, so I installed cheese, alsa-base and alsa-utils, and played around with settings according to copious forum threads dedicated to the problem of Linux and webcams, all to no avail. Then I had NO SOUND, until I did a alsa-conf, which detected and (re)set my M-Audio card, until reboot, then again, NO SOUND. Settings were not saving through reboot.
So I purge removed alsa-base and alsa-utils, hoping that things would magically revert to pre-webcam experiment. Still no sound. I have given up on the webcam idea; I'll use my XP Pro laptop for that. But I need sound on this Linux box. Oh and when I'm playing ....., etc. the soundcard itself is making chatter noises to the beat of the music. This soundcard was working perfectly before I started the webcam debacle, so it's not a hardware issue.
Debian Multimedia :: Web Browser Not 'Saving' Downloads?
Feb 13, 2011This is more times I have encountered, with my browsers - Epiphany, Iceweasel,. GNU/Linux Debian SID. Though it is not consistent - on and off. I don't know how to recreate the environment. But though it says, it is downloading but when I go to the folder/directory, it's not there....this is frustrating as sometimes my download takes a while to find out that after it download, nothing is there. litterally nothing.Maybe it's in a temp folder but I don't know where to look for it -- (Epiphany).

I have done all the obvious things like setting the browser.tabs.warnOnClose, ...warnOnOpen, browser.warnOnRestart, ...warnOnQuit to TRUE. I get a dialogue box when I exit asking if I want to restore my tabs when I restart and I click "Save and Quit" but then when I do restart... no tabs

Mar 15, 2016I did an installation of amd64 testing with KDE 5 three days ago, and I noticed that my session is not restored upon login. I have this option checked at my kde system setting.

I did notice that files in ~/.config/session/ are created, but apparently not read upon login.
I tried to send a reply to the relevant bug 796062 but the email bounced back.

Debian Hardware :: Monitor Can't Go Into Power Saving Mode
Dec 27, 2015I've recently changed to Debian from Windows, it's a really great adventure so far, but I have one problem. So as I see you can set your monitor into "Blank Page" after 10 or any minutes to save power, like in Windows. 10 minutes passes, without any movement my monitor's led turns into orange and the monitor turns off, that's great, that's what i want.
But after a few seconds the led turns green (like when it's on), and it brings up a little box : "Power Saving Mode" (just like it did after 10 minutes), and it turns off, and then stars again from the beginning . And this goes on repeatedly until a move my mouse to get back from "Blank page" state. (It's like the monitor tries going into power saving mode, but it gets always a little bit of power, to show that text box, and start all over.) So what can I do? I use debian 8.0 "jessie", and my monitor is a LG L1750S(with Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT).

Debian Configuration :: Network Not Active On Boot
Aug 26, 2011I just did an apt upgrade and for the most part everything is looking good. However when I boot up I have no network connection. Here is the result of trying to ping google: connect: Network is unreachable
I can fix it easily with a simple sudo dhclient eth0 but I was hoping someone would be able to suggest a more correct and less annoying solution. I have uninstalled network manager. This is a desktop computer with an ethernet connection and DHCP. I do not need anything fancy.

Jan 12, 2011I use Debian Squeeze and I'm experiencing a problem that did not occur in Lenny. The app numlockx is capable of turning my numlock on and off, but it can not change my keyboard led status.
For example, if my numlock is off and, consequently, numlock led is off too, when I run "$ numlockx on" the numlock starts working just well, but the led remains off. The same happens if numlock/led is on and I run "$ numlockx off", the numlock stop working just as expected, but the led remains on. it seems numlockx 1.1-10 (Squeeze version) can effectively change numlock, but it can't change keyboard led.
Debian :: Hard Drives Stay Active / Idle
Dec 28, 2015I am trying to switch over my NAS from Win7 x64 to Debian 8.x Jessie. I have run into a few issues with the power management. When Idle my NAS should be consuming 25W, however it was consuming much more. The more hard disks I mounted, the higher the wattage.
I have followed a few tutorials but that has only been a partial succes.

Now there are two suggestions I found but both I was unable to implement.
The first suggestion was to mount using "noatime". However I do not know how to rewrite fstab because I am using ntfs for now (at least untill I get it working).

Install Debian 7.6 as follows

I have a couple of questions....
1. Does the data above indicate everything is running as it should?
2. What does this command tell me about swap? "/sbin/swapoff /dev/sda7" I read somewhere it should be run on 64-bit system but not sure what it does.
3. Is the command "cat /proc/swaps" the best way to determine if swap is running ok?
4. Can I share this swap partition with another distro, e.g. Ubuntu or Xubuntu? as I would like to multi-boot for testing purposes.
Debian :: Fast Mouse Scroll Up / Down Changes Active Window
Aug 12, 2015Fresh install of Debian 8.1, have not changed a single setting anywhere. Was scrolling in the web browser and noticed that if I scrolled up or down fast enough the active window changes. Using kde as the desktop environment. Also this has nothing to do with the browser as it happens with anything I have open. Heck trying to scroll in console and having a document open just flips between the two of them. Only way this does not happen is if I scroll slow enough.

Apr 23, 2011My Debian server is used by people to set up ssh-tunnels for use as a local proxy ( on their remote machines).Since only the tunnel is setup, and no shell is used, I can't use "who" to see which users have an active ssh-tunnel on my server, but I would like to have an idea about who is active etc. I think I should be able to determine this from the auth.log file, but then I would have to use some script to determine what connection is still active. Is there an easy way to see what users have active ssh-tunnels on my Debian server at any given moment?

Dec 24, 2010Last month I found an old Seagate Hornet tape drive (STT20000A) with 2 TR-5 tapes at a thrift store. After sitting on a shelf at my place until last week I put it in an old system and installed Debian 5 on it. After a long time of working on it and never finding any useful help newer than 2007 I'm about to put it on eBay. So, here's a few questions:
Can this work in Debian 5 or should I put 4 or older on the system? If I put older linux on it, could I still get ide-scsi module working? apparently it has be obsolete for some time. The main problem is that it locks up the system when I try to write to it.

Feb 28, 2016I've been working on building an LTSP server for diskless booting. I have a tftp server that's booting the system. I followed the steps on [URL] .... to build the LTSP server.
I had to make one change from the guide. I have a cisco router that's acting as the DHCP, I'm not very familiar with Cisco IOS so instead of playing with that, I decided to modify the default file on the PXE.
I commented the kernel append line and added the following instead

I'm mounting the nfs as a rw file system for now. I'm planning to make it read only once I have it working the way I want. In addition to this, I also chroot into the LTSP root and installed lightdm + mate. As I understood what I read, this would boot the environment on the diskless system. All of this seem to work correctly.
What I need to do next is to find a way to setup the LTSP clients to log in by authenticating on the active directory. I understand that the login account used by the LTSP client has to exist on the LTSP server.
I have successfully added the LTSP server as a worksation within the windows domain and I can log into domain accounts from the LTSP server but domain credentials do not work when using an LTSP client, I can only log in if I use an account that exists on the LTSP server. I wanted to know if there is a way to accomplish AD authentication.
Do I have to build an LDAP server on the LTSP server, sync accounts with the Active Directory to be able to log in with AD credentials?

Feb 2, 2011I followed these steps to add a client to my active directory domain, everything is working as expected except that when a username has whitespace it creates a directory in /home with whitespace and gconf fail to access his config dir in the user's home. KDE also fails to start but I don't know what's failing yet. I found that the easiest way to fix these issues is to replace whitespaces by underline in homepaths so I changed the pam_mkhomedir source to replace the whitespaces and save it using the usermod command. It should work but is not... the reason is that I can't change the user data using the usermod because domain users are not in /etc/passwd.

General :: Add Many Individual IPs Quickly?
Jan 26, 2011We have quite a few SEO clients who require multiple IPs which are all from different class c allocations. (10 - 50 IPs) used for projects lasting weeks to months at a time. Since we don't have connected IPs in ranges we can't use the range scripts but I don't know of a way to easily add a long list of individual IPs. These are CentOS servers, by the way

Jul 10, 2010Using a GUI file browser, I would like to be able to mark files with an emblem or something similar as quickly as possible, with a single click. I'm currently using Gnome Nautilus in my Ubuntu 10.04, which doesn't seem to offer the functionality. I'm not keen on trying the extension Nautilus-Actions as it doesn't seem to be open source. I've set up some scripts though, but accessing them through the pop-up submenu is just clunky enough to still have me searching for a faster solution. Does a file browser exist that would let me set up a toolbar button for marking files? Or a button for launching scripts, which would amount to the same thing.

Feb 12, 2010when i play a song in banshee, or a videos video, i get no sound at all. however, in banshee 1 3 minute song will appear to play in about 20 seconds (the progress bar speeds along), and videos videos play back in ultra-fast motion with no sound. weirdly, when i go to system settings -> multimedia, and click test on the default sound device, the kde login sound plays back fine. this worked when i first installed; does anyone know what's going on here? i think it may be a problem with gstreamer?

Sep 11, 2010I'm running badblocks on some new disk drives just to be safe before my return period expires. I'm running the command

1) When it gets to the "reading and comparing" phase, it seems to complete in <1s. I see other posts where people say this takes them as long as it took to write to the drive. I don't see any mention of this being quick, so I'm just afraid that badblocks is being denied read access or something.. Anyone familiar with this behaviour?
2) Obviously since it is on a sixth pass, badblocks thought that it found new bad blocks on the second pass (or later). When I check SMART, though, the drive has not re-allocated anything (despite having plenty of spares)... Doesn't this seem odd? Is there some reason why the disk would not step in upon a write fail? In fact, I thought a write fail should be transparent... Which makes me wonder if question 1 (above) is causing this...
