Debian :: Running On An USB HDD?

Nov 26, 2010

I want to use a system like AD on linux. I've heard Samba is capable of doing that. eg. There are 10 client computers in my network with Windows XP and Server PC with Debian Linux.

Currently the networking is done on a P2P basis by setting a workgroup but I want to make it a client Server kind of a networking system where the usernames and passwords is stored on the Debian Server and the clients are authenticated against that .. Also which ever PC they use they should get their user directory files irrespective of the computer they use...

finally once all that is done ... I want to create a custom Debian DVD with the settings pertaining to my network... so that in case of a server failure.. all i have to do is just reinstall from this DVD and voila .. Everything set back to normal...

Debian :: Running Same Process Multiple Times(from Another Account) / An Instance Of Newsbeuter Is Already Running Error?

Aug 6, 2010

Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

Debian :: Running MythTV On Sid?

Feb 12, 2010

Is anybody running MythTV on Sid, or squeeze or lenny for that matter? I ask because I am trying to set MythTV up on a fresh debian install. I had (and can put back) KnoppMyth, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth (I've got R5F27, from 2007). That said I know that my hardware works, I'm just having trouble getting said hardware to work on this fresh install.

I've tryed following this Howto: Installing MythTV on Debian Etch - MythTV which did not work for a lenny install. I wound up with an PnUP error I coudl not sort out. I then installed sid, and followed this Howto: Installing MythTV SVN on Debian Sid - MythTV which failed too. I was unable to get past installing the ivtv drivers, as per this Howto: Howto:Debian - IVTV, the building and installing the modules part. Some errorin the source files I could not sort out. I then I tryed a combination of the two, which is where I'm at right now.

I did a fresh netinstall, upgraded to sid. Installed mysql, nVIDIA drivers and ivtv drivers & firmware from the sid repos. Next I installed MythTV from the debian-multimedia sid repos. Configured the mythbackend, filled the database, and configured the mythfrontend. alas, I can not get any TV out put. I'm pretty sure it's my Hauppauge PVR-150 TV Tuner card that is the issue, but I'm at wits end in trying to sort it out.

Debian :: Running VPN Connection At Boot

Jan 4, 2016

I have a headless Pi running Rasbian on my network. Upon booting I'd like it to automatically connect via the VPN connection. However upon startup this does not occur. I'm relatively new to Linux/Raspbian, so the I might not be going about the issue in the correct manner!

I connect to the Pi via TightVNC viewer. However when connecting using this method the GUI access is not admin/SU, hence when I try and start the VPN connection it states that this is not possible as I am "Not authorised to control networking". The only way I can connect via the VPN is to hook up the Pi to a monitor and keyboard.

1) How can I ensure that the VPN connection occurs at startup?
2) Using TightVNC viewer, how can I access the gui in admin/SU mode?
3) Is it possible (easily) to connect to the VPN using terminal commands?

Debian :: Running Live-CD From Fixed HDD?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been asked to create a Linux build which will contain open source vmview. Simple enough, but I would like to have this deployed onto different desktops from an imaging server using multicasting, we use Symantec Solution Suite 2.5 therefore the smaller the image the better for us. I would also like the image to be fully manageable i.e log in and add / remove apps etc but all it will need is a user account, a root account, web browser, rdesktop and vmware view open client.

I have gone down two routes:

1. There are Live-CD's out there that can do the important things that I want which is to use vmware view and I do like the fact that it is compatible with all our current hardware so I am happy to use this for the time being but I hate the fact that we have to boot it from CD as we have quite a few PCs in the room. I would like to convert the distro to boot from HDD exactly as you would from a CD but cannot seem to find a solution to this.

2. I have created a Debian and a OpenSuse build which does exactly what I want albeit taking a bit more disk space than I would like, but my issue is how do I capture and deploy this to different hardware as our imaging server only does cloning.

Debian :: PS3 Running An .img Of Squeeze - Out Of Space

Feb 10, 2011

If you haven't heard, PS3's on custom firmware have access to a linux install of sorts.

The OS is running from an .img of a Debian squeeze install.

My problem is that installing anything makes it run out of space. (It's only a 1Gig image)

I have searched and found some info, but it doesn't seem to work.

Make sure you have loop module on your linux.

Now you can copy the linux.img to your root of usb stick...

AND...

Mount first the original 1gb linux.img and then copy it to somewhere and then create an bigger image and copy to the new image.

mount:

And then follow the how to above. i think you should copy the folder with rsync because cp command will damage folder permissions!

Debian :: Deb Squeeze Running From USB-stick

Mar 8, 2011

I want to get a running Squeeze onto a bootable USB-stick to test it, to make desirable adaptions and adoptions and only when I feel, that everything is okay, install that over my existing Deb-installation.

The DVD however offers only an "install" over an existing Linux-system, destroying that. Really hours and hours of Google aso. brought no solution to a - in my opinion - simple task.

I want to transfer the content of the DVD onto the USB-stick, make that stick bootable and THEN enable me to act like the system on the stick were my real OS, including of course making changes to the configurations. Only when I'm satisfied with the result, I then want to overwrite my existing system.

General :: Debian TEXT Only Running Hot?

I recently found a laptop that had a broken / failing graphics card so i installed debian and did not opt to install the desktop environment. This system runs on my network and i connect to it through putty.

My main issue is its running hot, i touch the bottom of the laptop and its hot. This computer isn't doing anything, its running in text mode (and the lid is closed so the screen is not on) why is it so hot.

Are there any configuration changes i can make to reduce the heat? I tried to look myself online but could not find much. Is there a way i could config it so it would go into like sleep mode after x min and wake on a lan request?

All that is needed to run Firefox 45.0.1 is in place from Ice weasel.

Question: Will there be any ill side-affects by using the files from Ice Weasel to run Firefox 45.0.1? Should I UN-install Ice Weasel and install Firefox 45.0.1?

One side-affect that I have observe is that I can not make Firefox my default. Every time I start Firefox 45.0.1, I get a pop up asking if I want to make this my default browser.

Debian :: Running Admin Commands As Non-root

Apr 4, 2016

I use two separate systems both running Debian 8. On one (my main) I can't do some commands including ping, shutdown and reboot without running them as root user, however on my other system I can ping and reboot as a non-privileged user. The permissions on both systems are the same for /bin/ping and /sbin/systemctl (reboot). I thought at first it was something to do with what groups my main was in, but that doesn't seem to be the gase.

I know I can fix it by setting setuid for both, but my question is why is it different on both machines? Is there a global setting controlling this in /etc or perhaps an icmp setting?
