Debian Configuration :: Eth0 Upload Speed Slows To Trickle After Upgrade?

Aug 5, 2011

A few months back I performed a routine aptitude upgrade on a Squeeze installation on a DELL Vostro desktop. My eth0 upload speed is now very bad although download speed is good. I suspect that it could be related to my other problem [URL] which was caused by the OS enabling noveau driver instead of the installed NVIDIA proprietary drivers.

dmesg says:

eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM57788) rev 577880001] (PCI Express) MAC address 00:26:2d:23:a0:a5
eth0: attached PHY driver [Broadcom BCM57780] (mii_bus:phy_address=300:01)
eth0: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIrq[0] ASF[0] TSOcap[1]
eth0: dma_rwctrl[76180000] dma_mask[64-bit]

Where do I start to troubleshoot?

Networking :: Large FTP Upload Slows And Fails?

Feb 3, 2010

I am programmatically doing a large FTP upload (about 5 Gb's of 2-3 Mb files) from my Windows 7 machine to a ProFTPd server on my Ubuntu box. When the program is run, transfer rates are huge! but as run time continues, transfer rates drop off significantly and eventually slow to a halt resulting in a:

Read Timed Out

error.

The rest of the uploads fail due to Socket Read Errors.

Why is the transfer failing like this?

Debian Configuration :: ProFTPd -- Cannot Download From FTP - Can Upload Though

Sep 7, 2011

I rent a dedicated virtual server (ve) from Media Temple. It is one of those servers where they give you the base OS install and then you have to install all of your own applications.

Anyways, setting up the FTP software for the server has been hell. I am using ProFTPd and Webmin 1.510. I am able to log into the FTP and upload files to any of the directories that I have created.

The issue here is that I cannot download anything from my server via FTP. I have tried multiple clients (Filezilla is what I use normally), but they all come back with "Transfer cannot be started".

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Upload Pics To Facebook But Can Download Normally

Apr 30, 2011

I am using debian squeeze, with browsers chrome, firefox, and flashplugins installed.

I get online via ipv4 DSL, pppoe(I don't quite sure their relationships), I can browse websites, watch flash smoothly, can download softwares from websites to my desktop PC via the browser chrome or firefox with speed about 200kB/s, if I download an some 700MB ubuntu iso from ftp6.sjtu.edu.cn, it reaches 10MB/s.

The thing is, I can't upload files from my PC to online disks(say [url], [url] via browser (firefox, chrome etc), can't send email with an attach file even as small as 1MB via broser, can't post topics on this forum with attachment, can't upload pics to Facebook.

When I try do these "upload things", the web browser just stays there and doesn't refresh. Some online disks have a instant upload speed of 10kb/s ,then it quickly slow down to less than 200b/s, finally it stoped there ,and say "upload failed, network failure".

Here is my configuration files or test results.

Debian Configuration :: Eth0 Connects But Don't Have Internet

Dec 17, 2010

I installed Debian Squeeze on my system two days ago, using a wired connection to internet (which worked fine). After that, I had to install the non-free wireless package in order to scan wireless networks. It now works fine, and I can connect and get to internet. But with wired connection, i connect via eth0 and none of my applications work. And they're not in offline mode. Also, i already went here: URL,,, and I checked if that was my case. I tryed what they say several times in some different ways, but I still can't connect. Even more, if I change something like they say, I get "unmanaged device" and I can't even connect to the internet. And the wired connection works, I'm using it right now on my ubuntu 10.10.

If you want more information, I just tried to ping sites like google.com or ......com using network preferences and it does work, it gets 100% of the packages back around 50ms later, so the internet appears to work. Also, when I connect via wireless, everything works perfectly.

May 10, 2011

I noticed that when my server boots up, it's network interface on eth0 is always down and I always must run the 'ifup eth0' command in order to get it to work for some reason. I checked my configuration and it looks legit to me...

Anyone know why my system is booting with out bringing up my eth0 interface? It's very annoying.

Ubuntu One :: Very Slow Upload / Speed It Up?

Apr 25, 2010

I have been trying out Ubuntu One for the past couple of days but find it to be incredibly slow. At first i had put a folder will a large amount of images in the ubuntu one folder. The total size of it was 35Mb, after over 26 hours only 11,5Mb of that had been uploaded.

After looking around some on these forums i saw several comments about it being slow when it is a large amount of files, no matter if the filesize is small or large. I decided to try it out with a larger single file. I erased everything that was in the previous share and then put my testfile of 350Mb in the Ubuntu One folder.

After two hours of waiting i could still not see it on the U1 website so i decided to see how long it would take with dropbox and put a copy of that file in my dropbox folder as well. The file was uploaded correctly to dropbox in just a couple of minutes but it has still not been uploaded to the U1 website even though it has been 4-5 hours since i first put it in my U1 folder.

Debian Configuration :: Eth0 Link Down On 6.0.2 When VoIP Phone Is Used?

Jul 20, 2011

I recently set up a Debian-based gateway+router on a remote site. I've installed OpenVPN and made a VPN bridge to another network (that server is also Debian). The main network has all the resources and also a VoIP server (asterisk). Bridge seems to work fine, except that every time a Linksys phone is used to call - after a few seconds I get:

Jul 20 12:16:05 sklad kernel: [403987.817695] eth0: link down
Jul 20 12:16:05 sklad kernel: [403987.817939] br0: port 1(eth0) entering disabled state
Jul 20 12:16:07 sklad kernel: [403990.113701] eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x4DE1

[Code]....

So whenever the phone is used, network falls down for a few seconds. And of course this breaks the call. There is also another Linksys box (analog-to-voip) and it works fine most of the time. However sometimes this "eth0 link down" happens too. There is nothing more in syslog to analyze, so I don't know where to dig. Physical device of eth0 is D-link DFE520.

Ubuntu :: Upload Manager That Controls Speed?

Aug 27, 2010

I was wondering if anyone knows of an upload manager, either native or wine, that allows the control of upload speed? I have one of those broadband plans that severely restricts upstream bandwidth, and while I'm uploading there is no room left for upstream communication, so I can't do anything else online but upload (boring). If I can limit my upstream speed to, say, 20KBps, it essentially frees all my downstream bandwidth and I can actually use my computer.

Currently, I've only tried plowshare for uploading, and though it seems to work well, it doesn't allow shaping...

Debian Configuration :: Using WiFi Router On Eth1 Bridged To Eth0

Dec 13, 2015

I am running : Linux ics385 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u6 (2015-11-09) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Here's the situation

1. I'm trying to configure a WLAN using a D-Link DLR655 wifi router that is connected to eth1.

2. eth0 is connected to the ISP's DHCP router and has the IP 192.168.0.24

3. I've bridged eth0 to eth1 such that eth1 has the static IP 192.168.8.1

4. I've manually configured the router and it uses the 192.168.8.1 as the WAN address with its subnet on the 192.168.10.* address space.

5. I can connect a laptop to the D-Link using wifi and ping 192.168.8.1 but I can't ssh to it or to anything beyond it from the laptop.

6. If I'm on the server (192.168.0.24) I can ssh into either 192.168.0.24 or 192.168.8.1 but not if I'm on the laptop. I conclude from this that ssh is not the problem but the laptop says ssh: connect to 192.168.8.1 port 22: connection refused.

So, am I conceptually confused or is it that I have to open ssh up to the other sub-net address spaces or something like that?

Debian Configuration :: Creating A Network Bridge From Eth0 To Wlan0

Jan 18, 2016

I am very new to linux.I have a network camera which only has an Ethernet port but no WiFi. Sadly no Ethernet port is available close to the camera.

Therefore I now bought a raspberry pi and installed raspbian to create a bridge into the wireless network, for connecting the camera to the internet.I now played around with the interface- and bridge configuration but I have problems with it.This is how my interfaces file looks like:

(The WiFi is secured with WPA2 Enterprise)

Code: Select all# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)

# Please note that this file is written to be used with dhcpcd
# For static IP, consult /etc/dhcpcd.conf and 'man dhcpcd.conf'
# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d

[code]....

The WiFi is connection works fine and I am in the internet using the WiFi.But I am wondering about eth0. The network parameters I specified are not the same as the parameters ifconfig tells me.Ip, Broadcast, Mask, nothing is as specified. It would be nice to give the camera a static IP that I can access it always with the same IP from the RaspberryPi.The Raspberry Pi itself gets always a new IP from the WiFi network. How do I get the camera into the internet using the existing connection of the Pi?

Dec 1, 2009

I have a Fedora 11 system and cbq.init-v0.7.3 in it. Now I want to restrict upload speed from my ftp server to Internet (eth1). According to docs I've made a simple file /etc/sysconfig/cbq/cbq- 00.inet_upload_restrict:

Debian Configuration :: Slow Transfer Speeds On SAMBA Share But Gigabit Speed On SCP

Feb 12, 2016

I'm having a strange problem with data transfers between systems. I have a file server + my desktop. Both are running Debian 8.3. I have a samba share running on the file server and I mount the shares on my desktop on boot via /etc/fstab

When I copy a file using the nautilus from my home folder (on my HDD) on my desktop to the mounted network location, my transfers start out at gigabit speeds 80MB/s-90MB/s for a couple seconds and then drop down to about 8MB/s

But when I terminate the transfer and then use scp to transfer the same file, I get consistent gigabit speed throughout the transfer. I am not sure what is going on.

Fedora :: Compiz Slows Down After RAM Memory Upgrade

Oct 19, 2009

I've just added an extra 1GB of RAM memory to my laptop (HP 530). Now I have 2 GB. Everything runs great, except Compiz and 3D games. It looks like anything that's related to the graphics card now slows down. Rotating the cube lags badly, so does the Burn effect, and UrbanTerror is lagging too.

Before the upgrade, I had a Samsung 1GB SO-DIMM, 667 MHz. Then, I bought a Kingston 1GB SO-DIMM, 667 MHz too. When the laptop boots with either of the SO-DIMMs (only ONE GB at a time), everything runs smoothly, like before. But when I put both of them (regardless of the order in the sockets), my video card seems to slow down at nearly half of it's speed.

I haven't tried with Windows yet. Also, my graphics card has a dedicated memory of 256 MB, so there's no memory sharing between video and the RAM.

I just don't get it. Also, there are other people that seem to have slowdowns after upgrading the RAM, but usually the whole system is affected. For me, it's just the video. It actually boots faster with the 2 GB. Yet I found no clear solution to this.

Running Fedora 10 i686, on a 32-bit Intel Core Duo @2200 MHz, video card Intel 945GM Express, with 256 MB of dedicated memory. The swap partition is 2.8 GB in size.

I upgraded a copy of my previous 9.10 installation so I can still use 9.10.

Network does work with 10.04 but is extremely slow. Website loading is initially quite fast but then slows to a crawl. Second and third tabs appear to stall completely, waiting for the first tab to finish.

All of this works just fine under 9.04.
