Debian Multimedia :: /dev/dvd Keeps The Size Of The Preceeding Dvd?
Apr 2, 2011
I have a weird issue with dvds. When I change dvd, /dev/dvd shows the size of the preceeding dvd. Even when no dvd is mounted,a /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/dvd still shows the size of the former one. It creates problem when I play dvds in increasing order of size. (I have to reboot to acces the end the end of a second dvd.)

today I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.
Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....
Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...
How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?

On my netbook I run crunchbang in tty (because X isn't supported) and it looks rather ugly. I have made it look fairly nice with the .bashrc but the text size is way too large. Is there anyone here that knows how to change it?Also I was wondering whether a png could be used as a tty background. Though I am possibly pushing the limitations of tty with that one lol.

I've a high resolution monitor(2560x1440) on my laptop running Debian testing and would like to change the font size in X. I manage to change most of the fonts to a readable size through the openbox configuration manager. But the font in my login window and for example in apps like vlc is still very tiny. How this could be changed ....

I have been using windowmaker for some time now. I really love this wm, but I've one major problem; how do I make certain windows open the same size each time I open that program? For instance, I have a certain size I prefer for Pcmanfm, Vlc, deadbeef, and geequie, but every time I run them, they open anywhere on the desktop at all sorts of sizes. I especially hate resizing a video window when the video is playing.
I can do this in fluxbox, but I have a different set of problems with that window manager, namely, I can't organize my dockapps the way I want, despite editing the slitlist and some won't work at all. While I love Openbox, I can't get the windows sized right each time, either.

I am using the Gnome desktop in Lenny 5.03The default Gedit paper size is "US Letter", which is almost right for my HP Laserjet 4L, except that about .5 inch at the top and .25 inch at the left margin are cut off.I have defined a "Custom Size" under File -> Page Setup -> Manage Custom Sizes... with margin settings that solve the problem, but this "Custom Size" only remains the default Paper Size for printing until Gedit is closed.Using what appears to be the same gnome dialog from epiphany and evolution, the Papersize settings stick, but not from Gedit. I cannot locate any configuration file to edit, and nothing in the gconf editor seems to apply.

I was trying to adjust my gnome-terminal actually. Opened up Gnome-terminal and went to Edit > Profile Preferences > General Tab.In the General Tab there is a font option. Tried to change font-sizes but saw there is only 18, 20 and other sizes but no 19. I also saw similar things in many other fonts. To investigate further I tried same and similar fonts in Gedit as well i.e. go to Gedit > Edit > Preferences > Font and Colors and clicked on Editor Font and cycled through almost all the fonts that are on my system. I didn't see it either of them to give an option of 19. In fact saw quite a few odd sizes missing. So is this a short-coming in GNOME or something else. Is it something to do with the resolution perhaps - the current resolution is fixed at 1024*768 .

Does Recordmydesktop have a file size limit? I'm considering using the Zero compression setting to keep CPU usage down, but I don't want to run up against a 2GB or 4GB file size limit. While I know some filesystems impose this limit, most screen recorders I've used have a 2GB or 4GB limit when recording, regardless of the filesystem. Is this an issue with Recordmydesktop

Burned onto CD, some mp3 music...used windows.... Now when copying from the CD to computer using Ubuntu 9.1, ...althouth there is no problem with the sound and they play great. I noticed that the file format is now .wav, furthermore the file size is about 13 times the size. I burned a file no larger than 3-5 MB and now the same file is 60 - 70 MB. Is there an easy way to shrink these files to a more manageable size?

I have rendered out less than two minutes of High Definition animation to Avi-Jpeg Format in Blender. Now, I have this 2 GB file. Going at this rate, it's going to take a whole DVD set to play a 15 min movie.
Surely, this file doesn't need 2 GB just for 1:45 min/sec, right? Even at high def? How do I reduce this file size down to like a manageable number, say, 20 miB?

I have a 500MB video that is 720x400. I want to half the size of the video while retaining the same relative quality. My main goal is to half the filesize of the video, but to do that and keep the same relative quality I will have to also make the resolution smaller.I can't seem to find a way to do this.I would preferer to use ffmpeg, but any solution would be good at this point. I would really like to be able to do this from the command line, but if there is a gui program that will also give me the command line it uses, that's great too.Does any one know of a way to half the file size of a video while maintaining the same relative quality?

I am running ubuntu 10.04 with the fglrx driver installed with apt-get. I have an ATI Radeon HD AGP with 512MB of video ram. My bios window size is 64MB. The Xorg.0.log file shows that 512MB is recognized. I also tried checking the /proc/mtrr file and it shows two values one I believe is my ram size which looks to be correct at 1.5GB the other is 512MB which I think is my video ram size, but when I do an lspci -v the video ram size shows 256MB. I am trying to run Doom 3 and it only allows me to use 256MB of memory.

i have an hp 110 mini running 10.10 laptop (not netbook. i prefer the laptop desktop). i use firefox as my default browser. i find that i must always scroll and center web pages with embedded video (e.g. videos), and even then, i may not see the entire video frame (off the page top and bottom)
i know i can "open up" the usable area of firefox with add-ons (but haven't done it yet). are there any other ways, either through ubuntu screen settings, firefox settings, or flash settings, to shrink or adjust the default video frame size on the page? or is this simply one of the limitations of a netbook i will have to deal with?

I'm using a basic ffmpeg command to convert some avis into mp4 : file01.avi - 544x416, 368MB
Code:
$ ffmpeg -i file01.avi -vb 750k -s 432x336 file01.vb750.432x336.mp4
After conversion :
file01.vb750.432x336.mp4 - 432x336, 302Mb.
If I alter the output file dimensions to 352x272 I then get a file size of 301MB, which is just 1MB less than the file of dimensions 432x336 ? I had expected size to be 30-40MB lower. I do not want to compromise quality by reducing the bitrate to below 750 kb/s so how can I alter the ffmpeg command syntax to get a considerably smaller file size with video dimensions 352x272 ? I would like to use the default codecs and avoid x264 for the mean time.

In Ubuntu 11.04, all windows display larger than the available screen size, and I haven't found a way to make them fit within the display area of the monitor. This is a Dell 19" flat screen monitor, and I've tried changing the display; no matter what resolution is selected, the windows all bleed past the screen.
