Server :: OEL 5.5 And Oracle 10.2.0.5 Low Decrease Of Memory?

May 13, 2011

I have an issue with few servers. All have OEL 5.5 and various versions of oracle (mainly 10g something).

I've noticed on one machine that amount of free memory is slowly decreasing. When it comes to less then 30M, application has problems. Ive tried adding mem on this machine (virtual), and it behaves the same.

The same is on physical machines I have simmilar, if not the same config. Variations are with physical memory installed, and it does not matter if servers have 2G, or 8G, free -m gives around 30 free

It does not swap, and does not make some big issues on other machines, but on this one, application that uses this DB timeouts the user. Is there some chance to check what is creating this issue?

P.S. I've tried with DB admin to check something related to oracle itself, bit when we shutdown instance, Oracle frees 1.5G allocated to him, but nothing else. Will try testimg a bit more, but any thought on this is usefull. This is production server, so no big issues can be done. Will try to copy it to other hardware and do some testing, but then no App server available to attack it.

Fedora :: Decrease The Size Of Ext4?

I am new to Fedora, and I noticed when I opened my home folder that I only had 54GB. My HD is 120, and when I used the disk utility, I noticed that 64GB are in ext4! What?! This was not a problem in Ubuntu, so why has it happened now? Is there anyway I can decrease the size of ext4 and give some of it to Fedora?

Software :: How To Decrease Disk Size

Apr 16, 2011

On F12 and sure need to upgrade. Way back when I first had a bad disk on the "system" disk that was 80G, I only had a 200G lying around. Next time that happened my other 200G wasn't "big" enough it said, so I put a 500G in there. Now it seems I got more bad blocks etc but I need to lower the size 'cos I don't want to put a 1Tb HDD in there. My question from all of this is, how do I decrease the image so I can put it all on a smaller HDD?

Used space on the system disk's partitions is about 30G, so an 80G disk should be sufficient. What I can think of is that I need to "move" all data to the "beginning" of the HDD, then make an image of it but and the entire disk, just the data. I've tried that with no luck since the image seem to get as big as the HDD, hence why I always needed to increase the HDD all the time.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Decrease Thread Stack Size

Feb 5, 2010

Desperate to reduce RAM usage of my tiny VPS running Ubuntu 9.04 and Apache2.2.11, here I saw that:
On Linux, each child process will use 8MB of memory by default. This is probably unnecessary. You can decrease the overall memory used by Apache by setting ThreadStackSize used by Apache by setting ThreadStackSize to 1MB in.

So I tried to give the suggestion a try. But when I append:
ThreadStackSize 1000000
in my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> directive, and restarted apache, it failed with this message:
Invalid command 'ThreadStackSize', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

So I figured out that the relevant modules are neither enabled nor available on apache2. Now I am wondering whether there is a way to decrease the ThreadStackSize without the need to compile apache from source? If not, what should I do?

Ubuntu :: Does Operating System Decrease The Original Size Of The HDD

Feb 9, 2011

I have two questions:

1- Does Linux operating system decrease the original size of the HDD? because first I was only using a Windows 7 Ultimate on my Laptop Lenovo G550 4446 the D:/ partition size was 140 GB Free of 190 GB.. After I installed the Linux ubuntu along with the other Windows 7 I found the D:/ partition size became 68 GB free of 122 GB... Why the hell the size decreased?? Did the HDD destroy?

2- How can I hack Wireless Network of type WPA2/WPA or WEP using the linux? I have heard that I can do that using Shell Konsole, but I can't see Shell Konsole in my Linux ubuntu 10.10... Is it required to be installed over the internet or something, or if it is already installed within the operating system, can you tell me where I can find it?

Debian Multimedia :: How To Change Icons Size And Gaps Size

Oct 22, 2015

today I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.

Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....

Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...

How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Video Memory Misreported

Feb 24, 2011

I'm trying to increase my framerate on World of Warcraft, and I'm not sure if this will help but it should in theory. I'm not even sure if I'm right in my assumption that it's currently non-optimal. nvidia-settings reports the full 1024MB of onboard video memory from my 420GT, but lspci reports three separate figures which don't even add up to 256MB:

[Code]....

Now, I don't know which to trust, is all the video memory being detected or just the pittance that lspci reports? To my mind, more graphics memory means you can store more graphical code and data closer to the gpu resulting in faster framerates, right?

Surely, this file doesn't need 2 GB just for 1:45 min/sec, right? Even at high def? How do I reduce this file size down to like a manageable number, say, 20 miB?

I would really like to be able to do this from the command line, but if there is a gui program that will also give me the command line it uses, that's great too.Does any one know of a way to half the file size of a video while maintaining the same relative quality?

The Xorg.0.log file shows that 512MB is recognized. I also tried checking the /proc/mtrr file and it shows two values one I believe is my ram size which looks to be correct at 1.5GB the other is 512MB which I think is my video ram size, but when I do an lspci -v the video ram size shows 256MB. I am trying to run Doom 3 and it only allows me to use 256MB of memory.

i know i can "open up" the usable area of firefox with add-ons (but haven't done it yet). are there any other ways, either through ubuntu screen settings, firefox settings, or flash settings, to shrink or adjust the default video frame size on the page? or is this simply one of the limitations of a netbook i will have to deal with?

Debian Multimedia :: Integrated Intel Video And High-def Video W/vaapi?

Jul 6, 2011

I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:

1.aptitude install libdrm libva.

2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.

3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.

My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?

Debian Multimedia :: Xserver Eating Memory?

Nov 21, 2010

I have installed Debian Lenny today from netinst cd. It all went good, hen I installed some basic utilities, daemons and libraries like dbus, hal, libgtk2.0, libasound2, alsa-utils, htop (for checking system load). Then I installed X.org with commandaptitude install -R xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input-mouse xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-video-intel xinit xterm twmI used -R to pull less dependencies. When I ran startx X Server started, and I got on twm. But when I checked on htop, my memory usage was 175MB, and before starting X Server it was only 25MB. Why is X Server using so much memory on Lenny? I also have Debian Sqeeze on a different partition, it uses so much memory with all gnome services running+ iceweasel and amsn.

Software :: Best GCC Flags For Memory And Size?

Sep 7, 2010

I am creating a very minimal LFS distro that will be targeted towards a very low ram machine as a server.

The machine has 32MB of RAM and a P3 Processor.

I am using a flash drive as the hard drive. The flash drive is rated at 512 MB.

The processor I am not worried about but the RAM I am.

What would be the best optimization flags for RAM and Size?

I didn't set "march" to "native" because I am building the LFS distro on a much much faster PC and going to run it on the older PC.

I know: CFLAGS="-Os -s -march=pentium3" is the minimal but is there anything else?

Should I use "-march=pentium3" or "-march=i686"?

General :: USB Memory Stick Has Doubled In Size - Why Is So?

Nov 24, 2010

I have an OCZ Mini-Kart USB stick which says 2GB on it, and it has been a 2GB stick for the last 3 years. However, I recently put it into a PC running XP (which had no viruses as far as I am aware) and all of the files in the single subdirectory became corrupted and unreadable. All files at the root of the USB stick were fine, and I could still boot from it (I had Puppy linux installed).

I looked to see if the corrupted files in the subdirectory were recoverable, but they were all inaccessible, (with freshly mangled file-names containing multiple copies of the characters '' and '=' amongst others), and reporting file sizes of up to 1.9GB each. I examined the memory stick with fdisk and with Gparted, and saw that it was reporting two 2GB partitions, which was certainly not the case before, as I had recreated the partition table several times in the past.

I removed all partitions, created a new partition table and recreated a single partition, which is now 4GB in size. I have trashed it and recreated it three times, formatting it with ext3, ext2 and finally FAT32, all of which reported a partition size of 4GB. I currently have a 4GB FAT 32 partition, and have tested it by successfully copying a 3GB .iso file to it.

Although it's nice to have a 4GB memory stick, it does seem rather odd and I no longer trust it with my data.
