Debian Multimedia :: CD ROM Drive Not Working Normally?

Jun 25, 2011

I just made a dist upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze.

CD Rom Drive is not working normally...when I access it in nautilus, the nautilus just disappear.

Though I could read the files in the CD inside (using the right side pane of nautilus)...ejecting the CD produces this error: "unable to eject cdrom0 failed to execute child process "eject" (Permission Denied)"

Debian Hardware :: CD Drive No Longer Working

Oct 21, 2010

I'm having an issue with my cd drive. It was working perfectly fine the last time I used it, a few weeks ago. It no longer spins up when I insert a cd it sounds like the laser keeps readjusting itself or something. The BIOS picks up the drive just fine, in the right place with the name.Nothing seems to have changed there. I think its a software issue and not a hardware one because I haven't touched the case or anything inside since I cleaned a month ago. I tried installing kvm and qemu a few weeks ago. However my hardware doesn't support it so I removed it. Could one of these programs have broken something? Is there a system log file this type of thing.

Debian Multimedia :: XF86Audio Multimedia Keys Not Working In Squeeze

Jun 23, 2011

I finally installed Squeeze on my laptop and found out that the XF86Audio multimedia keys do not work.

When I press them, they're correctly identified by xev but they do not produce the desired effect (raise/lower/mute volume, play/pause/stop/prev/next song in media players like Sonata).

Funnily enough though, they do work in Audacious, which has its own plugin to manage XF86Audio media keys.

So it's like the action of pressing these keys is not intercepted by the system and no event is triggered.

I think this might be due to a missing package or configuration but I have no idea where to look...

Debian Multimedia :: KDE Reading Too Much From Network Drive

May 2, 2015

I have a server set up with Samba. On the desktop side I use KDE. I can clearly track intensive smbd activity, being the first on the iotop results page. Another thing is that after reading from the server's HDD, it seems to write on the desktop's SSD. It does this intermittently.I really want to know how can I stop this. It's very annoying and I bet I don't need it since, using previous versions of Debian, I could go well without this activity.

Debian Multimedia :: K3b No Optical Drive Found

Apr 3, 2011

I tried to burn a cd today and k3b told me it couldn't find an optical device. It suggested making sure HAL was running, it is. Nothing has changed except auto upgrades, so I tried an apt-get upgrade to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. Burning has never been an issue before, and googling all day hasn't provided any answers, apart from finding /etc/init.d/hal The permissions haven't been changed.

Debian Multimedia :: Right Ctrl Not Working / What To Do?

Mar 12, 2010

Right Ctrl has traditionally been the key used to un-grab the keyboard/mouse in VirtualBox. I've never had a problem with it before, but on my laptop it doesn't work. When I press the key, I get this xev output code...

So, I am pretty confident that the key itself is functional. However, it doesn't seem to do anything in applications. For example, keyboard shortcuts in Kate (such as Ctrl+a to select all) do not work with the right Ctrl key.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Get Sonata And Mpd Working

Apr 19, 2010

I'm trying to get sonata and mpd working. My problems:1)mpd - I don't want to have to edit /etc/mpd.conf and specify that I am the only user that can use mpd, however, mpd complains if it is left as "mpd" for the user. Is mpd possible on multi-user systems??2)mpd again - I keep getting "connection refused" errors when trying to use mpc. It's trying to connect to localhost and port 6600, but mpd is refusing the connection.3)sonata - I managed to get mpd working once (but my configuration was a mess so I had to start over) and even with an mpd database in my home directory, sonata shows absolutely nothing in its library.I'm not sure what to do with it because its documentation is very sparse.

Debian :: Multimedia Keys Not Working After Upgrade

Jul 29, 2015

Today I did the following:

Code: Select allapt-get upgradeapt-get dist-upgrade

After a reboot the multimedia keys are not working anymore.

Also Code: Select allxev doesn't give any output when pressing the multimedia keys.

I've also checked the packages that were upgraded, but none seems (to me) to be changing anything in regard to key events.

Code: Select allStart-Date: 2015-07-29  09:17:10
Commandline: apt-get upgrade -V
Upgrade: libasan1:amd64 (4.9.3-2, 4.9.3-3), gdisk:amd64 (1.0.0-2, 1.0.0-3), cpp-4.9:amd64 (4.9.3-2, 4.9.3-3), libstdc++-4.9-dev:amd64 (4.9.3-2, 4.9.3-3), libpanel-applet0:amd64 (3.16.1-3, 3.16.1-4), python-debianbts:amd64 (1.12, 1.13),

[Code] ....

I'm on the Debian testing branch. Initially I used xfce, but am now using i3.

Why there are no events after the upgrade? Maybe I should downgrade some of the above packages?

Debian Multimedia :: Flash Player Not Working

Dec 28, 2014

I installed Debian Wheezy on an external server. For my purpose I need to install a graphical interface with the following command

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install gnome-core xorg iceweaselNext I need to install xrdp to connect to the server via Remote Desktop Connection. Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xrdp

After that I installed Oracle Database 12c. It was a bigger effort to get the whole system going than initially supposed. As far as I can see it is working now. Finally to use Oracle Enterprise Manager in the Iceweasel Browser I also need to install the flash player. After modifying the sources.list I did that with the following command

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree.It installed successfully. Now I started the browser unfortunately it is not working perfectly. Typing in the URL of the Enterprise Manager I can see the site, but there is no text!!! (see the attached picture)

Debian Multimedia :: KDE Lock Screen Not Working

Jul 11, 2015

Just upgraded to Jessie from Wheezy. The process went smoothly.

I've noticed the lock screen is inescapable. The "Unlock" button does nothing, the keyboard is completely disabled, and all I have is a clock to stare at for all of eternity until I force a reboot. It doesn't hang or freeze, I'm just unable to get out of the lock screen. I've tried configuring the widgets and stuff in the System Settings, but I can't make it usable.

It was working perfectly in Wheezy, and is a pretty important feature that I use all the time when other people are around and I need to leave my station.

Debian Multimedia :: KDM Failsafe Session - Not Working?

Jan 21, 2011

What is the Failsafe Session Type that you can select from the KDM login screen supposed to do ? With Squeeze RC1, if I attempt to log in to a failsafe session, I am returned to the KDM login screen. This does not seem very failsafe to me but then I am not a desktop expert. With Lenny (5.0.7), I get a single console window, which, I guess, at least gives one a chance of fixing whatever may be stopping the normal KDE session from starting.

Debian Multimedia :: Nouveau Not Working With 2.6.33 RT Kernel?

Jan 26, 2011

I'd like to run a real-time kernel with the latest linux-rt patch, for 2.6.33. Incidentally, the .33 kernel was the first to include the Nouveau driver, and seeing that I cannot get the proprietary NVidia driver to compile --the RT patch really messes things up and the patches for nv-linux.h out there all seem incomplete-- I thought it would be a good idea to switch to Nouveau and save me from additional headaches.

I'm running sid, and as you certainly know, the Nouveau driver has been backported to the stock Debian kernel, 2.6.32-5-686. It works very well, all I had to do was change my xorg.conf with this line : Driver "nouveau".

However, when I boot my new 2.6.33-rt kernel, Xorg stops here :

[skipping a lot of stuff that seems to work ok]
(II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so
(II) Module nouveau: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.7.7, module version = 0.0.15

[Code]....

So what is so different about the backport to 2.6.32 ? How come the DRM lib, or whatever it is, doesn't work with 2.6.33 ?

I just thought of something, I'll try compiling my 2.6.33 kernel without the -rt patch and I'll let you know.

Debian Multimedia :: Compositing In Kde Not Working After Sid Upgrade

Feb 16, 2011

I just ran one of my weekly upgrades last night (I'm using sid with the 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem kernel). Now compositing no longer works with kde (4.4.5). When I click "resume compositing," I get a message saying "Compositing has been suspended by another application." I'm using the radeon driver. My middle mouse button also stopped working after the upgrade, i.e., I can't use it to copy and paste; can't open new tabs in any browser using the middle button. (The mouse works perfectly in my other two computers, both of which still have kde 3.5.10 installed.) None of these problems existed before last night's full-upgrade, so the upgrade definitely broke a few things, and I don't know how to fix them.

glxinfo | grep render says direct rendering is working. But when I run glxgears, I only get text output, without the animated gears. The results from 'glxinfo | grep -i opengl' say "OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880.", and Im guessing that Gallium is causing my compositing problem. Would this also explain why the middle click on my mouse no longer works? Does anyone know how I can get compositing working again, and my mouse?

I am running Debian Squeeze stable on a bare atom board. Only yesterday I installed an analog PCI TV tuner (AverTV Super 009). But I am unable to tune any TV/FM channel.
