The default Pidgin installation does not provide me with the option to create a MSN account. Is this normal? Must I install an additional library?

I have just found, that my pidgin on a old debian Lenny machine does not support Yahoo as a protocol anymore. When checking out the list of accounts, the one with yahoo is now listed as (unknown). And when I wipe pidgin clean off the system, remove all configuration and reinstall is, now there is no way to register a yahoo account, it is just not listed in all the protocols. What is going on???

Can anyone actually create an account with Evolution in Squeeze? The "Evolution Setup Assistant" won't take me past the "Importing files" dialog. When I press the Forward button, nothing happens. However, I am unable to send or receive any messages. On empathy it just says there was a network error - unknown, and pidgin say there is an xmpp message error code 404.

View 1 Replies View RelatedPreviously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.
Does Redhat provide a 'site' license option? The amount of server my company keeps adding is growing to quickly so this would be a more ideal solution. Does any one know about this or where I could find more information? For some reason i can't access certain pages on their site (probably connection issues with this connection's firewall).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Squeeze, Pidgin 2.7.3.When starting pidgin my accounts seems to start but I see no contacts.Then I go to Accounts->Manage accounts and disable accounts, after enabling them again everything is fine. Every time I start Pidgin I get this problem, I have to disable/enable accounts to get my contacts on the list.
View 4 Replies View Relatedwhen I install Ubuntu from disc, it goes all the way through the install process and everything works fine until the part where you make your account, password, etc. When I enter all the information, sometimes it will say 'copying files..' for a while and I'll wait. Before long, though, it will say 'Ready when you are..' but the button that says forward is still greyed out and I cant click it. Ive tried going back and then forward again and it still doesnt work. Ive tried the install twice on two different discs and it wont work. Whats going on?
View 6 Replies View RelatedOn a fresh install of squeeze, I can't log in to an AIM account with being immediately disconnected and given this error: You have been connecting and disconnecting too frequently. Wait ten minutes and try again. If you continue to try, you will need to wait even longer.
I waited for several hours before trying to reconnect, but got the same message. Searching for the error led me to some bug reports from upwards of three years ago.
Strangely, this error hasn't occurred on any of my other squeeze systems.
I can ping login.oscar.aol.com as well as login.messaging.aol.com; both resolve to 205.188.251.43 for me. I tried changing the "Server" under "Advanced" to this address, but again I got the same error.
Recently, I fully upgraded my Lenny Desktop (to 5.0.4). Now I am unable to add yahoo and msn protocol in pidgin. I can't see those options in Pidgin>>Add Accounts dropdown. Several times I cleaned the old config files and reinstalled it. Still nothing to my avail

I have three accounts enabled (2 AIM, 1 GTalk), but the problem occurs even if I only have one account enabled.If I explicitly enable (or disable then re-enable) an account it will connect without issue. However, when Pidgin is launched, or if network connectivity is interrupted, no accounts will connect. No matter what, it is always reporting the status as "Waiting for network connection.Google turned up several related issues from a few years ago, but nothing with an applicable solution today.

Anyway, I once was hearing sounds, but later they've gone again. I have ALSA set up in 'System - Prefs - Sound' and also in 'Multimedia Systems Selector', Debian Testing (sid) 2.6.32-3-686. I also cannot set the tray icon to 'Blink On New Message'. When I recieve a message - I only see a smilie there, no 'blinking'.

I just got to finish installing ubuntu lastest version on my new netbook, im really exited about how powerful it can get. The thing is, I'm still keeping my old Windows 7 partition and data, and I want to access it faster, editing the grub options, to change the timer on it, and the default booting option.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?
I was reading some threads this morning and saw mention of the envy script. I wondered if it would make a big difference in graphics (nothing was wrong just curious is all) and downloaded the script. I ran it and there was only one listing for an ATI driver. I installed it and upon reboot I a notification pops up in place of my desktop. It says something about having to use low-res. The thing is it won't even use low-res. I get a box with three choices on it. Use the default, create a new profile, ***something else I forget*** and none of these logs me into desktop.
I blindly checked through some of the boxes and saw some logs. I'm using my dual-boot to type this message. This is on my R51e that has an ATI X200M card. What do I do?
EDIT: So upon reading some threads it seems I will most likely have to reinstall the OS? Am I allowed to throw a temper tantrum here???
I implore anyone who knows how to remove that 8.66***some other numbers*** driver and go back to the default one! I don't think I'll be mucking around with these types of things again!
I know Pidgin doesn't have an option to send group messages. I've been searching for some plugin from a third part, found something for Debian, but nothing for Fedora/Redhat. Does anyone know here a working plugin for this problem?

Is there a way to change the default spell check language without changing the environment language? I don't mind if it is some dirty hack or requires recompiling but since I'm not the only one trying to do that some simple tweak solution would be nice.
I`m using the VLC player available for Lenny. I used VLC in other distributions and it always played mkv`s fine and had an option to have only one instance of VLC running, so it would enque added files. But the Lenny version doesn`t seem to have it and doesn`t play mkv files as smooth as Lennys default player, which is odd.
I`m fine using the inbuilt player for mkv`s but is there an option to have just one instance of vlc? I like to click files and just have them added to the current playlist rather than have them all open in new instances of the program.
I now have a newer vlc installed, with enque and other newer features than the default, thanks to following the advice of and using packages built by stevepusser.
Using squeeze here. Until recent updates to xserver, my numlock worked as expected, but now the damn thing won't stay on anymore. Numlockx is still broken as it's always been for me in that it turns the numlock on but not the led on the keybord. I'm using slim as a login manager which everytime it's updated they set the numlock option to disabled for whaterver reason, but then that doesn't work if I enable it anyway (why have it?). So what is it with debain/(Linux) and their obsession with disabled numlocks at login, I don't get it?
