Ubuntu Security :: UFW Is Blocking Connections Even Though It's Set To Allow For In/Out
Aug 1, 2011I might be misunderstanding the log but it looks like UFW is blocking connections. I want to allow all incoming and outgoing. I guess what I'm saying is that the servers on my computer will open ports but all other ports should respond with closed just like a default Ubuntu install. Trying to use UFW to monitor connections without really doing any firewalling.

Server :: IP Blocking - Block ALL Connections Except For Certain Ones
Feb 8, 2011Ok so, buddy of mine has his ssh server setup and upon checking his logs he sees a ton of failed attempts. Now obviously these are people that are scanning him and trying to brute force him. So is there a way to block them? We know you can block each IP but is there a way to block ALL connections except for certain ones, such as his and mine? Maybe a couple others.

Sep 14, 2010My home computer has 11.3 and SuSEfirewall enabled. It connects to the net over the wireless and SuSEfirewall has this connection in the external zone.
I can successfully ssh into this computer from remote (the work computer) but none of the ssh port-forwarded connections work. I'm trying to tunnel VNC over ssh. I also tried setting http on the home computer to serve pages on a high-numbered port (8090) and tunnelling that but it also didn't work - proving that it's not a VNC problem.

The 95.91.92.92 is the public IP address of my home router, I don't understand why a connection would appear to be coming from there when I use ssh-tunnelling?
Ubuntu Security :: Mobloquer Blocking Outgoing Connections?
Jan 18, 2010Mobloquer starts up at boot and before I've even opened firefox or transmission or anything, mobloquer shows that is has started blocking several outgoing connections as well as ton of incoming connections. I was wondering if the outgoing connections is normal and what's a normal amount of network activity to show up in system monitor when I'm not actively using the internet.

Jul 4, 2011My firewall keeps blocking something called CPQ-Wbem. There have been about 10 instances of this.
A machine on the network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301. If the machine isn't yours or you haven't enabled Compaq's web-based remote management then silently drop it.
Now as far as i know i do not have a network, just a dsl connection. I also do not own a Compaq computer. So if someone who has some knowledge of this could you explain to me how a " network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301 " . This would seem to me to be a local network thing not a www thing ?
Debian :: Blocking Hosts - IP Range Access
Sep 3, 2011How would one block an IP range access to a Debian-based Linux system for say 47.1.1.1. - 48.255.255.255? Would it be with the hosts.deny file? If so, how would it be written in the file? Also, would the system require being restarted for the changes to take effect, after writing to the file?

Debian Hardware :: Testing Is Now Soft Blocking WiFi (ath5k)
Aug 20, 2014Regularly updated debian testing on a netbook. I normally use wired ethernet, but I am pretty sure that I had wifi (wlan0) working normally a few days ago.
Today, I find that wlan0 has a soft block:

Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
It seems that the kernel(?) is sending a udev event to set this:
# rfkill event
1408563052.478251: idx 0 type 1 op 0 soft 1 hard 0
# rfkill unblock wlan
works *unless* the wifi button on this laptop is used. Then I get an apparently permanent hard block.
rfkill cannot unblock, and repeated button actions do not clear.
Adding the no_hw_rfkill_switch to the ath7K driver ensures that the wifi button is disabled.
All this is new: I have been using wifi on this netbook for years without problems, so something has changed. I moved to systemd (sigh) maybe a month ago, so perhaps the root problem is a systemd udev bug.
The real problem is knowing where to look or bug report. Is it a recent change in the ath5k driver or kernel? IIRC I checked the driver and there were no recent commits. Likewise rfkill hasn't changed recently. More likely to be something around systemd udev, perhaps, given the mayhem systemd has caused on another machine here. Or perhaps somewhere in the wireless subsystem.

Security :: Debian 6: Iptables Blocking Certain IP Ranges On A Certain Port Range?
May 16, 2011I am currently running Debian 6. I would like to know if there is a way and how i would go about blocking a certain IP range from connecting to my server within a certain port range. Say for example.
i want to block ip range 123.123.123.* from connecting to my server on the ports 33000 - 43000. But, i want to allow them to connect on any other port range, and i want to be able to allow connections from my server to the blocked ip range on those same ports. so, blocking incoming only on the above port range.

Feb 3, 2011Since I cannot upgrade Adblock Plus anymore because iceweasel is too out of date for the new versions, I am trying to give privoxy a try. I am following the howto Block Ads & Fast Caching w/Privoxy +Squid without success. I am always receiving the error:The proxy server is refusing connections Iceweasel is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
I added these lines to /etc/privoxy/config

enable-edit-actions 1
permit-access 127.0.0.1
Moreover, I have edited the /etc/hosts file to block urls providing adverts and anything I wanted rejected.
Debian :: Cannot Edit VPN Connections As A User
Aug 24, 2015I am trying to add an OpenVPN connection from the Network Connections GUI. The problem is everything is greyed out when I am logged on as a user. When I log in the GUI as root I can create the OpenVPN connection no problems. The problem with that is the option to use my newly created VPN connect does not appear when I log back into my user. I have tried adding my user into the sudoers file to no avail.
How can I give my user privileges to add OpenVPN connections?

Jul 14, 2010I have ssh installed and running on my laptop(Debian Sequeeze). I can run "ssh localhost" without any problem. But for some reason I cannot connect to it from other computers. They all give "connection timed out". I can connect to these computers`s ssh servers but for some reason my laptop with Debian is not accepting any connections.

Sep 29, 2010I'm trying to setup VNC on our debian server so the boss can remotely do admin stuff from anywhere in the world. the first step is getting it working from anywhere in the room, though. And I can't even seem to get that far.
So far I have a VNC server setup, although not without problems. I downloaded and installed vnc from the vnc site, that wouldn't work because trying to start a vnc server gave this error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
There are lots of results on google for this error, and the solution everywhere seems to be the same. to install the package: libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2
However, trying to install this package in debian fails. both using apt-get and trying to manually download it from packages.debian.org it just doesn't seem to exist.
I've tried tightvnc from the official repositories and it gives the same error, too.
The way I got around that eventually, thanks to another tutorial, was to install the package vnc4server. then run vnc4passwd to create a password. and after that vncserver works fine, or seems to. Creates display 1.
Now, when I'm trying to connect to hostname:1 from another computer in the LAN. It gives error 10061, connection refused. I installed the debian and I don't recall setting it up to refuse connections on port 1. Is there anything I should check or change to allow the connection, or any log file in debian to check and see what's going wrong?
I'm also trying connecting internally via client on the debian machine, but I can't runvncviewer. I get the same missing shared library error as before. I guess I just worked around, not solved it.
I also can't access it with the java viewer. Trying to connect on port 5801 either from the server itself, or from another one on the lan, tells me it's refusing the connection.
To be clear, I'm certain that the vnc server is started. We have working DNS, and trying to connect directly to the internal IP:1 doesn't work either.

Feb 22, 2011Looking at the results of both `lsof | grep IPv4` and `netstat -tp` I noticed that I have a lot of connections open from a program called 'gvfsd-http'.
Using google, I found that this was a Filesystem something from Gnome, that would also be used If I drag something from my browser to my desktop.
Though I wonder, how I activated it, because I didn't do that...
After a bit of searching, I noticed that `screenshots.debian.net` uses the same IP address as the one noted (hades.car.gr).

Debian Configuration :: Load Balancing Over Uneven Connections?
Jan 31, 2011A little background: CCNA and A+ I have preformed this task on Cisco routers Linux for 5+ years, mostly with Debian (mostly casual, a few production situations) I need to setup a linux box with Load Balancing over a cable line 8mb down, 1mb up connection and a T1 line. If this isn't possible, at the very least I need Failover (which I have admittedly not researched as fully.) I know Failover is possible, but I would really love to double my upload bandwidth as we host a small website here. Is load balancing over uneven connections possible on Debian?
Side question: If I host a website, when users connect and get responses over 2 Public IP's, what would be the reaction on the users side? Would it get filtered and or blocked by a firewall?

Apr 23, 2011My Debian server is used by people to set up ssh-tunnels for use as a local proxy ( on their remote machines).Since only the tunnel is setup, and no shell is used, I can't use "who" to see which users have an active ssh-tunnel on my server, but I would like to have an idea about who is active etc. I think I should be able to determine this from the auth.log file, but then I would have to use some script to determine what connection is still active. Is there an easy way to see what users have active ssh-tunnels on my Debian server at any given moment?

May 25, 2011I have exim setup on squeeze to run as an "internet site". Outgoing mail works fine but it seems to just ignore incoming smtp requests on port 25. I can see the incoming connection via tcpdump but exim doesn't seem to talk. If I connect via telnet it rather quickly says connection refused. Is there something additional I need in the Exim conf?

I'm unable to connect to the internet through any wireless connections, nor through an ethernet cable. I installed the latest weekly image of Debian squeeze. apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment I also tried installing gnome-applets, gnome-netstatus-applet, and gnome-nettool, but I guess they were already installed. When I open System > Administration > Network in Gnome, there's no connections tab in the Network Settings application.

I'm one of those people migrating from Ubuntu and in Ubuntu I had to add a 'rfkill -unblock all' command to my rc.local file for this laptop. Not sure if that's relevant, but thought more info couldn't hurt.
Debian Configuration :: Unable To Access System>Pereferences>Network Connections?
Mar 15, 2011I just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)
I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)
It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?

I do some android development so through that I have learned a little bit about linux but only the basic command prompt commands and the basics of how linux works and such.Anyways, I was looking around on the forum and on other forums and I couldn't find any helpful information about how to set up wireless connections (such as wifi) on debian. When I installed debian on my computer it asked me for the ipw2200 files and I didn't have them at the time but now I have the latest framework files for that, I don't really know how to install them and after I install them I don't know how to turn on my wireless connections from there.
I am really sorry if someone already made a post on this subject and I am just too clutzy to find it, if that's the case please just post the link to that thread for me cause I'm dumb as crap.So basically the main problem I am trying to fix right now is that I cannot get my internet to work on my old dell inspiron 6000 laptop which I am trying to get to run debian.
Debian Multimedia :: Libgl1-mesa-dri Blocking Apt / "apt-get Dist-upgrade"?
Jul 24, 2011I hadn't upgraded my multimedia Squeeze box in a month, so I ran a "apt-get dist-upgrade"; I think henceforth I'll stick to "apt-get upgrade" most of the time. Anywho, I got to the point that restarting PAM required me to restart KDM (I haven't seen that snafu on Ubuntu, it seems like there ought to be a way to upgrade without restarting X and running "dpkg --configure -a" and then continuing the upgrade). Anyway, after restarting my dist-upgrade I got part way through and got an error message. The gist of it seems to be this:

I'm not having the issue with my laptop (Intel) or desktop, both testing, although both of the machines do have issues, particularly the desktop (serves me right for buying newish hardware). Maybe I should just strip off xserver-xorg* and reinstall? Or I can wait libgl1-mesa-dri sorts itself out, but it seems like it has been causing problems for over a month.
