Debian :: Looking For Scanner That Works With Debian

Dec 18, 2010

I was looking at the Canon CanoScan 8800F and the SANE website says that it works. Does anybody here have this scanner and does it work as it should?I would be using it to scan photos, slides and negatives. Perhaps somebody can recommend a different one?

Debian :: Symlinking Scanner/printer Through A LAN?

Aug 21, 2010

I have a laptop which I use for school and I have a scanner/printer that used to be near and I used to scan things and store them in the laptop via the scanner/printer's USB cable. In an attempt to make space to study more comfortably on my desk, I moved the scanner/printer near my gaming computer (on a desk that I don't use). What I want is to scan via my desktop (=gaming computer) and have it directly be stored in my laptop via a symlink and a LAN network. My desktop runs Squeeze and my laptop runs Lenny. One of my weakest points in computing is networks so I would very much appreciate it if someone could guide me through this process.

My laptop has an ethernet port and a wireless card whereas my desktop has a built-in ethernet port, a wireless PCI card as well as another ethernet port (PCI) which I am planning to install soon. For my laptop, I want wireless internet, and the wired connection to be to the desktop for the scanner/printer's purposes. As for the desktop, I want to connect to my internet via a wired ethernet connection and use my extra PCI ethernet port for the scanner/printer situation

Debian Configuration :: Only Root Can See Scanner?

Aug 20, 2010

Having successfully installed SANE and gotten a scan from my ancient Mustek scanner, I thought I had it setup. But that was running in the root terminal window. When I try to run xscanimage from GIMP in my normal user account it doesn't start up. Running xscanimage in a normal terminal it says it can't see any scanners. Yes, I added my user account to the scanner group. What else needs to be done to let a normal non-root user access the scanner?

Debian Hardware :: Cannot Find The Scanner

Very easy to get the printer working via wifi on this printer/scanner under Wheezy. But oh the scanner! XSane doesn't see it via wifi- worked ok on USB. Problem could be with Xsane or CUPS? Debian :: Scanner No Longer Recognized After Update

Nov 30, 2015

I am running Wheezy 7.9 32 bit, with the kernel Linux 3.2.0-4-686-pae, and Gnome 3.4.2 on an Intel Pentium CPU G3420 @ 3.2 GHz. I installed a new printer in August, an HP Officejet 7612 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, and it worked perfectly as both a printer and a scanner first time, despite not being listed on the supported list in SANE. Two weeks ago, I got a general software update notification, and did the update. Now the scanner is not recognised. The printer still works fine as a printer, but when using Simple-scan, I get the error message "No scanners detected. Please check your scanner is connected and powered on". I have had a look round on Google, and all the suggestions made do not work.

I tried the suggestion to add myself to the scanner users list on my PC which made no difference (even though the scanner previously worked without my being added to the scanner users list).

I have deleted the printer and re-installed it using CUPS, but that still has no effect. I tried re-installing HPLIP also to no avail, and I have now lost the toolbox on the drop down menu under <Applications> <Accessories> <HP Toolbox>, as when I click on it, nothing happens.

It would seem that something in the update has messed up Simple-scan. Looking at the dpkg log (is this the right thing to look at?) for the date of the update, I cannot find anything which directly involved SANE, so I think that it might be something else which has affected SANE. How I can find out which update did the damage? I don't normally do anything except accept recommended updates, so I am a bit lost as to what to do.

Hardware :: Using Brother Scanner (MF) Under Non-root In Debian?

Mar 12, 2010

There is a problem with scanning on Brother multifunctional under Debian Squeeze/Sid. I get things smooth and good under root (both scanimage and xsane), but under user it gives

Code:

scanimage: open of device brother3:bus6;dev1 failed: Invalid argument Obviously as under root works fine, lsusb has no problems with detection.

Code:

Bus 005 Device 010: ID 04f9:01ea Brother Industries, Ltd

Already fixed /etc/fstab:

Code:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,devmode=0666 0 0

but it is useless anyway. I had already used the scanner under simple user in ubuntu and it all worked.

Debian :: Sane - Share Epson Scanner Over Network

Apr 29, 2010

I have a debian server (squeezzy) amd 64, running with an epson BX-300f pluged to USB. And I want to share the scanner over my network. So let's do that, Intalled sane, sane utils, iscan, which I've downloaded from epson drivers and wich include epkowa drivers fro scanner to work..
after that I installed on my system (Ubuntu 9.10) xsane... on console I type:

root@bruno-laptop:/home/bruno# scanimage -L
*** glibc detected *** scanimage: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00be63d0 ***

I don't know why I find so much things, if i only have one scanner. Then I opened xsane and found the scanner over network. I chose the epson with epkowa drivers I try to scan something but it dont output nothing and sometimes it gives me "end of file reached". I can put whatever config files here if you want to, just ask. One time it worked fine.. but only half of an image...

Debian Hardware :: Scanner Fail With Invalid Argument

Oct 29, 2014

This error is very difficult to solve, but also appears widespread across the Debian universe and also others like Arch and Fedora. I use a Canon LiDE 110 scanner and it has always worked very well under Linux. This same problem affects many other scanners not just the 110. Run any front end like xSane and after initially appearing to be OK it will fail with an Invalid Argument error.

But, it does not happen to everyone. I have several machines to experiment with so I did. I also used Debian Testing and Sid, Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 and various Mint versions and desktops.

The error is all to do with USB3. Plugging the scanner into a USB2 port does not in and of itself solve the issue. Nor does running the scanner through a hub. On my older laptop without USB3 hardware my scanner works like a charm using any modern Linux. On my very old spare desktop it also works fine despite having USB3.

But, on my shiny new Intel i5 on an ASUS H97I Plus it all falls apart. After much reading of forums and many dead ends we find the problem is modern machines with Intel xHCI Mode in the BIOS. It has to be off, not enabled, auto nor super auto. But when you turn it off you turn off USB3 support and your system falls back to USB2 only. My old spare machine has an AMD chipset and USB3 enabled does not cause this error.

So if you need to use your scanner and get this error then xHCI mode is the workaround. Fine if you have no real need for USB3, but most definitely a temporary solution.

Where in the system does this error come from? Too hard for me. Is it in Sane or in the libusb sub system or all the way up to the kernel? However if you have any USB device that has stopped working this setting in your BIOS has got to be worth a try. It is nothing to do with permissions or firmware.

sane-utils updated to 1.0.24-5 in sid (Dec 12, 2014) problem still exists.

Debian Hardware :: Sane Scanner Only Detected By Root

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Scanner Works But Won't Network / Solve This?

Mar 19, 2010

Fresh install of openSuSE 11.2.
Laserjet 1220 multifunction device.

Successfully installed, network driver also installed, XSane shows both local and network scanner on local machine. Scans locally via both drivers.

However, networked scanner is not discovered by machines on local network, using XSane. Did a similar installation a few months ago with openSuSE 11.0, which works fine on the same client machine.

Have tried disabling firewall, but still no joy.

So, questions:

1] Is there anything I have missed?
2] Is anything known to be broken in 11.2?

Debian Hardware :: Make Lexmark S305 Scanner (wifi) Work With Xsane?

Mar 21, 2010

After I solved the issue about printer, now I'm struggling to make the integrated scanner of lexmark S305 work with debian. The device is connected to the network through integrated wifi connection (it is NOT connected with usb to a host, which act as a server), but I don't know how xsane can recognize it.I have just added the ip address in /etc/sane.d/net.conf, but it doesn't work at all. I read some tutorials on how to configure a network scanner, but they are all related to a scanner connected to a computer through usb, and then shared on the network by this computer. The second issue (probably more important) is that xsane probably doesn't recognize even with usb connection the scanner. The latter is not listed in the supported scanner list. Indeed connecting by usb to my laptop, it doesn't work. I haven't found any driver for it, but probably it could work with driver of other scanners.

Debian :: COM2 Works On 2.6.21 But Not On 2.6.29?

May 17, 2011

We have a GPS receiver connected to COM2/ttyAM1. It works on 2.26.21, but not on 2.6.29. It's settings are 4800 8N1, and stty gives 'the same' flags. Appears to work ok with minicom, but we cannot write to the GPS receiver on 2.6.29, and we get "ttyAM1: input overrun" during prolonged use reading NMEA strings from it. It's fine on 2.6.21. What is telling is this:

Start reading NMEA strings via minicom, no overruns. Start a user space process then that writes a little to SD, pdflush becomes more active, then blam, overruns /dev/ttyAM1 @ 4800 baud, and no overruns on /dev/ttyAM0 @ 115200 baud. How can that be?! Is pdflush using IRQ5 or competing with us for some other resource?

Debian :: Clear 3G Works, 4G And Con. Manager?

Jan 24, 2011

I have a Clear 4G+ Mobile USB modem. It is a Sierra Wireless Air Card 250u. I was able to get a brief 3G connection out of the box, with Squeeze 6.0. I would be happy to at least get connection manager working, as it does in Windows XP.

Subsequent edit. I did a clean install of 6.0 Squeeze, and Clear USB modum worked right out of the box. All I had to do was, right click on Network Manager icon on upper right corner of screen, checked enable mobile broadband. clicked on edit connection info. There I manually entered Clear as my provider, checked on connect auto, and left other fields blank or default settings. I still only get 3G, but I have multiple barriers to a microwave signal in my location. But I still will continue and may need help as I configure Clears Connection Manager, and or firmware.

Debian Hardware :: After Compiling SANE, "scanimage -L" Does Not Detect The Scanner?

Aug 5, 2010

I found someone who has a CanoScan 9000F (the new Canon flatbed scanner replacing the 8800F which is already supported in SANE 1.0.21), and managed to find out that it also uses the PIXMA protocol (the protocol used in the scanners for Canon's multi-function printer/copier/scanner devices of the PIXUS/PIXMA MP series (and other names depending on sales region).

Support for the scanner has therefore been added in the pixma backend. However, the initial tester is having trouble compiling and configuring SANE from source, so I am hoping there will be some people here who have access to this scanner and can try to help out as well.

After compiling SANE, if "scanimage -L" does not detect the scanner, probably "usb 0x04a9 0x1908" needs to be added to /etc/sane.d/pixma.conf and /usr/local/etc/sane.d/pixma.conf.

After that slow steps need to be taken to get support for the various resolutions, as this scanner as double the number of CCD rows as the 8800F, and can do double the resolution (up to 9600dpi) optically.

Debian Multimedia :: DPMS Works Only For A Moment

Mar 3, 2015

I'm using Debian Jessie on amd64. I have this video card:

Code: Select all01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [NVS 310] (rev a1)

I'm using the stock nouveau driver that ships with Jessie, and loads by default. I installed this card during my botched attempt to upgrade from Wheezy. This is a fresh install, and DPMS isn't working right.

I can run "xset dpms force off", and the screens will blank. I even see the "HDMI signal lost" screen of both (identical) monitors. However, before the power LEDs of either monitor go orange (instead of blue) the screens come back on as if I had made mouse or keyboard input. If I've locked the screen with xscreensaver, the screens are blank (I use only the blank hack). I've forgone the use of xscreensaver for now, believing it to be contributing to the problem. If I run "xset dpms force off" now, the screens blank, but the "HDMI signal lost" screen doesn't show, and the screens immediately unblank.

Here's the output of "xset q":

Code: Select allxset q
Keyboard Control:
auto repeat:  on    key click percent:  0    LED mask:  00000000
  XKB indicators:
00: Caps Lock:   off    01: Num Lock:    off    02: Scroll Lock: off
03: Compose:     off    04: Kana:        off    05: Sleep:       off

[Code] ...

It's like something is preventing the screen from going blank, but I don't know what it could be.

I installed the proprietary nvidia driver. Sadly, it does the same thing, so that's one thing I can cross off as the likely culprit.

Ran this command:

Code: Select allxset dpms 0 0 0

So when "xset dpms force off" is called, it powers down the monitor immediately. I will be reverting back to nouveau, and will report whether the problem resurfaces.
