I have a few partitions on my hard-drive, one for Ubuntu, one for Windows 7 and another for general data storage. When I installed Ubuntu, I was presented with a GUI which allowed me to easily reassign storage space from the latter two to create the former. Is there any way to get to something similar, from which I can adjust the proportions of the partition sizes, without affecting their content?

Will this affect the multi-boot capability or the Linux partition in any way? Would it be easier to reformat and partition the entire hard drive and re-install both OSes? I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP.

I've got 3 OSs installed: vista, Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 on an FS Amilo 2727 laptop, everything is fine in 9.04 but the wireless doesn't switch on in 9.10 until I do a "sudo modprobe acerhk" and then that runs, so things work with some fiddling and that's ok, what's weird is that if I don't activate the wireless in 9.10 and then reboot back into 9.04 the wireless in that then doesn't work and the "Enable Wireless" option is greyed out I have to go to vista and activate the wireless so I can get the wireless working in 9.04. you'd think each partition wouldn't affect the other ones but it obviously does.

View 7 Replies View RelatedUsually I prefer to keep my operating system on a small partition (50 gigs or so), with the rest of my system on another partition. Normally, with windows (don't flame me for saying the W word!) a small OS partition makes sense.... this way i can scan for viruses, or defrag quickly-- two non issues with linux openSUSE. (with windows, i never install programs on my C: either; this keeps the OS partition small)One advantage at least on windows, with having a small operating system partition is that it's really easy to backup & restore. If my system gets wiped out, I only lose the OS and if i have to re-install, all my personal files are still there.
Is This Done for Me Already With the Default openSUSE Partition Set-up?I just got a new 1TB Seagate HD, which I'm going to use for development purposes in the openSUSE environment.I'm wondering if I can somehow apply my methodology explained above to openSUSE (or if it even makes sense). Are the default LVM partitions ideal for a clonezilla back-up? (can I just backup my primary partition, on the second partition somewhere in case I really mess up my machine). I've been using openSUSE for just a month now, and I'm really liking it (its my favorite linux OS now).
I plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 and it will be my first Ubuntu install. I plan on dual booting with windows 7 and I would like advice on partition sizes. I have a 250 GiB drive and my planned partitions are as follows.
Sda1 (PQSERVICE) 12GiB This was pre-installed should I delete it
Sda 2 (System Reserved) 100MiB This was also pre-installed should I delete it
I know one of the above is the windows recovery partition but I don't know which one
Sda 3 (Gateway) 25 GiB This will contain windows will 25 GiB be enough
Extended partition
Logical 1 10 GiB / the main Ubuntu partition 10 GiB should be enough
Logical 2 1 GiB /home this will just hold settings so 1 GiB will be enough right?
Both above partitions are ext3
Logical 3 3 GiB swap partition I have 1 gig ram upgradeable to two
Logical 4 180 Gib shared NTFS partition
I am new to Ubuntu and would like to know if you think this is proper. I have already defragmented the hard drive and will make the partitions in Gparted on Ubuntu live test from usb drive.
I'm running the installer, and "Guided Partitioning" selected partition sizes I'm not completely happy with. I selected separate partitions for /home, /var, /usr, /tmp etc, and by default it gave me only 5GB for the /usr partition. I'd like to take some space away from /home and give it to the /usr partition, but I can't figure out how to do that using the menu options available.

From personal experience, on Windows I change the file but don't reboot and I've seen others do the same thing. I assume Linux has no exception(s), but is there any reason why a reboot is not required (to at least justify my actions)?

- the first partition is only 64MB;
- the second is a large 900GB partition and
- the last holds all the remaining space
mdadm has been used to set up
/dev/md0 - RAID1, comprised of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1
/dev/md1 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, /dev/sdc2, /dev/sdd2
/dev/md2 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb3, /dev/sdc3, /dev/sdd3
OK, so it was a silly mistake to make - but I am now need to increase the size of /dev/md0. My thinking is to reduce the size of md1 so that I can grow md0.
On md1 I have two logical volumes. I've successfully reduced the size of the volume so that I can reduce the size of md1. Now I'm at the nervous stage; I can find little written on the topic of shrinking RAID5 arrays - and even if I do this I'm unsure if I can move partitions around to regain the space I so desire.
Everything is installed and setup on my system, but when I setup my partitions I chose my Windows partition to be bootable. Can I just use cfdisk to toggle the bootable flag so my linux partition is bootable and rewrite the partition table?

I initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

View 7 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have a 1TB drive that has Ubuntu installed and is used for all of my storage, vids music etc.After speaking with a friend he suggested I change the operating system to a smaller drive and use the 1TB for storage only. His reasoning for this is that the disc with the OS on it receives much heavier use so storage should be kept separate.If that's true I have a 250GB drive that I could use as the boot/OS drive.What I was considering doing was to make the 250GB drive the boot disc in BIOS, then install Ubuntu from the Live CD onto the 250GB. After doing that my plan was to use gparted to wipe the Ubuntu OS partition off the TB drive to leave it as a storage only drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI changed partitions (partition X is now partition X+1) and can no longer boot. I get thrown into grub rescue. But even if I get past that, it still doesn't boot. (I can't see why because it's using an unsupported graphics mode by default, but that's another gripe). I would prefer an installation which is not fragile to changes in partition numbers or drive numbers. It's not 1975 any more, can't we use meaningful names instead of 0, 1, 2?

i currently have both xubuntu 10.10 32-bit and windows 7 64-bit installed on my laptop which i use mostly for college work and basic programming (i'm still learning to program).i have a 150gb partition with win7 installed, a 20gb partition with xubuntu installed and a 15gb partition with my linux home folder on, the rest of the space is unused because i thought i may need it for something else in the future.the home folder partition is formatted to etc4, i now have a need to access this data from win7 for college work, i know that windows doesn't support mounting of etc file systems so i have hit a problem.
i thought about changing the type of partition from a ect4 to fat32 but will this delete my data? or ,are there any third party software packages for windows that will allow me to mount ect4?
My laptop has a 60GB hard drive, which my ex-husband set up with a 20GB partition for Windows XP and a 40GB partition with Suse 11, which suited me fine at the time. However, I'm now finding that I need to install a whole bunch of extra Windows programs relating to my work, and the 20GB partition is no longer sufficient, while I'm hardly using any space at all under Linux.
how I might go about redistributing the space between the two partitions (any other solutions to my lack of space problem also welcome)? Please bear in mind that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing!
Goal - have Ubuntu on one HDD and Win 7 on another. Sub-Goal - get rid of GRUB without adversely affecting Ubuntu install .I have three HDD's on my system; one contains Win 7 Pro (no complaints, love it), one is for storage (NTFS) and the third has Ubuntu on it (aside from the wireless issues and DVD playback issues, I love it as well).
All three drives are internal, but the Ubuntu drive is a special case. It's installed in a cradle that resides in an external bay. The Ubuntu drive can be turned on and off at will. I don't need GRUB (which will only confuse my fair lady).
So, if I run Win 7 recovery and "repair" the mbr, what will that do to the Ubuntu drive (which will be set as the first boot device in BIOS)? Will it boot per normal when the cradle is powered up, or will it be looking for GRUB?
I appear to be experiencing an annoying issue with my soundcard. As you can see from the images below, the soundcard is detected, but not when it comes to the "output". This is only affecting one user (my admin account is fine, as was a new user set up to test it).
I've looked at this page and have attempted reinstalling alsa, but to no success.

I think I got carried away a little and installed some packages that have some dependency issues. Now I have three broken packages that need to be removed, but I don't want them to affect (remove) other packages which would be marked whenever I try to mark them for removal, for fear that their removal might affect other functions. I think my machine was just fine before I started to fumble with individual dependencies; that's why I don't what the other dependencies removed. My question is how do I remove those dependencies only using the terminal without removing the others?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been running 64-bit openSUSE 11.2 since shortly after it's release, on a quad core AMD Phenom based machine, using KDE as the Desktop. I have a USB-attached "multi-function" printer/scanner/etc., which worked fine with XSane under 11.1. On the same machine, with 11.2, I can still get a scan preview. But when I try a full scan, shortly after it starts, the progress bar stops, then XSane complains about an I/O error.
When I update openSUSE versions, if I can, I keep the old version completely intact, on the same machine. This includes the /home partition, I don't overwrite it. Sure it's a good deal more work to copy over the numerous files needed, but if there are any problems with the new software, it's extremely helpful to have a completely intact old environment for reference. I was able to do this, while updating 11.1 ==> 11.2. Booting the old 11.1 system on the same machine, I haven't encountered any scanning problems.
I haven't given a lot of details, because it's the same hardware, that should "in theory", mostly eliminate the hardware as a possible source of the problem. I'm hoping the problem can be resolved by focusing on any changes in SANE support, or XSANE itself, for USB attached scanners. It could be unrelated, but messages such as these are in /var/log/messages on the 11.2 sys:

If XSane is doing things in the wrong order, I'm wondering if it would be a problem especially for a combined printer/scanner, or would the problem still occur if the printer and scanner were two physically separate devices? I checked and there are similar messages in /var/log/messages with 11.1. But if it is an error in the sequence in which XSane does things, could it somehow cause problems under 11.2, yet not 11.1? I tried to find anything which might be related to USB device handling, which perhaps could interact. I came across messages such as these in 11.2, but not 11.1:

Is USB printer handling somehow different under 11.2? With a combined printer/scanner, could there be an interaction? I did some experimenting. I kind'a thought a scan preview was just a scan at low res. So I tried to do full scans, starting with the lowest res., and increasing. I was able to do successful full scans at 100 or 150. But from 200 on up, the higher the res., the shorter the time to get an I/O error. I'd normally use 600 or above, to get what I feel is a good looking scan. At 600 the error report is practically immediate. It's almost as if the error only occurs above a certain threshold, of amount of data per unit time. I should mention, although it's a color scanner, I'm scanning a black and white doc., so using that mode of XSane.
