Debian :: Best Web Browser To Use / Differences Between Iceweasel And Firefox?
Jun 10, 2011I got a message from Paypal (no not a scam) that said "It looks like you may be using an outdated browser with known security issues."
I am assuming it is because it may not recognize iceweasel, paypal does recommend firefox and iceweasel is based on firefox... but it may not be the same..
anyone gone through this?
What are the differences between iceweasel and firefox?

Jan 16, 2011I learned that, even while on Linux, using Iceweasel/Firefox 3.0.6 is not safe. So I tried to update the browser for my PPC G4 iMac (256 MB RAM, 800 MHz processor).
1. I downloaded a backported Iceweasel .deb from URL...
2. I then tried to install it with dpkg -i PathToIceweasel.deb
3. There was an error. I remember seeing xulrunner-1.9.1 is not installed. I tried to install that with apt-get but it was not available.
4. Now when I click on web browser I get the error "Failed to execute default Web Browser: Input/Output error".
5. What can I do without having to reinstall?

Aug 2, 2015I am running debian linux wheezy, and recently, all of a sudden, all videos in my iceweasel browser have been refusing to play videos of any kind at full volume. I am, however, able to download the video and play it at full volume on vlc player or sytem video player.Why iceweasel is acting this way?

Every once in a while, clicking the fullscreen icon on a Flash video will result in the video playback overlay appearing behind the actual browser requiring the browser to be minimised to see the video. Debian Installation :: Upgrade To Squeeze From Lenny / No Icons Or Toolbar
Jul 30, 2011I have a server that was happily running Lenny. Last reboot was over 100 days ago. So I decided to fix it and install Squeeze.the upgrade went well, booted into grub. (with the grub2 test menus).When I login using the console, I get the nice GUI login, and something looks like the graphics world is being setup. The screen goes to a pretty light blue background. But there are no icons, no toolbars, no windows.I could believe something in the Xconfig is broken, say it thinks I have a much larger screen, and all the icons are off the edges. But that is only a guess.

Nov 26, 2010Initially had windows xp in my system. Picked up on free partition (*it was not a primary partition*) and installed Debian from CD. The installation went fine. Towards end of installation the grub install ran detected windows xp presence and I continued with the install. End of install, prompted that the system would reboot.
However on reboot, I wasnt presented when boot option ( windows xp vs debian) but my windows xp directly got booted. How to get this boot option.
Ubuntu :: Locked Toolbar - New Position For The Toolbar That Sits At The Top Of The Screen
Mar 30, 2011I have been working for the last three months with Ubuntu 10 on a destop. Doing just fine and loving it. I decided to try a new position for the toolbar that sits at the top of the screen. I did a right click and moved it to the right side of the scree, didn't like the look of that. Right click on the bar and moved it to the left, didn't like that either, so moved it to the bottom. having done all that I thought I could put it back at the top but alas, I can not right click on the Toolbar.
It seems as though the two bars are fighting each other at the bottom of the screen.I would like to go back to the default position at the top of the screen. I do have a terminal window available to me on the desktop so if I could find out the command line to type in, I should be able to reset my tool bar. Being new I have no idea what this command would be.

Aug 2, 2011I have apache2, sql, php all installed fine on my debian installation. Initially, I installed phpmyadmin via apt-get install phpmyadmin. However, I wanted to upgrade my version of phpMyAdmin to the latest, so uninstalled and deleted it and used subversion to get a later version of phpMyAdmin. I decompressed the file in etc/ and renamed it to phpmyadmin. So now my working copy is located in /etc/phpmyadmin.
The issue: I cannot get phpmyadmin to show up in my web browser in http://MYIP/phpmyadmin. I used echo Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to get the line in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf, issue is, there IS no apache.conf in the phpmyadmin directory. If I recall correctly, installing phpmyadmin from the debian package has you choose a server before finishing the installation. I obviously did NOT get this prompt as I am installing from source.
Questions: How do I set the server? Is this why /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf is missing? Additionally: I have searched for hours for a solution and found nothing. I tried the phpmyadmin manual installation where you create a conf folder and set the permissions but in the end I could NOT access /phpmyadmin/scripts/setup.php
Debian Installation :: Minimal GUI Install With Web Browser
Nov 1, 2014I have recently acquired a micro-sized-PC (A Dell FX130) which comes with a VIA C7 processor, 1GB RAM and 1GB onboard flash. The only application I need is a web-browser, I will use the FX130 to access a (very limited) number of web applications and to download/print-html-to-PDF - putting files onto a USB thumb-drive. I want to encrypt the disk to guard against tampering, and to run a restrictive firewall.
When I try to install the i386 debian-7.7.0 image - I run into the snag that it won't let me use guided configuration for the 1GB flash drive... and - when I guess at a sensible partitioning... I find that I run out of space during the standard installs. I note, however, that a whole bunch of significant applications (which I don't need) are being installed.
I am sure I'm missing something - is there an easy way to do a "minimal" GUI install that would make it easy to fit (just) a web browser (Chrome - ideally) and dependencies onto a 1GB bootable flash drive in a 'Debian-standard' fashion?

May 26, 2011I only just upgraded to Squeeze and am now running Fluxbox 1.1.1. The toolbar is acting strangely, though, and I can't seem to find a solution online.
An example: I open Iceweasel, Thunar, and Icedove. If Iceweasel has focus, its window title will be on the left side of the toolbar. If I switch applications, and put that Thunar window in focus, the Thunar window title because the most-left item on the toolbar. I focus Icedove, Icedove's window title becomes the most left object on the toolbar and so on.

I can thus far see that extensions installed from the repositories can't be uninstalled from inside iceweasel. Is there any difference? Are they installed in different places? Are they always accessible to all users? Any difference at all?

Dec 6, 2015Until recently I had no trouble reading PDF files in Iceweasel. Acrobat Reader would open without prompting. Now, after a recent re-install of Jessie, that does not happen. The browser just freezes when I point it to a PDF file. Reader is installed and shows up among Iceweasel's add-ons.

Feb 25, 2016I just installed Debian on a new computer yesterday, it's more or less a fresh install. This morning I launched Iceweasel and it brought my computer to it's knees. I ran top, and found out that there was a process called "Web Content" using up 30 gigs of memory! Further experimentation shows that Iceweasel is fine until I open up a tab or two, and then it quickly begins consuming all my memory (I have 24 gigs) and swap space. I'm currently using Chrome, which is working fine, but I'd really prefer Iceweasel.

Aug 29, 2011A few days ago, I noticed that flash wasn't working. I don't use flash often and have Flashblock guarding the gates so not quite sure when that happened. In the process of getting it running again I noticed a lot of Iceweasel add-ons are available in the Debian repos. In fact, deleting Flashblock from Firefox and switching to the one from the repos may be what fixed the problem (or it could have been the latest Iceweasel update which I reinstalled).
Anyway, my question is . . . just how do add-ons available via Synaptic and those from Firefox differ? And is it preferable and advisable to use the ones in Synaptic? Since I imported my old profile from Firefox to Iceweasel, I have a lot of standard add-ons rather than the Debian version.
Debian :: AdBlock Plus Not Working With Iceweasel
Jul 7, 2015I have Inceweasel 31.8.0 installed on LXDE Debian Wheezy and I am trying to make AdBlock Plus work. The thing is that I get pop-ups from any site, Youtube ad videos, etc. all the time, just like I have nothing installed to prevent that.
I tried:
- Installing AdBlock from Iceweasel add-ons, with a suscription to easylist ;
- installing xul-ext-adblock-plus (also with the same suscription).
With each configuration or even with none of them, I get the same results as described above. Is there anything I can do ?
By the way, I don't get Youtube ad videos on Chromium with Adblock installed through the Chrome webstore.
Debian :: Iceweasel Crashes More Or Less Randomly
Feb 10, 2016I have Iceweasel 38.6.0 on Jessie 8.3, and it seems to crash more or less randomly. It just suddenly disappears, and when restarted, it gives that "embarrasing"- thing. The pages reopen fine and it may take a day between crashes, or about an hour.
Where should I look for the reason of the crashing? Is there a log file or something somewhere?
My machine is old StinkBad T400. I'm using Cinnamon.

Mar 11, 2010After installing 3.5.6 from backports, applets stopped working. I installed the java-6-sun package but it's still not making it. Searched google but haven't found anything but some bug fixes. Also saw something about ipv6, but not sure if that's related. That seemed to affect java programs. I use jedit and that is working fine. I downloaded the latest SDK from Sun and created a link from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins and /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins to /opt/SDK/jdk/jre/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so. Prior to the update to 3.5.6, the plugins were working and I could get the ..... stuff etc.

Jan 11, 2011I am running Squeeze (Gnome desktop) and I'm experiencing some problems with Iceweasel. My problem is that sometimes Iceweasel just hangs when I launch it. I can see the cursor blinking 2-3 times in the adress bar and then it just locks up. I have tried a few different versions of iceweasel, both from stable (squeeze though), experimental and now a package from http://mozilla.debian.net/packages/ with iceweasel 4 beta.
All of them behaves the same way. They work for a while and then suddenly locks up when launched. The only way to get going again is to kill the process and delete the .mozilla directory. It is possible to launch the --safe-mode though but nothing with this mode lets me change anything to get a normal session going.' Also, it doesn't matter if I have extensions installed or not, it still behaves the same way with zero of them installed. How would I go about to debug this? If I launch iceweasel from the command line I get no output but I'm sure there is a way to get some more info to work with.

Mar 4, 2011I've been using Iceweasel for 4-5 months now, since I installed Debian 6.0 testing.It worked fine and I had to use flashplugin-nonfree from the repositories in order to get flash working, nothing new here.In my last apt-get upgrade, something broke. Not sure if it is the flashplugin or Iceweasel.I tried changing flashplugins (trying the 32bit one, trying the new 64bit, trying another package I found) but every time I go on ..... and click on a video, Iceweasel crashes.The only output I got was "sesmentation fault".So I tried with firefox and Iceape and they worked fine.However the firefox downloaded was 32bit, so I downloaded the 3.6.12 source and compiled it (Forgot to mention i'm on amd64, but who isn't nowadays?).Flashplugin works fine with firefox 64bit, browser doesn't crash, but I keep getting:
