I do not have the machine personally but a friend of mine says her netbook with Linux detects the disk in the bios, but can not access it during the live usb. (but it worked previously). I have confirmed this with fdisk as fdisk detects the other devices as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, so it knows there is supposed to be a /dev/sda, but it is not there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI seem to have a major discrepancy between what df reports and what du reports. df tells me that I am using 20G, but I am only able to find 9.5G using du. What follows are the ls -l of root, a df of my system, and the du for every directory in root that is not a symbolic link, mnt, or proc. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to look for the remaining 10.5G that seems to have disappeared.

I have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.
I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?
Is the ctrl-alt-del > shutdown feature that used to live in 9.10 supposed to be missing in 10.04?

I was playing a bit with a 10.04 live cd and persistence on a small usb stick. I did that on a HP Probook 4510s with windows 7 installed. Testing the persistence, I changed the desktop background and tried to install a small package, about 14MB extra space was reported to be used. My usb stick is 512mb. Suddenly it says there's no more space. After that I rebooted with persistence and half way through loading it stopped saying there's no more space, again. I decided to call it quits and reboot it back to win 7, but doing that just left me with the message "missing operating system". I have no clue as to how it happened, since I did nothing with the hard drive.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a machine which i have to test with a live version of ubuntu 9.10. I used a usb pendrive for some time but it failed after rebooting a few times. Now i try to install a live version on a external HD of 160 GB.
I installed the ubuntu 9.10 with unetbootin on the external HD. When I boot from the HD I get the error: NTLDR is Missing. Is it possible to install of load the ubuntu 9.10 version on a external HD. I found some stuff about
- using another USB stick with the live version and install from that USB to the external HD.
- using the live cd to install. But I don't have a CD drive on the machine.
Is there another way to install Ubuntu without using a live disk? well what would be the website that you can use?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Jaunty with a BFG 6600 and a ViewSonic 2235wm Monitor. The monitor has both a DVI and VGA Analog port. I have been running DVI for the past two months with a clean install of Jaunty and prior with Feisty for two years. I just rebooted from hard disk and the screen was black. I connected the analog cable (now have both connected which is ok) and the analog works fine but I cannot switch to DVI using the buttons on the monitor. Here is what I did so far: I booted from the Live CD and both DVI and VGA work fine.
I could switch between using the monitor controls. When I boot from the hard disk only VGA works so I uninstalled the nvidia drivers, rebooted, reinstalled nidia and rebooted and have the same problem. No DVI. I do not think the problem is with the nvidia drivers since this happens before you fully boot up. The only thing I can think of is to reinstall the entire OS but then I will have to spend hours getting my configuration the way I like it. The fact that is works OK from Live CD tells me the DVI ports on both the monitor and video card work and the cables are ok.
I installed linux from a live disk. Now I went through all the nonsense to install and it tells me my user name and password is wrong. This crap is worse than windows. What gives? Dont tell me about well maybe you used the wrong anything proper case etc. I did that all several times to NO avail! Why I cant log on to my own computer?

When I called dell support, I have been told that my hard disk is dead. I have few important stuffs in my hard disk for which I don't have any back. So I tried using ubuntu live CD to back up my data as in the link below.[URL]..I'm using ubuntu 10.04 live CD(64 bit). When I go to my places after booting from the live CD I can't see any partition showing my hard disk. I can see "Computer". When I go in it I can only see "File System" and nothing related to my partitions in my HDD. What should I do now? Do I need to mount my hard disk or is my HDD completely dead?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Lucid Wubi system and I just got everything exactly the way I like it. My brother was having a hard time with Windows and I recommended Linux. Well being the inpatient person he is, he wasn't impressed with it "right out the box". But he's seen my setup and still wants to give it a shot. So I was curious if there was a way to create a Live CD from the way I have it already instead of downloading the "start-up" version from the site? I think they call them distros but I'm not for sure. This would be great I think to help introduce my brother and others to this awesome OS, and plus when I mess with the wrong things(which I have, and will again) I could re-install it from where I was instead of having to redo everything.

I have discovered that by using syslinux I can make the USB Hard-drive Bootable -- I learned this by playing around with Gentoo, however, I like Slackware. I was wondering if any-one could point me toward the direction of how to install Slackware and then utilize syslinux to make it bootable?
When I installed Lucid several months ago, I went ahead and let Ubuntu use the entire disk. Since then I have learned more about partitions and came to realize that I didn't have a separate /home partition, meaning that clean installs of new Ubuntu releases would wipe my data. I would like to carve my hard drive up from the LiveCD environment while preserving my current data and Lucid installation.

This was 'df -h /home' straight after a fresh install. It says it's 357G in size, but even though 272M is in use, it's telling me I have only 339G left available. Where did that extra 18G go?
My root partition seems to missing 1.6 GB of space. From "df -k" I get this output code...
I can't find any rootkits with rkhunter and chkrootkit, and fsck reports no errors.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here?
I use vuze. I added some torrents to it, but some time after i removed them using vuze's interface. I did these steps:
1. Right button click
2. Remove and
3. Remove both
After doing this, there was no change in my free disk space and some bizare things started to happen. Here is a screenshot about free disk space confusion that is happening. The partition is ext3. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this? How can i fix this? Does anyone experienced the same problem?

I started getting this warning that my Home partition disk space was running low, so I ran a disk space analyzer which only told me that I was using about 650 MB. Since I had 5 GB allocated to the home partition, I knew that something was not right. After manually going through all of the primary subdirectories on home, I found the culprit, namely an unexecuted game installation directory taking up about 4.5 GB. So I deleted the files, but then I didn't get my disk space back. I rebooted, no change. I ran this program called sfill, part of Secure Delete, which is supposed to wipe the directory 38 times and totally clean everything off. Still, no change. Any ideas how to reclaim my disk space?
