Debian Hardware :: Onboard Dell 0K095G PS/2 Will Not Work After Install

Feb 26, 2014

I bought a used Dell Precision T3500 after I had a positive experience with it at a previous job. Since my AMD motherboard died recently, I'm interested in using the Dell as my full time machine.

However, I cannot seem to get my PS/2 keyboard to work; this is crucial as I use a fully mechanical keyboard and need my N-key rollover that PS/2 provides.

The weird thing is that the PS/2 keyboard works perfectly during a text-based installation of Debian GNU/Linux. When I boot into a newly installed system if I press any key on my keyboard my Caps lock and scroll lock LEDs flash and no keystrokes are registered (?).

Debian :: Debian Net Install Would Work On A Dell Machine?

I was wondering if Debian Net install would work on a Dell machine. Because when I installed Windows on it I had actually go online with my other computer to find the damn dell drivers. So just wondering if Debian would detect the dell devices and actually have drivers for it.Yes, I realize it's probably a completely stupid question.

Debian :: Dell XPS L501 And Debian - Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/3/4/ Doesn't Work ?

Jan 22, 2011

I'm trying to install Debian on Dell XPS L501, and there are lots of problems...

1- Resolution is 800x600! I guess, I need to add that there is no xorg.conf file, and I couldn't create it by running `Xorg -configure`. It said the number of screens didn't match number of detected devices or something like that! I'd be really happy if this gets solved!

2- Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/3/4/... doesn't work! Sometimes Alt+Directional keys works. but most of the time it doesn't!

3- I can't get the loud speakers to work, and I couldn't compile Alsa from source... I'll try again, but does anyone know if there is a specific package I need to install to get them to work? (Realtek ID 665)

4- Keys are not working right... Function keys don't work... But the worse thing, is that if let's say Fn+F2 is supposed to disable wireless, F2 does!

I just built a computer and the onboard nic pluggin is loose and won't register or connect right... so I had to put another nic card in pci to connect to wired network for internet. Problem now is its delaying something fierce... i'm thinking if i can manage to uninstall or disable the onboard nic maybe things would work better... problem is i wouldn't know how to do it... I know hardware is connected via a document somewhere in the file system... if I were to delete the file would that disable the nic or would it just reinstall itself on the next boot?

Ubuntu :: Getting X To Work After Switching From Onboard Intel Video To A 5000 Series ATI Card?

Apr 25, 2010

I'm having trouble getting X to work after switching from onboard intel video to a 5000 series ATI card. Apparently I need to switch to a MESA or fglrx driver. I did a sudo apt-get install fglrx-driver and it installed but still no X. I'm currently using Karmic. I've tried to boot with a live CD which works fine and changed the xorg file manual but that was a mess.

When I start I get a checking battery state ... done and it stays there forever sometimes and sometimes I can login but without x. Typing startx gives me a long list that says check the xorg website. I've been looking around for a way to fix this and haven't been able to get it working.

Ubuntu Networking :: New 9.1 Install - Onboard Rhine II Not Working

Mar 14, 2010

This is my first attempt switching to Ubuntu from Windows, and I am having some trouble getting the on-board ethernet to work in Ubuntu 9.1. I have a MSI KM2M Combo-L VIA KM266 and VT8235 Chipset which uses the Rhine II chipset. I am trying to use the onboard ethernet, however it does not connect to the network after installing Ubuntu, although the driver appears to have been automatically installed. I also tried this with several other network cards (Intel, Dlink, Netgear) with various chipsets, but none seem to work.

Our network Netgear switch/router has DCHP enabled, and all of the Windows computers connect just fine. This is true even when we plug another computer into the ethernet cable serving the Ubuntu computer. When I manually configure the IP address, it shows the network connection as connected, but it is unable to ping and/or connect to the internet (except for localhost and the assigned IP address). I used 192.168.11 as the IP, 255.255.255.0 as the netmask, and 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. Below are several commands, that I've run to provide some additional information (using auto eth1).

Debian Hardware :: No Driver For Onboard Network Card - Asrock H97M ITx / AC

Sep 28, 2014

The ethernet adapter on my Asrock H97M ITx/AC motherboard isn't recognized during install. It's a Qualcomm Atheros AR8171 and none of the available options like alx or e1000e are working.

I originally tried to install openmediavault [URL] .... - which is based on debian - from an USB Stick and only came up tothe point where it tries to recognize the network card. It couldn't and promted me to choose one manually. So I checked the specs of my motherboard (a shiny new Asrock H97M ITx/AC with a Qualcomm Atheros AR8171) and after a short search I narrowed it down to alx or e1000e. Both of which only triggered a short flash of the interface and nothing more. I guess that's linux' way of sticking its tongue out at me.

For the last 2 days I therefore searched high and low and came across many possible solutions that either didn't work or included too much linux lingo that I couldn't understand it.

One solutions was to install a vanilla debian and then somehow install OMV over it, but debian itself couldn't recognize the network card either. So now I have a pretty minimal debian (CD1 install only) running but how to make it recognize and use the onboard network device.

Just out of curiosity, I plugged in an old hard drive with Win7 that hasn't been updated for at least 10 months. It only had a driver for AR8131 and warned me of using that, but it worked totally fine. Debian however doesn't even try to use an old driver but just flashes its interface at me.

Is there a way to make it work or is this board just not supported by debian and I have to resort to some other distro or a windows installation?

Debian Installation :: Onboard Graphics Card Setup - Full Hardware Acceleration Not Activated

Sep 5, 2015

I'm running hardware already considered legacy and I was made painfully aware that those drivers, for ATI cards, are only available from Jessie repositories; yet, somehow I was able to have my system configured to run not the stock drivers the system used for installation but, allegedly, proprietary drivers.

I did notice an overall improvement on how the system displays everything on the screen but after fumbling around the system trying to install a game I had a message warning that only software acceleration was activated and not full hardware acceleration, which was what I was aiming at.

After going through a lot of guides on the web I was able to:

a) discover the system is running MESA drivers (or so I have understood)
b) install headers for my system but somehow along the way I fumbled whatever I was doing and I probably now have a lot of loose ends in the system

Being Debian (and rock solid) the system is still running smoothly but I really want to clean up after myself and correct what I can and improve where is possible.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Won't Work On Dell?

Apr 18, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a flash drive along with Compiz for the eye catching effects. Everything works fine on my home IBM and (a rather newer) Dell. When I try to boot from the usb at school it works fine on our Acer computers, but on the Dells we have I get an error message after the Ubuntu splash screen. However, after the error message Ubuntu loads up, but Compiz doesn't work (A few examples are I can't do ctrl + alt + click for the cube, windows special effects like burn don't work, or anything else Compiz related).

Is this simply because of the Dell's hardware (like it doesn't have a strong enough graphics card?) or is it something I could change to make it work? (Ubuntu version, boot order, or something like that?) I know I am lacking a lot of details as to what type of Dell it is and the exact error message, but I will supply these in a day if needed.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Ceased To Work On Dell 2110?

I have installed Suse 11.3 on my Dell 2110, and everything went fine (wireless network included). After a couple of weeks, while I was trying to access a wireless network, the wireless module ceased to work. Now on knetworkmanager the option to enable wireless network is grey and cannot be selected. Following some indications I found in this forum for a similar issue, I uninstalled the broadcom drivers and re-install them again, with a cold start between the two phases as suggested, without success. After that, the option on knetworkmanager is still grey, and from yast the wireless module appears as "not configured". If I switch to ifup and configure it, the situation does not change.

This is my current configuration:
Suse 11.3, kernel 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop, 64 bit version.
KDE 4.4.4 "release 3"

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Dell Vostro 420 Sound Does Not Work

Jun 11, 2009

setting up CentOS 5.3 (x86_64) on a Dell Vostro 420 Workstation, I came across a few problems/questions:

1. I am using software RAID1 (including sda and sdb), following the tutorial on CentOS Wiki. However, in my case, GRUB wants to install on /dev/md0 (the RAID device mounted as /boot) instead of /dev/sda (which would be the MBR, as usual). This is confusing, since installing to a partition is completely different from installing to the MBR. I suspect it *does* write to the MBR since the system does boot afterwards and the MBR was empty before. So maybe /dev/md0 is just a bit imprecise If yes, is the MBR still written to sda only, so that it is necessary to setup grub on sdb separately, as indicated in the documentation?

2. Sound does not work. The sound controller (ICH10 family) seems to be recognized, but the sound test behaves strangely: Normally, you have the three test sounds, and only after that a window will appear asking for confirmation. On my machine, the confirmation window appears immediately (!) so it seems the system is not even trying to play the sounds. Very strange...

3. I am seeing this damned "BIOS Bug: MCFG area at f0000000 is not E820-reserved" message. (May or may not be related to issue #2) It seems many people have this problem, but there is no real solution. In few cases, a BIOS update did the trick, but I think most hardware manufacturers are not even considering this a bug as long as there are no problems in Windows. It does seem to depend on the distribution, however, so newer kernels obviously have learned to handle the situation. Is this being considered by the upstream provider? Switching to Fedora is not really an option here

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Get Dell Vostro 1520 WLAN To Work

Mar 31, 2010

I just installed 9.10 on a brand new Dell Vostro 1520. The WLAN card does NOT work out of the box.

Here is what you have to do.
After install and rebooting insert the live CD
Go to software sources (system > software sources)and check the "officially supported restricted copyright" box
You are then asked to update the available software list, do so.
You will receive an error message since you are not (yet) connected to the internet and all the other repositories are not available.

Now you should be notified that restricted drivers are available, if not you can go to system > hardware. Anyway, now you should be able to activate the Broadcom STA driver. After rebooting you can connect to available wireless networks.

Alternative (in case you are not asked, which happened to me on another Vostro system) system>administration>syaptic package manager
Search for broadcom
Mark b43-fwcutter and bcmwl-kernel-sources for installation
Reboot (who said there is no rebooting required in linux)
The adapter should be up and running ...
